Zini, me & life in general

Trains!!!

No it’s not the name of a new movie made by Disney Pixar after cars and planes…This is all about how i share a love-hate relationship with trains…

Yes, I know a lot of you love to travel by trains (including Zini and my hubby) but I somehow get worried and excited with train travels at the same time…Weird, i know but I have my reasons …

The biggest issue is that all my travel partners are so obsessed about reaching the station early, at least before an hour!! Yes an hour!! I kid not!! And then long painful wait of the train starts. I remember my papa plonking us on station in SUMMER vacation!! Summer is the keyword here…

My hubby too shares this obsession of my papa. We both haggle about the starting time and finally he too manages to get us on station at least before 45 minutes. And then Zini goes berserk!! She wants to explore everything on the station and wants to touch every corner!! And after some time she gets tired and wants me to pick her up!! No papa won’t do, mumma has to pick Zini up  !!!

And don’t get me started about the hygiene in and outside trains!! A lot of stations are very dirty and toilets on the train are a nightmare and madam Zini refuses to use diaper which means 2-3 visits to this hell…Enough said…

Sleeping on a train was already a difficult thing for me and since I started travelling with Zini, it has almost become impossible. I just can’t sleep on the same berth as Zini (the berths are too tiny) and Zini won’t sleep without mummy, which essentially means that I stay awake :(

This doesn’t mean that I completely abhor train journey, I have some happy memories of train travel too. Our great vacations have started with train journeys!! I have fond memories of travelling with my family!! I totally loved eating thepla, puri and sukhdi during those journeys (yeah, my mom too shares my OCD of homemade food)…Though sometimes she relented and let us buy those tempting but totally unhygienic things from station and cutlets from the pantry…

My train travel after my wedding, where both mine and hubby’s family traveled together felt totally like a picnic!! From every compartment we could hear loud laughing people (yeah we are a loud lot) and everybody was munching on something or the other (and yeah, we all love to eat)…

I also remember the 1st train journey that hubby and I took after 2 weeks long wedding festivities to go to Hyderabad… For the first time we were together and it finally sank in that we were married!! It was indeed a very special train journey…After that we continued to make a lot train travels and had adventures with the trains too..

P.S.: If you hear a folklore about a young girl travelling on train and buying and eating chana puri from each station, then believe me, the story is totally true!!

One more comeback…

No i am not talking about some bollywood actress…I am talking about myself :)

I am back from a long break. I have disappeared many times before but this has been the longest i have been away from the blog world!! Not that i planned to. I knew that i won’t be able blog frequently for some time. But i had kept a few posts ready to be posted when i was very busy. however i couldn’t even publish the already written posts!! Similarly, reading posts appearing on my reader and commenting on them became almost impossible, only the ones appearing in my mail box were read, though not commented upon :(

I know i owe an explanation.. So here it is (or they are),

1) It was Zini’s vacation time which meant she was at home all the time, crawling all over my mind, leaving no mindspace for anything else.

2) We had guests at home. It started with my parents, then in-laws, my maasi, hubby’s bua and sister, hubby’s one more cousin, friends and neighbours from Ahmedabad and finally my cousin. Oh and this weekend one more guest is expected!! With our favorite people around, we were busy shopping, cooking, travelling around and spoiling Zini!! So blogging had to take back seat. And in between I traveled to Ahmedabad!! Where a loved one was hospitalized, much much better now. Touchwood.

3) All of us fell sick. First it was hubby, then Zini and finally me!! So since last 3 weeks we are digging in to khichdis and daals :(

4) I took up a freelancing project of content development, which is still not completely complete. But we are almost there!!! I did a lot of late nights and early mornings during peak work time. Hopefully now, I am done with the work. I have also been writing for IMC. Check out my post here.

Now, Zini’s vacation has ended and our health is much better (though i am still eating khichdi) and this essentially means that i am back to blog world :)

So people, get ready to get your mail-box spammed with the comments (and i have many to make ;) )…

I hate TV…..

