99,000 asylum applications in May

Some 99,000 applications for asylum were lodged among EU states in May. Figures from the EU asylum agency EASO indicated that 96% had never before lodged an application for international protection. Most are Syrians, followed by people from Afghanistan and Iraq. Applicants from the three countries represent 55% of all applications in May. Around 2,633, or 2.7%, also "claimed to be unaccompanied minors". Of those, 42% were Afghan minors.
