RDF, the Semantic Web and the Practice of Relationships


I love that explanation by +Kingsley Idehen whom I relentlessly ask about all things Semantic Web and its "implementation". Today, I got this beautiful answer that I believe enriches our understanding of how we can build the Web of People.

#RDF and the notion of a #SemanticWeb are victims of mass confusion.

hashtag#RDF is just an abstract language for hashtag#DataDefinition i.e., representing entity relationship types using subject->predicate->object structured sentences. It is both notation and content serialization format agnostic. Unfortunately, mistakes made circa., 1998 re. its inadvertent co-mingling with hashtag#XML persist till this very day.

The notion of a hashtag#SemanticWeb is simply about an entity relationship graph (network) constructed from hyperlinks (specifically, #HTTP URIs), but that too is somewhat blurred by confusion about the nature of an HTTP URI regarding what it actually identifies.

IT departments are full of practitioners well versed in entity relationships that model the real-world. Confusion arises as a consequence of the items above and the dominance of "programmer voice" over the voices of "subject matter experts" and "enterprise architects" .

Ultimately, the hashtag#SemanticWeb will simply emulate the hashtag#Web i.e., it just becomes recognized for what it is by stealth.

Remember, hashtag#Web wasn't generally understood en route to explosion.