Some of you already know that we don’t have a cable connection at home…We decided not to have it because we didn’t want Zini to get addicted to the TV!! Even I am prone to TV addiction!! So for everybody’s sanity we decided not to have the menace in our home.. And i saw that my friend Leena had not taken the TV connection at home and was surviving alright, so it seemed doable!!

Technically we have a Tata sky connection, but we don’t recharge it for most of the time…But when my in-laws visit us we recharge it and then starts the assault of TV on me!! From each and every direction!! And they are here, so is the TV!!!

Now you may ask, why am i so irritated by the TV..Then i have a long list..

1st of all, after 5 months of (relative) peace, when the TV starts blaring loudly, it just gives me headache!! I have realized that my ears are now accustomed to the absence of that electronic noise!!

2nd is the kind of programs!! I mean, all the programs that are aired in our drawing room are so offensive and so 18th century!! There is nothing good happening in the lives of the people in those programs. Then women are always seen plotting, then there is this tendency of showing overdose of Sanskar where the ghar ki izzat is attached to the women of the house!! And this izzat is protected by controlling the women, sometimes by even locking them inside a room!! All this is soooo very revolting…. I try to bury myself in a nice P G Wodehouse book, but still this offensive things manage to get into my ears and in my mind, leaving me angry :(

Also in all the programs about Gujarati families, there is a background score playing “He ji Re”!!! Puh leaze, give us a break!! With this rate i may start hearing this damn “He ji Re” in my mind while talking to my mom

Then there is this CNBC TV18, my hubby’s favorite channel!! I would have teared my already in danger hair watching it, if there wouldn’t have been Mitali Mukerji on that channel!!!

And let’s not forget Doremon!! Zini is now officially addicted to it (in just 20 days)!!! If there has to be only one reason for  not recharging the connection then this reason  is enough for me… I would rather let her watch Barney and mickey mouse clubhouse on youtube rather than letting her watch Doremon…

And very shamefacedly i’ll have to admit that even i am not left behind…During the time when my in-laws were not around and i had full access to the TV. i had marathon movie sessions!! So i watched ice age, inception (3rd time), Avatar (5th time), Mr Popper’s panguins (2nd time), the hot chick (1.5th times – 1st time i couldn’t watch the whole movie), Mirror Mirror, X Men First class, Johnny English (2nd time), Fantastic four (3rd time) and some more that now i have forgotten about..

So for torturing me, for polluting my surroundings and finally for controlling me, I hate TV…

Moksha!!

As promised here is my Moksha story…

In the long weekend of Gudi padwa, we visited a small hill station called Parwanoo in HP. The place was near Ludhiana, so we went there 1st and along with hubby’s uncle auntie we visited the resort Moksha located there!!

It is amazing (also amazingly costly, but totally worth it. One day when we will have money we are going to stay there)!!! They have swimming pool on the top of the hill and you can see valley from the pool!! The restaurant too has an amazing view of valley where you can see reservoir created by Kaushalya dam…

The place had so many strategically placed hang out zones with cool breeze urging you to take it easy and enjoy the  view and the weather!!! And not to mention the exotic spas they have!!! There were sooooo many options available in their spas that i wanted to try all of them!!! But with Zini around i couldn’t try a single one :(

Though they were nice enough to give us a guided tour to the place…

The rooms there were also amazing, with a big balcony with great views and bay windows!! The rooms (or rather suites) had it all!!! I can see myself curled at the bay window with a nice book and coffee!!! Hubby, are you listening?!?

You reach there by a cable care so Zini had her 1st cable car ride and she got amazingly excited at flying in a cabin!!! Then we bought the passes to go up to the resort and were driven up in a golf cart!! The place had such a calming effect with cool breeze, biiiiiiiiiig, fragrent and colourful flowers, flowing fountains and small pools and the amazing view of the valley!!

And of course the food was yumm…

I soooo wished to stay there, but we had to return…

So return we did and stayed back at Ludhiana. Zini has now started calling the place Gudiana

As usual she bathed in Tubewell and fed the dogs!!! This time i made Haandvo (last time my MIL made it and Ludhinaites loved it, so this time i was to make it :) )In short we all enjoyed :)

Here are some pics….

