Ilhan Omar's questioning of Elliot Abrams was uncomfortable in the right kind of way - it forced a brief moment of accountability for horrific crimes and brought the darker history of U.S. intervention in Latin America into the current debate.

Although of course through some perverse twist of Cold War logic, the Reagan administration ended up backing the Khmer Rouge so attempting satire about US foreign policy can feel futile at times.

Apparently Pol Pot was a nice guy if you know him, with a distinctive smile and a sweet temper.

Look the man may have contributed to the deaths of a few thousand innocent people but he was a heck of a good colleague to me, a fellow important person, on a personal level, which is absolutely the important metric by which to evaluate a policymaker.

Man, so weird. Why would the executive branch be so aggressively uninterested in securing elections against foreign interference? It’s a real puzzler.

Next stop Caracas and please do not ask along the way whether the attempted US-backed coup in 2002 contributed in any way to the downward spiral of Venezuelan institutions.

tl;dr what all his friends are saying is true — the most horrifying things Elliott Abrams has done happened a long time ago and since then he has mostly stuck to broad consensus banal bad stuff that they all did too

Their badness is actually a kind of perpetual motion machine as you meet a lot of people with sensible views on these issues working in the politics & policy space but they almost all learn quickly to pick another issue to work on if you want to make any headway.

I’m sure there is a more inbred, morally compromised, and intellectually bankrupt group of people than the 21st Century US national security community to be found somewhere in the history of democratic politics but examples escape me this evening.

All credit to Rep. Omar but also some of the youngsters on here don’t seem to realize that Democrats have been yelling at Elliott Abrams in committee hearings for decades.

He got pardoned as part of a large-scale coverup of Iran Contra that established the precedent of impunity that Trump is relying on to get away with his crimes but okay.

Cheaping out on the national legislature is the world’s dumbest form of populism and makes everything bad about the political system that much worse.

Members should get free housing in DC., be well-staffed so they can be knowledgeable on policy, senior staffers should be well-paid so the general understanding is those are jobs for career staffers not way-stations to a lobbying gig, etc

The US massively underinvests in congressional staff and facilities, relying instead on “free” outside expertise from lobbyists and compensating staffers with the option to cash out on K Street.
