    Universities often think success comes from hiring big names. Wrong. Success comes from supporting existing staff. To cite the conclusion to a 2004 paper in Harvard Business Review: "the first step in winning the war for talent is not to hire stars but to grow them"

    Something for scientists to think about: -Hire people who are humane to their colleagues and trainees -Don't put people in leadership positions who are abusive -Reward people who are supportive mentors -Treat science as a team sport and reward great teams and team players

    When you walk out of a classroom at the end of a module and the students are energised, enthusiastic and aiming to change the world I think it is safe to say my teaching goal was achieved through them 😃

    Week 12 equals 17 hours of lectures spread across four modules. But it’s an exhilarating teaching week for me as it’s the culmination of semester learning processes and the students are focused and heading for their goals. Lol I’ll have no voice by Friday evening though!

    We talk about resilience in pursuing a career in academia but I don’t think we steel ourselves for disappointment when we are often so passionate about what we do. When we put our hearts, souls, aspirations and optimism into our work how can we not take rejection personally? 🤔
