The holiday spirit came to life today at JVS during our annual Holiday Party for participants in the Disability Services department. Our Montclair site was decked out in all things winter as participants socialized with their friends, showed off their dance moves, and enjoyed a lunch cooked and served by students from the Essex County Vocational Technical School in West Caldwell.
We thank everyone involved for a joyful day, and from all of us at JVS, Happy Holidays!

As the weather gets colder and the holidays approach, the mid-year slump often sets in. Overcoming it is even more difficult for refugee families who are new to our country and the school system.
To ease the strain, JVS’s Refugee Services department held a workshop on Monday for refugee parents called “Mid-Year: Reflect, Reset, Regain.” JVS case managers discussed certain aspects of the U.S. school system that may be unfamiliar to families, and in doing so, equipped them with practical ways to manage the infamous slump.
Speaking in both English and Haitian Creole, case managers spoke with parents about understanding report cards, following up with teachers, re-engaging children in learning, and planning for the rest of the school year.
The workshop was funded by the RSIG (Refugee School Impact Grant) program.

This past Friday, we celebrated and said farewell to Danny Carter, our security guard. For over 10 years, when clients, staff, and visitors walked through our doors in East Orange, Danny was the first one to greet them. He has worked tirelessly to keep us all safe, and to make sure each person entering JVS gets connected to the services they need.
Danny, your absence will be felt by all. We thank you for 10+ years of dedicated service and wish you all the best as you enter your well-deserved retirement.

They were even shown the locker rooms, which are usually off limits. Along the way, stadium employees discussed their various roles (parking lot crew, janitorial crew, food prep, game day operations, etc.) and what their daily tasks involve.

Celebrating International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD)
This annual observance was established by the United Nations and is celebrated every year on December 3.
