WARNING: The following review contains spoilers
Now we have the movie that provided the caption I use for my movie review collection. Logan, the final X-Men film featuring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
R-rating is a good choice. Small-scale is a good choice. THIS is the real Wolverine, the real Logan, and the best X-Men movie (not about the X-Men) that exists. Logan is the Dark Knight of this decade's superhero movies. Very rarely are filmmakers able to create a superhero film that can pull off a serious ambiance throughout the story. Logan does just that, and more.
There are four feature films in existence that have made me cry. Frozen, Inside Out, HTTYD: The Hidden World, and Logan. I don't even consider myself a fan of the X-Men series, mostly because I haven't seen all the movies and I only really care for a couple of them, but wow. You don't even have to like X-Men (or have watched any previous movies) to absorb something valuable from this one. There's humor through all that grit, there's spectacular acting, REAL stakes and a REAL threat, and a story that isn't the typical save-the-world-from-bad-dude nonsense.
One thing that's annoying in modern superhero flicks is the lack of blood. In Black Panther, Killmonger slits the throat of one Dora Milaje fighter, right there in front of the camera, and not a DROP of blood appears anywhere. Her throat remains unscathed as she drops dead. What the shit? And in other Wolverine appearances, when he slices people's bodies, it looks like he's slicing a pillowcase. There are other MCU movies that do it better, with blood actually appearing when heroes are shot, stabbed, or beaten. And in Logan, it's the most realistic it'll ever get. I LOVE that shit. Only Logan and Deadpool have shown us what would really happen in these fights between heroes and villains. Because in the real world, there's pain. There's injury. In the real world, people aren't made of stuffing, they're big sacks of blood waiting to be popped. Also in the real world, people curse - a LOT. Especially someone as battered, weary, and broken as Logan. So the naughty profanity satisfies me greatly.
Like I said before - so emotional. So well-acted. Especially in the scenes that hurt. I can't imagine pulling off what Hugh Jackman did during Charles's burial. Christ alive, that was an impressive performance. There are real feelings in these characters faces. It physically hurts to watch this movie.
Can't say much more. Would if I could. I'll just end with the fact that the final moments of the movie seal the deal. It's the most satisfying, deeply moving moment in a superhero movie I've seen - like, ever. When Laura turns back to Logan's grave and adjusts the wooden cross so it's an "X" instead. The best send-off to any character happened right there in the theater. Nobody could have concluded this movie better.
Now I gotta give Logan an A grade. Probably in my top 5 favorite superhero movies of all time. I'm glad to own it.
"This is what life looks like. A home. People who love each other. A safe place. You should take a moment and feel it."
