Helping you sleep easier
The Center for Sleep Medicine uses the latest technology to diagnose sleep disorders in adults and children in a comfortable, contemporary setting.

Sleep & your health

Are you sleepy during the day, feel groggy upon waking, snore loudly or gasp for breath at night? If so, then you may have a sleep disorder.

Sleeping problems such as sleep apnea can affect your everyday life in many ways, and can have a big impact on your health. They can increase your risk for heart disease, high blood pressure or stroke. They can even increase your risk of having a car accident. If you think you may have a sleep disorder, you may require a sleep study—we can help.

Sleep study at Northern Westchester Hospital

Sleep studies are performed at The Center for Sleep Medicine, a state-of-the-art facility at Northern Westchester Hospital with patient arrivals between 7pm and 10pm.

Your study will be overseen by our center’s director, who works closely with your physician and our team of technologists and consulting staff who are experts in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Unlike sleep studies at home, your sleep study at NWH can diagnose the underlying medical condition causing the sleep disturbance. The hospital sleep lab can test for more than 80 different sleep disorders, providing more accurate measures.

Each private monitoring suite is equipped with a bathroom, shower and cable television for your comfort and convenience. Once you’ve settled in, the technologist connects you to the monitoring equipment via stick-on electrode patches without the use of any needles. The hookup procedure takes approximately one hour.

The study is conducted throughout the evening while you sleep. In most cases, you’ll be able to leave for your normal routine early the next morning.

Accreditation

The Center for Sleep Medicine has achieved The American Academy of Sleep Medicine 5-year Accreditation. This means we have demonstrated a commitment to the highest quality of care in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.

Understanding sleep apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious and very common disorder that causes breathing difficulty during sleep. It occurs when your airway is constricted, which may briefly interrupt your breathing, reducing your oxygen intake and lowering oxygen levels in your blood. As your body struggles to get the oxygen it needs, it forces air through a narrowed airway, which causes loud snoring.

There are several treatment options for sleep apnea, including positive airway pressure (PAP), oral appliances and surgery. Our staff at the Center for Sleep Medicine is committed to helping you find the one that is right for you.