What made me happy!!!

Last week I was feeling low but then i realized that there are lots of things that made me happy also.. So i decided to concentrate on happy memories and here is the post….

My parents are here!!! Yes, finally my papa too made it…Though technically they are not here as of now, as they have gone to Delhousie. but they came here, stayed for 3 days and will be coming back here from Delhousie and will be spending a week here, Yaaay!!!! This itself deserves a post….

We visited a resort called Moksha at a small hillstation in Himachal Pradesh!!! It was AWESOME!!!! I think i’ll do a detailed post on that, if not for anything else then for the swimming pool they have…
But visiting Moksha meant that we weren’t around on the weekend hence I missed meeting Smita :(  but we talked on phone. And had a delightful conversation!!! It didn’t feel that we were talking for the 1st time…We talked (complained about) our respective kids :) about our life, Smita’s recent travels!!! Naively i had thought that Gaziabad is a small place like Noida, and i would be able to reach there within minutes. but after talking to Smita i realized that was not the case!! Had to go Jamuna paar to reach her place and i couldn’t make it to her place :(

Zini started going to a new school!!! And she is pretty much settled there…Touch wood… This too is a play school but, the school has the classes upto 12th standard. So from play school Zini will graduate to Nursery and then to 1st Standard in the same school!! Phew…That’s one biiiiiiiiig worry taken care of… Also going to this school means that she spends a little longer time in commute, hence  i get an extra hour and i am enjoying that extra hour!!!! I know i am a wicked mom ;)

Now because i get an extra hour, i had to take advantage of it!! So my friends and i watched movie!!! So much of fun!! No Zini and lots of popcorn, pepsi and nachos…Yummm!! We watched Nautanki Saala BTW…It was ok, but hey who cares about how was it?! It was a movie and i watched it without anybody shouting my name, or pulling my sleeves or sleeping in my lap!!! That’s great…Don’t you think so?!?

It has been raining awards for me!!! 1st Sonali, Nilu, Reni and Pritivery kindly shared Liebster Blog Award with me (I’ll do the post soon I just did the award post)!!!

And now, a kind member of BlogAdda team thinks that I am a Notable Newbie!!!

So yes, my profile is featured as Notable Newbie on BlogAdda, Thanks a lot!!! Check it out people…Isn’t it cool?!?! Well i don’t like the word housewife and i don’t do a lot of chores (if you will visit my home, you will know :) ) but we will let it pass….Coz i am happy!!!  BlogAdda has very kindly updated the page as per my request, Thanks again, I am happier :)

i started with a sole purpose of recording Zini’s antics… But then i started torturing you guys with my random thoughts and other tales also ;) !!! And then i became adventurous enough to start a new blog – A Food blog – to record My Cooking Adventures!!!

Thanks a lot for sticking around and encouraging me with your comments and visits!!!

And in true award ceremony style i would also like to thank my family and friends, especially my hubby (who is looking after Zini right now, so that i can do this post ;) ) and my cousin Jigar – these 2 people encouraged me to start blogging…And of course Zini – without her antics life would be boring and i wouldn’t have started the blog in 1st place…My parents who encouraged me to read (and as a byproduct i started writing – i actually wrote a story about a lost pigeon when i was in 4th standard – only my parents and my friends read it)!!! And my friends, who read my blog and encouraged me to continue!!!

I think i’ll stop my Oscar speech now and show off my new and shiny Notable Newbie Award :) !!!

My Notable Newbie Badge!!!

Distressing Day….

Yesterday was one distressing day…

1st there was an earthquake, which lasted only for 5 seconds physically, but has still not left my mind…

It reminded me of that black day of 26th Jan, 2001… For the 1st time i felt real fear. I realized that the place you call home, where you can run away to hide from every problem of yours, where you feel safe and belonged and where your loved ones stay, that place can actually kill you!!!

