Junior Volunteer Program at North Shore University Hospital

This is a year-round program for high school students. Beginning Spring 2025 volunteers must be at least 15 years old and are required to complete 100 hours commitment in their first year. Preference will be given to students who can volunteer during the week. The number of volunteers we accept is based on hospital needs and the number of volunteer positions available.

Commitment:
You are required to commit to weekly shifts. We can only provide verification of hours once you have fulfilled your commitment to the program. Once you are accepted, you are required to complete orientation, on-site training and receive a medical clearance from Northwell Employee Health Services before you can start. Our department onboards junior volunteers for North Shore University Hospital and Northwell Health Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation. All junior volunteer roles are assigned two- to three-hour weekly shifts. Assignments and schedules are arranged based upon availability.

Shift times during the school year:
Monday–Friday: 4pm– 6pm
Saturday–Sunday: 9am – 4pm

The Auxiliary

For more than 70 years, the dedicated volunteers of the Auxiliary have been a driving force behind North Shore University Hospital's growth and compassionate care. As goodwill ambassadors and a vital link to the community, we raise funds and support essential programs that touch the lives of countless patients and their families.

The Auxiliary's fundraising efforts directly benefit a wide range of vital programs and services, including:

  • Patient care & support: Stroke Support Club, chaplaincy, Child Life services, palliative care, Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP), neonatal intensive care unit support
  • Hospital enhancements: Cardiac catheterization lab, air ambulance helipad
  • Community outreach: Northwell Health Walk
  • Future health care professionals: Nursing awards and scholarships, Junior Volunteer Program awards

We raise funds by hosting a variety of engaging fundraising events throughout the year, such as:

  • Brick and bench sales for our Auxiliary Commemorative Walkway
  • Car raffle
  • Garden of Heroes Flag sale
  • Annual golf classic
  • Photo contest
  • Vendor sales

You do not need to be a hospital volunteer to make a difference as an Auxilian. We welcome new members and new ideas. To become a member or make a donation, call the Volunteer Experience Department at (516) 562-4947.

Champions for Charity

Our Auxiliary is participating in the Champions for Charity® at the Americana Manhasset. When you shop there December 5-7, 25% of your purchases will be donated to the Auxiliary. Help us enhance care for our tiniest patients and their families.
