Lilith magazine
Founded in 1976, Lilith’s mission is to be the feminist change-agent in and for the Jewish community: amplifying a wide spectrum of Jewish feminist voices; inspiring an inclusive, intersectional and creative approach to Jewishness; advocating for gender justice in the Jewish world; and empowering women, girls and gender expansive people of every background to envision and enact change in their own lives and the larger community.
Now, Lilith has entered our 50th year as a pioneering voice for Jewish feminism, through first-person narratives, reviews, reporting, art, all genres of creative writing, and myriad forms of truth-telling. Lilith is different and defiant, in keeping with the spirit of both our namesake and our tagline: independent, Jewish & frankly feminist.
FAQs
Isn’t Lilith a demon?
According to legend, Lilith was the first woman, created even before Eve. Lilith felt herself to be Adam’s equal (“We are both from the earth”) but Adam refused to accept her equality. Lilith, determined to retain her independence and dignity, and choosing loneliness over subservience, flew away from Adam and the Garden of Eden.
Jewish tradition and folklore characterized Lilith after her escape as a demon. But Lilith’s founding mothers knew the truth. Even before Vashti, Miriam, and Ruth, she was the first feminist.

What do you mean by feminism?
Simple! The idea that every human should be able to fulfill their potential and dreams and live a life of dignity and joy no matter their gender. We should all be free. We should all be feminists.