I remember my cousin had called to wish me, coz he was out of town on my birthday. After we finished talking, he was talking to my mom on the phone…And then it happened…Suddenly the room started vibrating violently, 1st thought that came to my mind was that some huge bulldozer has collided with our flats (effect of watching some movie, i think), then i realized that how absurd that thought was. i came running out and shouted for everybody to get out of the house…Mom was still on the phone, on the other side of the line my auntie too shouted to get out. Thankfully my brother was already downstairs, so my papa, mummy and i rushed out of the house and went down running…Leaving the house, i saw the devastation that was happening in our home…All the cupboard doors had opened and were banging violently…The crockery and dabbas were falling out.

The earthquake continued even after we reached down. I could see the door of balcony banging and the small decorative hangings in the balcony oscillating eerily….

I could see big cracks appearing in the flat accompanied by noise.

And then it stopped.

But there were devastating effects of that earthquake. Everybody was calling each other frantically. mobile networks were jammed. We went to see our relative staying in the same flat. The auntie was badly shaken, she didn’t remember a thing about that earthquake. It seemed that those few seconds had been wiped off her memory.

Then someone told that the Mansi tower had fallen. I couldn’t believe it, i thought of it as a rumor. But when we went to the other gate of our flats, i could see that it actually had fallen!!! It all sounded so impossible, how can Mansi tower fall down, i mean i pass by it everyday. It was hard to believe that all this was happening to us. You always think that such things happen to other people, you think you are just normal people doing normal things. And things like these happen in far away lands and you hear about them in news. But there it was, happening to us, to our city and lots of other cities around. There was a lot of destruction and as a result many people lost there lives and all earthly belongings. We counted our blessings that at least we were safe and our home was not shattered.

i remember us going back to home after an hour, to pack our bags and clean up. We shifted to my grandfather’s place which was on ground floor. We stayed there for a month and then finally returned home. But i still remember a black bag, sitting in drawing room, filled with some important documents, money and cloths. To be picked up while running from the house in case of emergency.

We all were glued to news channels. There were horrific scenes at a lot of places. The Kutch region was worst hit. Ahmedabad also had seen lots of destruction with falling of many towers and flats. Colleges and schools were closed for a month. I remember mummy papa going to office later and me worrying sick for there safety.

Yesterday when this earthquake happened in Iran and the tremors were felt here, i didn’t worry much. i took my phone and keys and was about to pick up sleeping Zini to get out of the house and it stopped, so i didn’t go out. But then i received a call from my papa, who asked me if i we were ok. He didn’t tell me that they too felt the tremors and with no cable connection at home i too didn’t know. Then my mom called she too asked about us without telling me they too felt tremors. Then my hubby called, he was not in the city and wanted to ensure that we were ok. My maami called and then she told me that they too had felt tremors but. And that’s when i got worried. Immediately my maasi called and told me how she felt her 9th floor flat rocking and the utensils falling. This got me really worried. All these calls came while i was on the other call, they all stayed in call waiting till i finished the 1st call. In their voices i could feel their love for us. i called up MIL to check on them, it turned out they were sleeping and didn’t know anything about the quake. i thanked God that my family was safe.

And then in the morning, i read the news about terror attack in Boston. It shook me once again. I got the fearfull memories of Hyderabad blasts rushing back to me. We had been to Koti for buying books just 4 days before the blast. And necklace road was a place we frequented often. I remember our neighbour auntie shedding silent tears for her nephew whom she had a lost in a such a mindless blast a few years ago. Once again i realized that it can happen to us. Your city is not safe. I can come to terms with natural calamities, but why do we have this mindless terrorism running rampant in the world? The pain of loosing a loved one to an cowardly act of terrorism can be mind numbing. The world is becoming a dangerous place day by day.

