Standing tall
Polar bear (Ursus maritimus)

This cub is standing on its legs to get a better view of the surroundings and hoping to see and understand what is the focus of the mother just in front of it.
Living much of its life on the sea ice which provides no high vantage points, this is the best way to get up high to see ahead.
On land it is a different matter as there it can simply climb to higher ground, but its food source is on the sea ice, which is disappearing fast. In the coming decades the likely outcome is a fraction of current sea ice.
The recent deep freeze of Europe was countered with an equal opposite in the Arctic with summer temperatures – in particular north of Greenland and the Polar Sea - with temperatures 30-40C above normal. Which means the North Pole has seen above freezing temperatures midwinter. This disrupts the rebuilding of the sea ice making it even more susceptible to excessive melting in the coming summer. In fact the warmest place in Norway lately has been Longyearbyen Svalbard, and is continuing an unbroken trend of 87 months of temperatures above normal.
The polar bears have a challenging time ahead and it is uncertain how they will keep up with the rapid change.
For now this cub is lucky as its mother seems to be both a great hunter, but perhaps also able to make the right choices that lead to the summer on the sea ice opposed to being stranded on land, which more and more polar bears experience now.

This is one of several amazing moments this female and her cub shared with us, and here they are walking straight towards the boat I'm on to check it out, as their seal carcass was completely cleaned out and thus the hunt for new opportunities went up to the number one priority.
They evoke so many emotions in humans, and I am no exception, as I simply cannot help myself and say "aaaww" when I look at the cub in the image. But during the encounter my heart was filled with awe, amazement, love and admiration, as the cub and her mother are such incredible animals. The cub had a unique way of keeping the lower lip hanging, or drooping, and it just adds to the cuteness that is a cub. And that we humans simply love.
Cuteness aside, this cub has had an amazingly good start in life, as the mother has made it off Svalbard and onto the sea ice, where the food is during the summer months. Chances are that this cub one day is a fully grown specimen, capable of killing a human with just one hit of either of its paws!
