On China, has Canada lost its sense of justice?
#Huawei, with many partners around the world, has a great reputation globally. It has publicly stated, on many occasions, that its global operations are in strict compliance with local laws and regulations. Nevertheless, members of the #FiveEyes countries - the United States, #Britain, #Australia, #NewZealand and Canada - have accused Huawei of threatening their #nationalsecurity while providing no evidence. With such speculation, they have sown fear and misled people.
If Huawei’s #telecomequipment poses a security risk, so do the devices produced by Western telecom equipment manufacturers, since they use the same science and technology. To find out who poses the biggest threat to the security of other countries, please refer to the #UnitedStates' #PRISMprogram. Those who criticize China’s Huawei should exam themselves in the mirror. The Canadian side detained Ms. #MengWanzhou in an unreasonable way given she has not received any charges according to #Canadia's laws, which is clearly not judicial independence but a miscarriage of justice.

The #Trumpadministration's global campaign against telecom giant #Huawei is pitting Europe against itself over #China. Up until now, no intelligence service has published clear evidence that Huawei inserted 'backdoors' for Chinese authorities to access the data that passes through its networks. Huawei itself vehemently denies it has ever helped any intelligence service with espionage requests.
Overall, #Europe's response to concerns about Huawei has been: Show us proof, then we’ll consider the actions. In critical markets such as #Germany, #France and the #UnitedKingdom, authorities have charged security agencies with verifying telecom equipment. In the U.K., Huawei has a longstanding deal with the intelligence agency GCHQ to have its equipment audited at a center called 'the Cell,' in Banbury, a provincial town in southeast England, where cybersecurity experts check its code for backdoors.

The Australian government and #Huawei are now so at odds that one of the global giant’s local executives and Home Affairs Minister #PeterDutton entirely disagree on what was said during a meeting in July, a month before the government decided to ban Chinese suppliers from supplying equipment to #Australia’s next generation #5G mobile network on August 23. Huawei head of corporate affairs Jeremy Mitchell this week claimed he and chairman John Lord were told by Dutton during the meeting the Americans had 'dropped the ball' and allowed China to become a global leader in #telecommunications equipment.
But it wasn’t a hard decision for the nation’s security agencies to recommend to the Turnbull government that the global giant and other Chinese providers be banned from involvement in the next stage of high-speed mobile infrastructure, called 5G. One of the reasons for this is undoubtedly Australia’s relationship with a high-powered group of spy chiefs from the ' #fiveeyes' intelligence-sharing countries - Australia, the #UnitedStates, #Britain, #Canada and #NewZealand.

Unlike the #FiveEyes countries, #Germany's technology watchdog says it cannot find any evidence #Huawei is a security risk. #NewZealand's spy agency the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) in November effectively banned Spark from teaming up with the Chinese firm to build its #5G network.
For such serious decisions like a ban, you need proof, according to #ArneSchoenbohm, the head of Germany's Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). He said they couldn't find any evidence, even after examining products and its lab in the German city of Bonn.

As the #UnitedStates continues its campaign to urge allies not to use #Huawei equipment for #5G networks, not everyone is convinced. #Germany’s top authority overseeing computer and communications security is pushing back on claims that the Chinese firm poses a security risk.
#ArneSchönbohm, the president of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) noted that Huawei has gone above and beyond what other firms have done, opening a 'security lab' in Bonn, the city where BSI is based. The facility allows customers to inspect Huawei products, including the source code of software.

Critics blast President Donald #Trump for suggesting he might 'intervene' in the #JusticeDepartment’s pending prosecution of a prominent Chinese executive so his administration can resolve a growing trade dispute with #China. 'We are not a tool of trade when we bring the cases,' Assistant Attorney General John Demers told a Senate panel. Demers was responding to a question from Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn. Sitting beside Demers, the FBI’s top counterintelligence official, Assistant Director Bill Priestap, said he agreed with Demers, adding, 'From the FBI’s end, we’re going to continue to do our job.'

The Chinese #telecoms giant #Huawei is to spend $2bn (£1.5bn) in an effort to alleviate British security services’ concerns about vulnerabilities in its products, capping a torrid week for the firm. In July, a British government centre established to verify the integrity of Huawei’s technology warned that it had security concerns about the company’s technology and could only provide 'limited assurance' that risks to national security had been mitigated. BT confirmed it was removing Huawei equipment from key areas of its #4G network over concerns about the Chinese firm’s presence in critical telecoms infrastructure.
In 2010 the company struck an agreement with the British government to set up the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre in Banbury, Oxfordshire, to mitigate any potential risks arising from the use of the company’s products in national infrastructure. Its work is overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre, an arm of GCHQ.