But then i remembered the heart warming stories of people helping each other and help pouring in from every corner of the world. Everybody doing their bit by donating money, cloths, food and most importantly their labour of love. A lot of professionals ran to the affected places and offered their help. There were many fighters who survived the trauma of loosing their loved ones and all the belongings and found love and life again. Stories of little kids being adopted by parents who lost their kids , or people devoting their lives to helping others – all these was inspiring. And then finally i remember my friend’s mom who lost her hand when her flats fell down in that earthquake, but continued to do her favorite things and made lovely dresses. She doesn’t spend her days in self-pity, she does the things she loves, laughs, sings, reads, watches her favorite tv shows and remains happy.

I think i too will try to shake off the worry and do the things that makes me happy.

Surprisingly, this was the question asked to me by my very close friend L recently and it stumped me!!! Though I answered her, saying that I like to hang out with the “Sharif” people like her whom I can spoil and make them “Bigda hua” like me….Which is partly true also, I have managed to turn my good-girl friends a bit bigda hua ;) …

Generally I am friendly with everybody i meet and can even talk to all kind of  and all aged people.  In school and college i was friendly with lots of people. But lately I have realized that i don’t enjoy talking to everyone the way i used to, though i manage a polite conversation in such a situation, after a point i excuse myself.

But the question really got me thinking…So really what kind of people I like to hang out with? How do i click with my friends? So rather than thinking about the qualities, i thought about my friends…

My hubby who was originally my friend (well still he is my friend :) )…The most striking thing about him (in my view) is his honesty…He can call a spade a spade and speak his mind no matter with whom he is talking to. He doesn’t say things for his personal gain, he says it because that is what he thinks….He is also very open and doesn’t believe in hiding anything. I also enjoy his company because when we are together we have fun. We can have interesting discussions with each other and enjoy each other’s company. Also his feet are firmly on ground (well most of the times)….He supports me and understands me; helps me and motivates me..

Then my friend L, who asked me this question…She is one gem of a person. She is a kind of friend everybody would wish for. She is loyal, will support you no matter what, will gently tell you if you make a mistake but will do so in private, will be there for you not matter what and will listen to all your rants at any time of day/night..Again she is painfully honest and very very kind to everyone around her. She can be crazy at times, she once made me stop my scooty at green signal so that she can give money to the beggar at the traffic light!!! (well, craziness is a side effect of being my friend ;) ). She never used to eat out, and with me she started eating out every day, so we would gorge on some pani-puris, daabeli, vada-pao and then only go home!!!

My friend from school, N comes across as a very quiet person. She won’t talk with everybody, some may even find her snooty!!! But we enjoy together. I remember once my brother was admitted to hospital right next to her home. So i would go at her home and we would study together and then talk and play. My mom didn’t have to worry about me. Even after we went to different colleges, we continued to meet. I sometimes attended her classes and she would attend my college festival!!! She too is one of those who speaks their mind and she has many a times whacked some much needed sense in my head. My other friends from school P and P are also one of those who speak their mind. With my absent mindedness i would forget a journal or a book at home but they reminded me to carry it. Sometimes they would even help in finishing my journal when i would have forgotten to complete it!! So it was not a very uncommon site when i was seen writing on a page of my journal and P was seen drawing a diagram on the opposite page!!!

Then my friend M from college again is so much like L. She would stretch for friends and support you no matter what. Both of us, after spending the study vacation like holidays, would panic just before the exams and would study together. So she would shift base to my home and we would end up studying day and night. We were like partners in crime, where crimes ranged from gluttony(expected with me involved!!) to playing pranks, from bunking classes to gossiping and from pulling random legs to talking in the class…

One more close friend from college is H. She is one of the coolest people, who championed studies and fashion with equal ease. We would ask her questions ranging from studies to dresses ,  and she would answer all of them with equal ease!!! and my firm belief is that she would have done equally well (or may be better) had she chosen fashion designing as a career…She was one of those sane voice among the madness. Who would draw a time table for M and me so that we study during study leaves, would shout at us for wasting time…And would take out important questions from previous years papers and share them with us, so that we can do well in exams!!!

So, i realized that all my friends are very honest (sometimes painfully honest) with me, they support me in my hour of need and care for me!!! We have fun when we talk and i can talk about anything with them!!! I really feel very lucky to have these amazing people as my friends!!
