Google Assistant lets you choose preferred method of transportation for better directions and commute times

Google Assistant is smart enough to know a lot of things about you, but it doesn’t know everything. Sometimes it needs a little help to be the best possible virtual assistant it can be. For instance when navigating, Assistant can better serve you information about your commute times but first it needs to know how you get around.

Finding directions is a popular use for Google Assistant, but what if you aren't driving? Or, what if you only drive sometimes, but your commute involves walking or biking? Google Assistant allows users to set their preferred method of travel. With a preference(Menu button > Settings > Preferences) set, Google Assistant will default to this method when travel times are searched for. Google Assistant can accommodate this situation with "Getting around."

With the "Getting around" options, you can tell Assistant how you commute to work and how you get around generally. The choices include walking, public transit, biking, and driving. You can have different settings for your commute and general directions. Google asks how you get to work, and how you generally get around to other places. So if you walk to work, but usually drive a car to get to other places, then Google Assistant will know which travel method to select.

After setting that, you can ask for directions via Assistant and it will provide your preferred type.
