Your mother-baby experience

Preparing for the birth of your baby is an exciting time—and of course, there are lots of decisions to make. We’re here to help. Your mother-baby experience with us includes:

  • A dedicated mother-baby navigator who helps you prepare to give birth. Your navigator will guide you from pregnancy to delivery, coordinating your care between the hospital and your obstetrician’s office, including hospital preregistration for delivery.
    • Mother-Baby Orientation with the Navigator: This live session is offered most Wednesday evenings. We recommend attending between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. An orientation is highly encouraged for all families who are delivering at Northern Westchester Hospital for the first time. Please note we are currently not offering in-person tours.
    • C-Section Orientation with the Navigator: If you know you are having a scheduled cesarean section (C-section), register for the C-section orientation. This session is highly encouraged for all families having a scheduled C-section at our hospital. You do not need to attend both the mother-baby orientation and the C-section orientation, as there is information overlap.
    • Questions about orientation? Please call (914) 666-1840 or email us at [email protected].
  • A personalized birthing experience that helps you prepare for admission, delivery, postpartum care and bringing your baby home. The navigator will help you create an individualized birth profile that tells us your preferences in advance. To fill out the profile, be sure to download the file to your computer first. Once downloaded, you can open a fillable version of the form file by selecting it from your computer’s list of downloaded documents. Perfil para el parto en español.
  • Baby University, a prenatal education program that offers new and growing families information on childbirth, breastfeeding, safe sleep practices, infant safety and more. We even have grandparent and sibling classes to help family members transition into their new roles. Sign up for Baby University.

Preparing for baby

Before delivery/birth certificate information

Prior to admission:

  • Pack a bag a few weeks prior to your due date so you’re ready to go at a moment’s notice.
  • Checklist for mom: insurance card, eyeglasses, robe/slippers, hair bands, lip balm, books, basic toiletries, breastfeeding pillow, nursing bra, breast pads, maternity underwear and comfy clothes to wear home.
  • Checklist for support person: snacks, phone charger, basic toiletries and a change of clothes.
  • Checklist for baby: infant car seat, receiving blanket, socks, hat, and clothes for going home.
  • Fill out a birth certificate application (in English and Spanish), which is required to receive a birth certificate for your baby. It's best to fill this out ahead of time. If you have questions, call our Birth Registrar at (914) 666-1858.
  • Unmarried parents can complete the Acknowledgement of Parentage form prior to hospital discharge. This form can be filled out before delivery but cannot be signed until after the child is born.
  • Be ready with a properly installed car seat to take your baby home. Schedule a car seat safety check.

The day of your delivery:

  • Bring your ID and park in the garage. There are two “stork parking spaces” on the entrance level of the parking garage to be used for short-term parking until mom is settled in the labor and delivery unit.
  • Enter through the main entrance, Wallace Pavilion, from 6:30am to 9pm or through the emergency department 9pm to 6:30am.
  • Go to Maternal-Child Health on the 3rd floor. There, you will be escorted to your private room.

Safe sleep practices

Every year, around 3,500 babies in the United States die suddenly and unexpectedly while they're sleeping. Most are due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), the death of an infant under 1 year old that remains unexplained after a thorough investigation. Unsafe sleep and SIDS are the leading cause of death in infants between 1 month and 1 year of age, with most deaths occurring when a baby is between 2 and 4 months of age.

That’s why it’s so important to know safe sleep practices for infants.

Safe: Babies should sleep on their backs for all naps and at night.

Unsafe: Babies should NOT sleep on their tummies or sides, or in places other than cribs/bassinets/play yards.

This means baby should NOT sleep in:

  • Adult beds
  • Baby slings
  • Car seats
  • Couches or armchairs

Also, your baby should NOT: sleep with pets, other children or adults, blankets or other bedding, crib bumpers or stuffed toys.
