#Astrophysics #TheoreticalPhysics #YearInScience: Scientists led by Yan-Fei Jiang at the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) built a computer model that helps to explains the weird, wild behavior of rare, so-called luminous blue variable stars.

The team's 3-D model provided key insights that former 1-D models couldn't offer. One such key insight is how a light-blocking effect of the element helium in part determines the temperature of the stars during one of their characteristically bright outbursts.

Researchers are keen to study luminous blue variable stars to gain a deeper understanding of the physics behind the explosive death of massive stars as a kind of supernova.

New Theory: The Universe is a Bubble, Inflated by Dark Energy

It's 2:20 AM, January 1st, 2018+1, I'm re-reading now "The Ego and Its Own"
by Max Stirner in my den in Marseille, France. I will post some interesting passages from it about Christianity and Religion on my Philosophy and Religion page later on.
However, I'm still thinking about the universe, space-time, dark energy, and cosmology related topics. Check out my last post:

The Missing Universe: CERN Has Started Searching for “Dark Photons” - We, Particle & Theoretical Physics community, Have Been Skeptical and Careful but in The Same Time Studying and Taking Seriously The Possibility of A "Fifth Fundamental Force" of Nature For Two Years

In brief:

Dark matter seems to outweigh visible matter roughly six to one, making up about 27% of the universe.

Physicists from CERN now believe there's a fifth universal force that rules the behavior of dark matter, and is transmitted by a particle called the dark photon.

The brilliant and enigmatic Paul Dirac, a pioneer of quantum mechanics, was born 114 years ago today. Dirac studied engineering at Bristol University and then, thanks to scholarships, mathematics and physics at Cambridge University. For his PhD thesis, he developed a form of Erwin Schrodinger's wave equation that is consistent with Albert Einstein's special relativity. Among the equation's implications is the existence of antimatter, which was identified in 1932 by Carl Anderson soon after Dirac's prediction. Dirac's quantization of the electromagnetic field as a collection of harmonic oscillators amid particles that can be created and annihilated was the first step toward quantum electrodynamics and, more generally, toward quantum field theories. In an essay published two years before he died in 1984, Dirac recounted his approach to theoretical physics: "A good deal of my research work in physics has consisted in not setting out to solve some particular problems, but simply examining mathematical quantities of a kind that physicists use and trying to get them together in an interesting way regardless of any application that the work may have. It is simply a search for pretty mathematics. It may turn out later that the work does have an application. Then one has had good luck."

Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Could Detect Extra Dimensions

A recent paper published in Physics Letters B has raised the prospect that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) could mark a discovery that would put its earlier achievements with the #HiggsBoson in the shade. The authors of the recent published paper propose it could spot mini black holes. Such a discovery would be a matter of massive importance on its own, but might be a sign of even more significant things. Few notions from theoretical physics capture the public imagination as much as the “many-worlds theory,” which suggests an infinite number of universes that vary from our own in ways large and small. The notion has delivered great fodder for science fiction novelists and comedians. Nevertheless, according to Professor Mir Faizal from the University of Waterloo, "Normally, when people think of the multiverse, they think of the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, where every possibility is actualized," he told Phys.org. "This cannot be tested and so it is philosophy and not science." Nonetheless, Faizal reflects the test for a different type of parallel universes nearly within our reach. Faizal says “What we mean is real universes in extra dimensions. As gravity can flow out of our universe into the extra dimensions, such a model can be tested by the detection of mini black holes at the LHC.”

Newsflash: I've Studied the Paper and It Seems That The Results Are Confirmed: The Biggest Technological Breakthrough and The Greatest News in Physics in 2016-2017: After 80 years Of Waiting for The Theoretical Prediction Called "The Wigner-Huntington Transition to Solid Metallic Hydrogen", We Have Now "Solid Metallic Hydrogen", which means: "The Super Perfect Conductor of Electricity".

Producing metallic hydrogen has been a great challenge to condensed matter physics. Metallic hydrogen may be a room temperature superconductor and metastable when the pressure is released and could have an important impact on energy and rocketry. We have studied solid molecular hydrogen under pressure at low temperatures. At a pressure of 495 GPa hydrogen becomes metallic with reflectivity as high as 0.91. We fit the reflectance using a Drude free electron model to determine the plasma frequency of 32.5 ± 2.1 eV at T = 5.5 K, with a corresponding electron carrier density of 7.7 ± 1.1 × 10^23 particles/cm3, consistent with theoretical estimates of the atomic density. The properties are those of an atomic metal. We have produced the Wigner-Huntington dissociative transition to atomic metallic hydrogen in the laboratory
