"I believe there's no place for formally introducing conventional algorithms to children in the first five years of school." Doug Clarke's 2005 article makes a compelling case for holding off on algorithms. '

Enjoying this paper. I love the question the authors asked Ss: Which teacher would you give an award to and why? Potentially brilliant insight into what students value from teachers!

Played a modified version with my kid who is in foundation where the picture cards are worth zero (instead of 10) and the target number is 10 (instead of 16). Worked v/well. Great to have a game you can revisit in multiple year levels by tweaking rules very slightly

Ok, we've had a crack! We think the lighthouse would have to be 108,500km high (1/4 way to moon) for the light to travel the 40,075km earth circumference. However when modelling, it didn't look like this would actually work! We think the light could only go 1/4 way maybe?

Doing a silly lesson today: In "A Whole New World," Aladdin and Jasmine pass the Pyramids of Giza at 1:40. 18 seconds later, they are seen in Athens. How many mph was the carpet traveling? How does this compare to the speed of the fastest jet?

It makes me wonder whether ‘buy-in’ from teachers, leaders etc is more important than the substance of any intervention. Perhaps another interesting moderator to consider. It helps explain why just about everything works locally whilst almost nothing is scaleable.

Everything works in educational research until you tighten the methodology so much nothing works. Why do large scale RCTs in EdRes tell us so little? Does it have implications for what the rest of us think we know?

Lots of possible investigations for Ss in this video. If it costs $250,000 to send a gallon (3.8L) of water to the ISS and $10,000 to send an apple, how much to send your favourite food? What about your favourite drink?

Year 1 realising that addition is commutative became known as a ‘swapsy trick’ in my class a few years ago. And I found that reminding children of ‘Fiona’s swapsy trick’ had the effect of turning ‘Fiona’ into an ‘expert’ and also made the rule far more memorable for the class.
