Overview

Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (MEETH) is a specialized center that focuses on high-quality care for eye, ear and throat conditions—but that's not all we do. We provide advanced treatments for thousands of patients each year, offering a range of services and expert care.

And to say we’re pioneers is an understatement. We have an extraordinary history of firsts. We opened the first allergy clinic in 1916, performed the first modern cataract surgery in 1967, opened the first cochlear implant center in 1983, and most recently, performed the first insertion of the Baha Attract hearing device in 2013. And that’s just to name a few.

MEETH highlights include:

  • Ambulatory services in ophthalmology, otolaryngology (ENT), orthopedics, podiatry, plastic surgery, urology, vascular surgery, gynecology, dental surgery and general surgery
  • 17 operating rooms equipped with the latest technology for surgery
  • Highly specialized medical and clinical staff consisting of skilled professionals across multiple disciplines, all collaborating to deliver the best care for you
  • 7 outpatient practices including the Infusion Center, Primary Care Center, Center for Attention and Learning, Outpatient Center for Mental Health, ophthalmology, physical therapy and plastic surgery

Hospital history

MEETH opened its doors to patients on October 15, 1869, at its original location, 223 East 34th Street. At the time, much of the city did not have access to many vital services and the lack of basic health care drastically affected everyday life. Faced with this reality, the New York state legislature issued a charter to found a voluntary, nonprofit hospital whose mission was to “…alleviate the sufferings of the poor, the prevention of pauperism, and the cultivation and diffusion of sound knowledge of all that relates to the diseases of the eye and ear.”

Since its founding, MEETH has built upon its proud tradition of providing patient-centered care and has grown to become the world-renowned facility that it is today. Over the years the research conducted at MEETH has resulted in hundreds of new or improved techniques in diagnosis and treatment, new instrumentation, and vital breakthroughs in the fields of medicine and surgery.

Today, MEETH is home to over 400 employees who work hard to ensure that you have the best and safest experience possible.
