Color Dance BOM Month 3

FOLLOW ME @ivory_spring ON INSTAGRAM IF YOU HAVEN’T. Instagram is where I best interact with quilters, and where I share the latest news!

***

Hello Friends – today is the day I start working on the Color Dance BOM quilt. If you are just now hearing about it, HERE are the details. This is a 6-month BOM program. I will be posting the blocks I make on the 17th of each month.

You may read about Month 1 if you missed it HERE.

You may read about Month 2 if you missed it HERE.

SPECIAL NOTE ON PATTERN/KIT:

COLOR DANCE is a special BOM, exclusively designed for QT Fabrics. The only way to access the pattern is through purchasing the kits from participating shops! So, check with your local shops to see if they are participating in the Color Dance program. Also, the BOM program might not happen at the same time as I am running the sewalong. So, you may just follow along until you are able to get your hands on the kits/fabrics.

FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME AT WENDY2@WENDYSHEPPARD IF YOU ARE CURIOUS IF YOUR LOCAL AREA QUILT SHOPS ARE PART OF THIS PROGRAM.

SO FAR, I see that JKQuilts is selling the entire kit (bright version) HERE.

My friend Diane also alerted me that Woodside Quilting in IA is selling the kit as well. In fact, she was cutting the kits a couple of weeks when she texted me. Click HERE for the link.

I am also seeing kits are being sold on Etsy HERE.

SKILL LEVEL – WIN WIN for all skill levels

This is meant to be a beginner friendly project, as well as a seasoned quilter friendly project. A beginner will learn that if one masters the art of making half-square-triangle units (HST), one is more than half way to being able to make 65% of the quilt designs out there happen. And a beginner is able to accomplish a project that doesn’t exactly look like a beginner project.

For a seasoned quilter, sometimes, one might just want something simple with an interesting visual effect. Color Dance is such a quilt.

HERE ARE MY MONTH 3 BLOCKS

A FEW THOUGHTS

1. The aim for Month 3 blocks is to show 2 different ways to make flying geese units. You could either make them the usual way, but you could also make them using half-square-triangle units.

2. You may also use the opportunity to explore whether you like cutting your seams open, or to the other side through the Month 3 blocks. For myself, I generally press my seams open when I construct flying geese units.

That’s it for Color Dance BOM Month 3. I will see you again on January 17 to work on Month 3 blocks. Oh dear — the new year is upon us!

The pattern included in the issue actually features 5 different sizes of quilt you are able to make with the design — FIVE! Get your issue on your local newsstand today. And for my 2-cents this week:

No problem at all if you haven’t made yourself a quilty tree skirt! Regular quilts can be scrunched up a bit to double as tree skirts under your tree! Case in point – see how I have used my Tree Farm quilt (52″ x 52″) as a tree skirt this year. :)

I have shared my 2-cents on quilty Christmas decorating. It’s your turn!

Hello Friends, I hope you have enjoyed your December. I heard some of you have gotten snow. Yikes! I thought I would share with you a picture of my Stars & Snowflakes block. Back in the early part of this year, I misplaced the fabrics I needed to make the rest of the quilt. I finally found the missing fabrics in the process of looking for the backing fabric for my Norfolk sewalong quilt. And… I still haven’t found that backing fabric. :(

You may purchase my Star & Snowflakes pattern PDF HERE.

And for my 2-cents this week:

I find that setting storage baskets on their sides help me fit more fabrics in the baskets. PLUS I can see what are in the baskets!

It’s now your turn to share your 2-cents!

Norfolk Sampler QAL – Check in #11

Hello Friends, today is our LAST check-in for Norfolk Sampler Quilt Along! Can you believe we have been sewing buddies for this ENTIRE year? I want to thank you all for sewing along! I hope you have enjoyed making Norfolk as much as I had in designing and making it!

If you are just now hearing about the Norfolk Sampler quilt — you may find all things Norfolk HERE.

Here are my last blocks using One Fine Day by Moda Fabris.

And here are my sewn sections ready for the final seams to put the quilt top together. I had to snap a picture before it got dark in the family room where I normally take my quilt pictures.

And that’s a wrap my friends! I will share pictures of the finished quilt as soon as I have them. But first, I have to find my backing fabric. With about 20 ongoing quilts at the moment, I honestly don’t remember what I did with the backing fabric…. grrr! It has to be somewhere.

