Facing East: Navigating Your Aliyah Journey

Every aliyah journey begins with finding some clarity about your destination, your goals, your why, and how you’re going to make it happen. Use this compass model to find your true north.

North: Setting Your Destination

Where are you headed? What’s your goal?

Community Connection:

Which type of community aligns with your values and lifestyle? Does an urban center, religious neighborhood, costal city, or rural yishuv speak to your soul?

Family Integration:

How do you envision your children’s education and social integration looking and working? What support systems will you need?

Professional Path:

What will your work life look like? Will you be continuing your current career, exploring new horizons, or pursuing further education?

Living Arrangement:

What type of home meets your needs? Apartment? Villa? Modern studio?

Having a clear vision doesn’t mean every detail has to be ironed out. But knowing your general direction will help you navigate decisions with confidence.

West: Assessing Your Resources

What tools do you possess to help you achieve your goal and reach your destination?

Financial Readiness:

What savings, income sources, and financial planning have you put in place for your aliyah journey?

Professional Skills:

Which of your skills are transferable? What can you offer that’s in demand in the Israeli market?

Language Ability:

What’s your current level of Hebrew? What resources do you have to improve it? Do you even need to improve it based on where you’re going and what you’re planning to do?

Support Network:

Which friends, family members, organizations, and businesses can provide support before, during, and after your move?

Adaptability:

How have you demonstrated flexibility and resilience in the past?

Having a clear vision doesn’t mean every detail has to be ironed out. But knowing your general direction will help you navigate decisions with confidence.

East: Understanding Your Why

Why ARE you doing this? Let your why be your anchor.

Spiritual Connection:

Is your aliyah connected to a desire to deepen your relationship with Judaism and the hopes and prayers of our ancestors going back through history?

National Identity:

Do you feel called to participate in the ongoing story of the Jewish homeland and in helping to build Israel?

Family Legacy:

Are you fulfilling a family dream or building a new legacy for future generations by moving here?

Quality of Life:

Are you seeking the unique lifestyle that living in Israel offers, with its warmth, directness, family feel, and sense of belonging?

Understanding & knowing your “why” provides emotional fuel for the journey. It also helps others support you!

South: Setting Your Destination

Where are you headed? What’s your goal?

Practical Concerns:

Housing, cost of living, employment uncertainty, bureaucracy, or health care?

Family Considerations:

Aging parents left behind, children’s adjustment, spouse’s career transition?

Cultural Adjustment:

Different social norms, work culture, language barriers?

Emotional Attachments:

Difficulty leaving behind friends, family, and familiar surroundings?

Naming your challenges allows you to develop specific strategies to address them.

The Getter Group Experience

“Using The Getter Group’s services has probably been one of the best decisions we have made. Not only did they help us find our dream property …, but they have held our hand … all the way, checking contracts, explaining to us everything we need to know and understand, even finding us a very good lawyer. … We wouldn’t even dream about buying a property in Israel without their help. We highly recommend them.“

Ed and Susan Saleh

I …  highly recommend using The Getter Group…. They go above and beyond what any other agents do, and they provide an excellent service. After closing on the deal and shaking hands, Mr. Getter … felt like someone who was helping his friends actualize their dream of owning a small piece of Eretz Yisrael.

The Getter Group gave us the confidence right away and got us a significant discount. From the beginning, we knew how much they could help. … We definitely recommend — being olim chadashim not understanding the culture, not having the Hebrew — not trying to do this alone. Being nowhere near this industry, starting with zero knowledge, find someone to help!

FAQ

There are special discounts on purchase tax and certain mortgage benefits. There are also VAT and customs duties exemptions when importing household goods.

It is totally different. Hiring a lawyer is not optional in Israel, as it is in some US states. Contracts are more heavily negotiated. Down payments are generally higher and mortgages are usually structured differently. Even looking for a home is totally different. Timing, financing, taxes — all of these are different. Even those experienced with purchasing property in their home countries will be approaching this as beginners.

The timeline depends on a number of factors, including whether it’s new construction or a secondhand property. It can take anywhere from a couple months to a few years.

If you have the money to buy, it is preferable at the very least to buy something, even if it’s not in your ideal location, and then to rent where you want to live. This way, you’ve established yourself in the property market — and given that Israel’s real estate market has typically shown long-term appreciation, you’ve made an investment that will continue to grow. You will also be able to take advantage of purchase benefits for olim. The major benefit of renting is not needing the capital required for buying, but it’s ideal to buy and begin building equity in Israel.
