So, I had an abortion the other day. Among other things, my experience made me realize just how supremely fucked up these fetal heartbeat bills really are.

P.S. I feel a bit nervous and exposed tweeting about my abortion (which just shows how much I've internalized the hush-hush culture around it). But abortion is NORMAL. And restrictive laws like these ignore women's realities so thoroughly. #shoutyourabortion
I live in abortion-friendly NYC, can afford it, and made my decision literally 1 day after my missed period. If I had to wait that long for an abortion, how the fuck are women supposed to plan for theirs under heartbeat laws???
These bills are cruel, disingenuous, evil mindfucks and are designed to send an ominous message, even if they do get struck down by federal judges. Iowa's did, but Florida and Ohio are next. The goal is the Supreme Court.
we don’t talk enough about how it doesn’t fucking matter what random ppl think about abortion cutoffs, bc most ppl are not doctors and have no idea how it works or why someone would seek a 20-week abortion! it’s deeply weird to me to poll voters about medical procedures
Finally I went in for my abortion at almost 6.5 weeks pregnant. A heartbeat can often be detected at 6 weeks. Under one of these laws, it could have been too late.
I meticulously chart my cycles, so I knew I was pregnant right away. At 4.5 weeks I went to my gyno and was told it was TOO early for an abortion—they couldn't yet see anything on the ultrasound.
I was told to come back in a week. At 5.5 weeks pregnant, I was able to be scheduled for their first available procedure...5 days away.
why did i choose a profession where you just have homework and deadline dread forever

like, a lot of people feel comfy with first trimester abortions but not second trimester? ok but they have zero idea what they’re talking about!

been thinking abt this passage by my mom, ellen willis, on a 1969 abortion speakout. poverty stories are trump-era class consciousness, but women's sexual autobiographies are still deemed TMI, even by some progressives, 50 goddamn years later

About 1 out of 50 pregnancies are ectopic - outside the uterus. If you have a D&C or take the abortion pill w/o verifying an intrauterine pregnancy and it IS an ectopic, you could assume you are not pregnant and ignore the signs of a ruptured ectopic, which is life threatening.

Many poor millennials remain in low-wage non-unionized jobs and don't have BAs (but might still have debt from a few semesters of college). This hasn't changed now that the economy has "recovered." It hasn't changed for decades.

this week's column is all about first-time sex: if you should wait for luuuv, if it hurts, if "virginity" even exists (no)
for the last time: “6 weeks pregnant” means 4 weeks after conception. 2 weeks after a missed period. any heartbeat bill reporting that doesn’t clarify is irresponsible and inaccurate.

But there's also a pretty-clearly-integrated conservative story of what's happening here, which is that hook-up culture itself is part of what leads to less sex, because it leads to fewer monogamous relationships. Maximal liberation = less actual intercourse.
