With increasingly more multi-cultural and multi-ethnic societies due to new migration routes, migrant and refugee integration can be a challenge both for host communities as well as for migrant and refugees themselves. Lack of proper integration can lead to the violation of basic human rights as well as social, political and cultural rights. Building a deep understanding of the main issues at stake is vital to developing the technical capacities to address this issue effectively so that all parties of the equation can benefit from migration.

Course outline
We live in an age of migration. The world has been witnessing the biggest human displacement since the World War II. While millions of people in need of international protection are on the move, states are developing strategies to keep their borders closed to unwanted migration in favour of their labour market needs and welfare provisions. On the other hand, the claims of transnational migrants are on the rise on a global scale but we still see the restrictions on migrants and asylum seekers’ rights both at the national and the international level.
Whether working (or willing to work) in natural or human made crisis, protection, child protection, and gender-based violence (GBV) specialists need to possess a unique set of skills and competencies to navigate the complexities and demands of designing, implementing, and evaluating a GBV-focused intervention in humanitarian action.
Addressing gender-based violence (GBV) has gained increasing prominence in the work of human rights, humanitarian and development organisations internationally. GBV is now recognised as a violation of basic human rights with detrimental impacts on the health and social status of survivors of GBV, as well as on society as a whole. International humanitarian and development agencies are increasingly engaging on this issue both through specific programmes that address GBV, as well as through mainstreaming GBV within wider sectoral approaches.
