    4) In other words, he saw his book as a way to overcome the distance between the reader and the author of a printed book. Something of the author's soul is in the book (this 200 years before wrote about Tom Riddle's diary).

    3) There were earlier rabbinics bibiolgraphies, but they're what you would expect. Uniform and laconic. Shem Ha-Gedolim includes stories about books and authors. He saw it as being a handbook for yeshiva students to get to know the authors of the works they use.

    2) What the short-story writer got, and what the writer of the review didn't get (which the writer of the thread, I know, gets), is that Shem Ha-Gedolim is not a "bibliography" per se. It's true that he lists all the books and authors, that's not what's motivating him.

    Comments on a thread on a review of a book and a story about a library. Got all that? 1) I had no idea that part of the Hid"a's library is at Columbia. That's freaking awesome.

    So many things to say here. Excuse me while I pontificate I bit. The history of the HIDA's collection, and the Almanzi collection, are well known, and I wish that little corrections could have been included here.

    This has been the case for a long time. It's only on Rosh Hodesh that there's an issue because everyone knows it's coming. But, in all honesty, I'm not sure if the various sides can survive without friction.