There might be another year long series quilt in the works — are you up to make another BOM quilt with me?

Thank you again for being my sewing buddy this year! I hope you have a lovely rest of your week.

Hello Friends, I hope you are keeping well. Christmas is HERE – it truly is my favorite time of year.

Thank you to those of you who purchased Pine-ing for Christmas pattern over the weekend. I am most appreciative of your support. Pine-ing for Christmas is entirely scrap-friendly. The most tedious part would be to make the 3″ finished Ohio star units, but beyond that, everything else should be a breeze. Honestly, once you get used to handling small pieces, the Ohio star units go quickly as well. I recently made a set of twelve star units finishing at 3″ — it took me a little over 2 1/2 hrs. Not bad.

You may purchase the pattern PDF for Pine-ing for Christmas HERE.

***

Moving on…, the Christmas tree is up, and so far that’s the only thing that is up. This year, I scrunched up an actual quilt to use as the tree skirt. I quite like it. Of course, the age-all battle is back between my daughter and myself regarding white lights vs. rainbow lights, haha! We take turns deciding what setting it would be for the lights.

The quilt, called Tree Farm, is my original design, featured in American Patchwork & Quilting December 2022 issue. I am told that the red and white in the pattern diagrams are switched. So, beware if you want to make yours exactly like mine. If not, yours will look just as beautiful, but with the colors switched for the 9-patch blocks.

***

Have you had your seams shift on you? It’s like after you sew the seam, you realize it is not exactly straight. You see how toward the end of the seam, the seam allowance is narrower? My two cents regarding this situation is:

Always double-check your seam allowance. There is NO SHAME re-sewing if it’s not exactly at 1/4″. In this situation, I don’t even take out the stitches. I just re-sew. If you take the time to make sure your seam is accurately sewn, you will be happier with your blocks/quilts – especially where tiny units are involved!

Now that I have shared my 2-cents for the week, it’s now your turn.

Thank you for stopping by! I wish you a most lovely Christmas season!

I have a confession – last time I told you I couldn’t stop making the blocks. I actually got so excited seeing the completed blocks come together, and actually already finished the top.

The top is being quilted as we speak. Here is a screenshot of the texts exchanged between my quilter Darlene and myself yesterday.

Today’s assignment is to make the tails of the bow units – and then you will be able to sew all the units to complete your blocks! As I said, it’s VERY exciting!

Tips & Thoughts for today’s units:

#1. The tips I shared last week in making the bow loops and having all the points come out right still work. Be sure to read last week’s tips if you haven’t.

#2. Again, when working with small units – be patient and slow, cut accurately, and press with a dry iron!

#3. Also, for the tail units, I found that pressing the fabrics in the opposite directions for those two identical stripe units used in the tail unit helped cut down the bulk.

And that’s it for today. Happy sewing, and let’s meet again on 12/1 for our final part. I think (hope) I will have the completed quilt to show you! This Little Light is going down as one of the favorite projects I have made in 2022, and I have made close to 40?! this year alone.

HERE ARE MY MONTH 2 BLOCKS

A FEW THOUGHTS

1. The reason I included more pinwheel units in Month 2 is for practice. Last month, we made large pinwheels, and this month, we are making the pinwheels smaller. Over the years, I find that making the same unit over and over again, while paying close attention to what works and what doesn’t for me, helps make me achieve more accurate piecing.

2. Some commented on my straight seams. I like to finger press my seams in the desired direction FIRST before using a hot dry iron to set my seams. I find that my fingers get a better feel where the seam line actually is when I flip the fabric to the right side instead of the plate on the iron. Give it a try if you haven’t, and let me know if your seams turn up straighter. :)

That’s it for Color Dance BOM Month 2. I will see you again on December 17 to work on Month 3 blocks.

Have a great week!

Hello Friends, it’s looking like it’s another busy week, but I am not complaining!

FIRST OF ALL – thank you to those of you who have purchased the #crockpotweekend sewalong kits from Fort Worth Fabrics Studio. Jodie is a lovely lady! We had missed each other at Quilt Market a few years ago, and we always talk about having to meet up for coffee when we are both at Market again! Click HERE if you missed my announcement post on the #crockpotweekend sewalong. Click HERE if you want to purchase the kit from Jodie. I thought the kit is priced very reasonably. I have purchased from Jodie in the past, and always appreciated her prompt and very professional (yet personal) service!

