    It's hip to be apathetic about changes in foreign policy, particularly when it seems unsavory deals have been tolerated forever & are immutable. But having covered DC debate over Yemenfor 3 years--from way back when made it a big issue Oct 2015--I am wowed today.

    Like every other part of this, what's next will take time. Congress is just beginning to exercise power like this & of the striking margin Yemen war critics got today, many will ultimately peel off in subsequent votes. But a particular orthodoxy has been definitively shattered.

    The actions of Saudi&UAE have been noticed in DC. Advocacy by a small group of deeply committed lawmakers+advocates has made a difference. And even moonshot goals, like getting Lindsey Graham to vote to open up debate on a policy pitched as anti-Iran, have been achieved.

    Every single Democrat (49) + 14 Republicans ended up voting to move this forward. HUGE change from 55-44 just 6 months ago.

    WE ARE AT 51. Heitkamp is a YES. The Senate Yemen bill will clear its first hurdle--the first time ever a majority in either chamber will endorse a piece of legislation taking aim at the US policy of support for the Saudi-UAE coalition.

    Lot of folks talking about vetoes by Trump. This is not going anywhere near his desk, at least for a long time. This is the first of what will be at least a couple more votes on the bill in the Senate. The House is unlikely to take it up this session. Point much more symbolic.

    Now 7 votes flipped by advocacy from lawmakers, staff & relentless folks like (and of course the failure by the Trump admin, the Saudis & the UAE to sell a convincing case for continuing current US policy+self-inflicted Saudi wounds like the Khashoggi murder.)

    Big. And just announced on the Senate floor that he's a yes too. Gets to 48 without any of the uncertain Rs Bernie/Murphy/Lee had last time. So 3 to watch--and those votes could come from a number of Dems, notably Jones, Heitkamp, Donnelly or Nelson.

    Well, just announced in our committee meeting that he will vote later today to move forward our resolution ending US participation in the Yemen war. Getting closer to 51 votes.

    (For all seeking my official position on & today’s Capitol Hill fight on Saudi Arabia, it’s that I haven’t had the Senate chicken tenders in far too long.)

    An angry calls it "outrageous" & "coverup" that CIA Director Gina Haspel wasn't sent to brief the Senate on the murder of Jamal Khashoggi and the role of the Saudi Crown Prince. "Tells me volumes about what's really going on here," he said after Senate briefing.
