Kauai is an island in the mid-Pacific, part of the Hawaiian archipelago. It's nicknamed "the Garden Isle" thanks to the tropical rainforest covering much of its surface. The dramatic cliffs and pinnacles of its Na Pali Coast have served as backdrop for major Hollywood films.
The Hanakapiai or Kalalau Trail, beginning in Haena at Ke'e Beach, is a world renowned north shore Kauai hiking trail offering some of the best views of the scenic and dramatic northwest Na Pali Coastline that you can enjoy from land.
This trail takes you into Kalalau Valley, ending at a secluded beach 11 miles up the trail. Used by both locals and visitors, this hike won't leave you disappointed (don't forget the camera!).
If you are visiting Kauai and are a hiking or outdoor enthusiast, hiking the Kalalau Trail is definitely a Kauai activity you should add to your bucket list.
While the Kalalau Trail along Kauai's Napali Coastline is (usually) open to the public year round, there are better times to visit and hike this north shore trail than others.
The best time to hike into Kalalau Valley is first thing in the morning during the summer months (May to Oct.) when the trail is dry, in decent condition, and you have more daylight hours.
Best Time: Mid May - Early October
Most Dangerous Time: December - February

The last day of the April trip to Tenerife. The night before, we were returning from Putno de Teno and a small kitten jumped out to the road in front of the car. I barely managed to slow down and stop in time. It turned out that there was a whole brood of kittens, whom we fed with the restof our provision. The next day Sashka convinced me to go there again to feed the kittens once more time. We did not meet the kittens, but we stopped at the nearest beach, where I found this location. Far away on the cliff you can see the only road to Cape Putno de Teno. This road was washed away last year and a dozen tourists were stuck on the headland without the opportunity to return home.
