270 Strategies is a progressive digital strategy firm founded in 2013 by Jeremy Bird and Mitch Stewart. Bird and Stewart both previously worked as field organizers for President Barack Obama in 2008 and had senior positions in Obama's 2012 presidential re-election.[1] 270 Strategies focuses on "helping organizations engage everyday people in their work."[2] Some of 270's previous clients include Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D), New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (D), Pennsylvania State Sen. Anthony Williams (D) and Ready for Hillary—a super PAC in support of Hillary Clinton (D).

Background

270 Strategies was founded in 2013 by Jeremy Bird and Mitch Stewart, both veterans of President Barack Obama's 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns. In 2008, Bird was a field organizer in South Carolina; Stewart held the same position in Iowa. In 2012, Stewart was the Obama campaign's battleground states director, and Bird worked as the national field director.[3] According to the firm's website, 270 began as an extension of the two's experiences with the Obama campaign: "We were honored to serve President Obama and wanted to keep doing big things to change the world."[4]

One of the guiding principles of 270 Strategies is that "grassroots organizing can transform communities."[4] In Israel's 2015 elections, 270 strategized for Victory 15, a group opposing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Jerusalem Post noted that the firm "operates in elections on the principle of grassroots community organization, dividing the countries into local zones and working them incessantly and efficiently."[5] 270's focus on individuals and grassroots organization extends to its digital operations. In the 2016 campaign cycle, the firm approached online fundraising through personal emails, according to 270's vice president Martha Patzer: "As people receive more and more media and messages, we're trying to create more personalized experiences for ourselves. How many times a day do you use the subject line 'Hey' or 'Quick Question'? We wanted it to feel approachable, casual, inclusive, really authentic."[6]

In addition to work in Israel's 2015 election, 270 Strategies has advised electoral and issue campaigns across the country. They were the digital strategy team for Ready for Hillary, a super PAC that encouraged Hillary Clinton to seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2016.[7] Ready for Hillary changed its name to Ready PAC when Clinton announced her candidacy and slowly began to "wind down as the Clinton campaign builds up."[8]

According to its website, 270 Strategies also worked with:

  • Planned Parenthood to "educate eligible, uninsured women about what the Affordable Care Act means for them — and how to get covered."[9]
  • Cory Booker's U.S. Senate campaign, where they "worked with field leadership to establish systems of accountability, design their staff and volunteer training programs, and execute a first-rate organizing program that would register, persuade, and turn out enough voters to carry Mayor Booker to victory."[10]
  • Farmigo, a locally sourced food distribution group, for which 270 "trained and coached staff on community organizing strategies and tactics, and helped them set goals and create reporting systems."[11]
  • ResponsibleOhio, a group supporting a marijuana legalization initiative in Ohio in 2015.[12]
