Oil sands companies are adapting to changing global energy system by supporting carbon pricing, lowering emissions. The attitudes of Albertans toward climate change were in the news again a few weeks ago. This former Alberta PC political operative's views are fairly mainstream in Alberta. Those views put him offside with Alberta’s oil sands CEOs – and represent a major risk to Albertans. #Alberta #ClimateChange #Oilsands

It is another hot, hot summer in the Northern Hemisphere. In Canada, British Columbia has, once again, declared a state of emergency, and Calgary has air quality problems because of the smoke. As researchers who watch these things know, all of this is being made worse by climate change. The remarkably hot summer and surge of wildfires coincides with the publication of a recent essay about “Hothouse Earth” by Will Steffen, Johan Rockström and their colleagues. The essay bluntly asks whether the Earth is heading towards a state it last experienced many million years ago when global temperatures were much higher and the world didn’t have polar icecaps. #HotHouseEarth #Wildfires #ClimateChange

A new set of climate visualizations, communicating the long term rise in temperatures for particular locations as a changing set of colours from blue to red. https://goo.gl/GVn68g

Each stripe represents the temperature of a single year, ordered from the earliest available data to now. If there was no trend, the bars would be random. #climatechange #WarmingStripes

Dr Pethiyagoda draws our attention to the increase in carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere in the past few decades. The 0.01% increase, from 0.03% to 0.04% carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has escalated the earth’s temperature, radically altering sensitive ecosystems like oceans, forests; while leading to extreme weather conditions threatening the survival of many species.
