Red top

I'm not sure what kind of mushroom this is... but I found it in the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge off of Freeland Rd. I ran out of waterfalls to shoot because the streams are too full of water... so went searching for other subjects. This one did very nicely... and I'm glad I kept my macro lens in my bag on this adventure.

Happy "almost the weekend" to all :)

Cold Spring Rain

So I have to confess that the "rain" is really a texture I added in post processing. However, it was wet and freezing rain and drizzly the day I took this photo as can be seen by the water drops on the crocus blossoms. I've been able to get out a little more with my camera recently which has been fun. I'm still way behind in processing and posting photos though. Hope everyone is a little less busy and able to stop and enjoy the God's beautiful creation.

Cone Flower Glow

My wife and I were visiting some friends this weekend and the light Saturday evening was beautiful. I may have overdone it a bit with the texture:)

Comments/Suggestions welcome!

A cake with strawberry sauce?

Bleeding tooth fungus (Hydnellum peckii)

Svartskog, Norway

The diversity and number of mushrooms growing in the forest now is more than I can remember in decades. It is absolutely incredible!

I usually find the conspicuous species like the Fly agaric individually and far between, and some autumns they have been hard to find. Now they are growing in huge clusters and with countless clusters all over the forest here.

The foliage of the trees are still just beginning to change to reds and yellows, but on the forest floor the mushrooms provide an incredible color palette that I hope to capture in the coming weeks.

I have found such strange and beautiful species, like this one seemingly bleeding rubies!

This is in fact the beginning of the decomposing cycle and some species start off my seemingly sweating liquid, but this is the only species I’ve seen with such brilliant color!

It looks deliciously strawberry-like, but all of this mushroom is most likely very unhealthy, possibly toxic to us.

Fire and ice

Spreading cotoneaster (Cotoneaster divaricatus)

Svartskog, Norway

Frost has been on hold for several weeks, but lately the nights have been clear and without any wind and thus winter is creeping ever closer as the nights keep getting colder for longer.
In a post a couple of days ago I was sharing my hope to encounter beautifully frosted plants, and today I was not disappointed.

Although frost is truly wonderful wherever it emerges it is particularly striking when forming of plants that are still holding the last iotas of summer in the form of foliage and even flowers that the frost has trapped in a beautiful cold frame.

For decades this plant species has been promoted by garden centers and gardeners alike as they are such reliable sources of incredible autumn colors and when all the foliage is gone they still stand out as they carry large numbers of red berries. Unfortunately that is one of several examples of misguided introductions of foreign species that is now black-listed in Norway and wherever it has been introduced as it is spreading uncontrollably and in suppressing the local and endemic species. The berries are perfectly sized for birds of all sizes which has ensured its incredible distribution. On my property it is absolutely everywhere, but only in autumn can you truly see how it is growing everywhere, as it outshines all other species that have already lost their foliage.
