I threw together these beans in about 5 minutes in the crockpot and ran out the door for the day. Oh, my! They were delicious. Just saying! They were good enough for a meal.
I always have homemade chicken broth in the freezer. If you buy roasted chicken or if you make it yourself, don’t forget to boil the bones before you toss them. Store it in the freezer and anytime you need some in a recipe, pull it out,
Also, a piece of bacon never hurts the taste! Again, just saying…..
I only had a little kale and decided to throw that in the last 30 minutes. I loved the addition.
But the smoked ham I used…..and only about 4 ounces of it…..was really good ham. It was not lunch meat but a ham that had been smoked over night by a local church. So, it was quite smoky and delicious all on it’s own. The flavor of it, along with the bacon, was awesome.

Welcome to The Secret Recipe Club reveal day. Each month, I am assigned to another blogger and my instructions are to choose one of the recipes she (or he) has blogged about……and re-create it, adding my own spin to it, if I want. This month, I was assigned to What’s Brewing in the Kitchen and I have looked at many of the recipe posts she has written. I saw so many things that I wanted to try that I had a hard time deciding which to cook.
Amy, from Virginia, is the cook on What’s Brewing in the Kitchen and cooking is her passion (like mine). She started her blog to have a virtual cookbook and has found herself in the company of lots of Foodies with the same goal.
So, I went with her Apple Scones. Two reasons……I have a lot of apples and I have had a hankering for a good scone. And…..oh, my, my……these were delicious scones! I think Amy got the recipe from The Apple Cookbook. I made need that cookbook.
For one thing, these scones are cooked on a griddle in butter. Really? So the outside is browned and a little more done than the inside. The inside remains very moist. Then, dot them with butter. Yea…..more butter…..and serve with a little hot tea. I chose Orange Spice, which went nicely with Cinnamon/Nutmeg flavored Apple Scones.

Here is the recipe. You won’t be disappointed. Thanks Amy!

Recipe Type: Bread
Author: The Apple Cookbook @ What’s Brewing in the Kitchen
- 1 1/2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1 egg
- 1/4 cup Honey Flavored Greek Yogurt (or plain….or buttermilk)
- 1 large apple (I used Fuji)
- Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and nutmeg into a bowl. Add the sugar and mix.
- Cut in the butter with a pastry blender until the mixture resembles large crumbs.
- Add the egg and yogurt and mix well.
- Peel, core and finely chop the apple. Stir into the yogurt mixture.
- The dough will be pretty sticky.
- Divide the dough into 8 even pieces. On a floured surface, pat the dough into a 1/2 inch thick round or football shaped piece. Because they are so sticky, you won’t be able to roll these or do much with them. Flour your hands and the surface really well.
- Heat a griddle or heavy skillet over low to medium heat. Melt butter on it and cook the scones for 5 minutes, until they are golden brown on the bottom. Turn and cook for 4 minutes longer, serve warm.

I really wanted to buy some new bar stools. Really I did! But I just couldn’t let go of my old ones. My kids grew up eating on those stools. I am way too sentimental!
Ok…..I am frugal too. Well, about some things. Furniture buying is one of those things. Really, all they needed was some paint, after all.
The bar stools are for a short bar…..which we had at our old house. The bar in our new house (using the word “new” a little loosely, since we have been in it about 15 years), the bar is standard height and for most people, the bar stools are too short. But for us…..since we are so tall…..we love the short bar stools.
So, I bought some paint. What do you think? I like the way it goes with the brick wall of the bar. You can’t really see it in the photos but the color of the legs is kind of a gray and it pulls out the gray in the brick….which I didn’t really notice before.

I forgot to take a before photo and found this one from awhile back. The grandkids used to love to sit under them. They were pink and white. Really? What was I thinking?

The paint for the legs was a satin finish and the color is called River Rock. It is kind of a grayish tan. The wicker is called Brown Metallic Hammered. It looks really bronze.
So, while I had the bronzy looking paint out, I painted my little outdoor, rusted out table. Cute! I really didn’t even notice the bird on it before.
