Working on Arts Integration at TBPS

This summer, a team from TBPS attended the Creative Schools Initiative, Arts Integration course. We will be working with master puppeteer, Barbara Paulson throughout the year to address the transferable skill of Responsible and Involved Citizenship.  It's very exiting! For our essential question we are pondering:

What would happen if the kids were in charge?

Students in Pattie Casari's class designed and executed finger puppets as a precursor to 

working with Barbara Paulson in January.

Students in Adrienne Magida's first and second grade class made hand puppets to go along 

with the fairy tales they have been learning about.

A Great First Attempt

Students in Camille Anderson's 4th grade class designed a variety of puppet styles, but the most popular attempt was the marionette! We're looking forward to the expertise of Barbara Paulson to lead us through the craft of puppet making!

Artists Observe

During the two weeks that students were learning about biking skills in PE, they were learning about observation skills in art. Artists observe and notice details they wouldn't necessarily notice unless they were looking closely. Like any skill, if you want to get better at it, you need to practice. This holds true for drawing!

 

Artists also observe when painting. This student wanted to make a replica of The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. This was something she did entirely on her own, driven by her interest. That's one thing I love about choice-based art! That students can learn based on their individual interests is key to their engagement in their own learning!

What Do Artists Do?

On the first day of art for my classes this year, I asked the students to answer the question "What do artists do?". It is refreshing to see what art looks like from the perspective of children. I think that the importance of student voice and introspection cannot be overstated. What do artists do?

Create Make and Learn Summer Course Leads to Excitement and Engagement

What happens when an art teacher takes a Maker's class? We get jazzed about circuitry. Instructor Jill Dawson helped me lead students through a paper circuitry lesson using copper tape, LED lights and batteries. Students were excited to make a simple circuit design that they could light up and take home. Many students asked about using these supplies in their regular art making. Others wanted to know where I got them so that they could get some to use at home. Our next task will be using these skills to add lights to our lanterns for the 6th annual River of Light Parade. This year's theme is BUGS. Can't wait to see what the students will do with them.

The 2015 TBPS Art Show - Details Below

It's always exciting in a Choice Art Studio. What's new about this year's show? As part of the new National Art Standards, we're piloting the Presentation Standard: "Applying the skills and language of specific arts discipline, students will demonstrate the ability to present in the arts." So the students are preparing their work for presentation and will be helping to curate the show. Our goal is that the Art Show will be ready on May 18th. 

There will be a closing reception on Thursday, May 28th from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. If you are unable to make that two hour window, you can come into school beginning May 18th and take a look around. One of the benefits of having students help curate is that they will know exactly where their art is in the show.  We hope you can join us!
