Asylum applications nosedive in Germany and Sweden

Germany and Sweden registered some 225,000 and 15,500 asylum applications in the first half of 2016. More than one million people applied for asylum last year in Germany, and 163,000 in Sweden. The drop comes after the closing of the Balkan route in March and a deal with Turkey to stop people from leaving for Greece.