***

And I totally BLUE it this week — because I am joining in the #SimplyStarsQAL, hosted by Fat Quarter Shop. This quilt along looks to be another one that is of low demand, and it uses only 1/2 yard cuts. CLICK HERE TO READ ABOUT IT. Tomorrow is when I share my first blocks on Instagram. So, be sure to check out just how badly I blue it. [VERY LAME JOKE alert!]

Of course, you have seen my blues. I actually started collecting English blue pieces when I was in college. I never was into clothes, or anything else — except British transferware when I was in college.

So, if you decide to sew along, and want to use the blues I am using, HERE is the link for the fabrics. And of course, for those who are interested in my blue thread collection, you can read all about it HERE. HERE is the link to purchase the threads from Fat Quarter Shop.

***

I am happy to announce the winner of last week’s destash opportunity is Charlotte Betts. An email will be sent to you, Charlotte. Thank you all for offering to help me destash. I didn’t have time to get ready for another de-stash opportunity. But please be sure there will be one in the near future.

***

And for this week’s 2-cents: I know when piecing a quilt, one doesn’t normally do back stitches. Over the recent years, I started back-stitching just a little bit when I piece the outer border strips, and when I attach the outer border strips to the quilt center. That way, the stitches don’t come un-done when the quilt top is being handled. I have had experience where the stitches come off, and it’s annoying to have to go back to the machine and secure those stitches.

That’s my 2-cents. It’s your turn to share yours.

Announcing the #CROCKPOTWEEKEND Sewalong

FOLLOW ME @ivory_spring ON INSTAGRAM IF YOU HAVEN’T. Instagram is where I best interact with quilters, and where I share the latest news!

***

Hello Friends, I hope you had a good weekend. It was quite nippy and windy here! Some of you who know me know that I am not exactly crazy about cooking. I’d always rather clean than cook. So in the last few years I have started making one-pot meals, or dump meals with my crockpot.

SO – I hope you will save the dates Jan 27-29, 2023. We are going to have a virtucal #Crockpot Weekend Sewalong!

My sewalongs are NEVER demanding. So, during the weekend of Jan 27-29, we will just be make a simple quilt with a charm pack and background fabric using P&B Textiles’ Au Naturel fabric line. Click HERE to see this charming neutral line. This is TRULY a pretty line, especially if you like small prints like I do. Take a look at that cream dandelion fabric – that is such a beautiful fabric to be used as a background fabric, isn’t it?

We will be making this quilt. This quilt finishes at 36″ x 36″ – perfect for a baby quilt, car quilt, a small throw quilt, or even a wheel chair lap quilt. Materials list follows. Note: Fabric A includes binding.

CHECK WITH YOUR LOCAL QUILT SHOPS NOW TO SEE IF THEY ARE CARRYING THE KITS! I will see about posting the list of shops that carry the kits here soon!

You may preorder the kits from Fort Worth Fabrics Studio HERE!

Coming off the holidays, I thought it might be fun to kick off another year of quilting adventures with an easy quilt that you can make either for yourself, or a quilt you can save as a gift for someone in 2023.

So, we will get our meals made with our crockpot so that we can sit down and sew through the weekend. And we will only spend a couple of hours a day during that weekend to sew. I know that’s all I can do because I usually clean on Saturdays! :-)

Friday (Jan 27): Evening – we will start making the HST units.

Saturday (Jan 28): We will finish making and trimming HST units, and start to put sew the rows together.

Sunday (Jan 29): Completing quilt top

See how non-demanding this sewalong is? I imagine some of you might even be able to quilt and bind the quilt!

What is fun is that I will be checking in with you with regular updates on my blog, as well as Instagram stories, through the weekend!

SO — between now and first of Jan, please send me links of your favorite crock pot recipes! I will try them out, and share 5 of my favorites to get ready for the sewalong! I will be making them that weekend to feed my crew so I can sew. :-)

I hope you will join me for the sewalong! I hope this has been of some interest to you… and with that, I wish you a lovely week ahead!

Pattern & Kits

I am using Moda’s Poinsettia Plaza fabrics to make my quilt.

Click HERE or HERE to purchase the kit, or if you want to take a better look at the fabrics.

Click HERE if you want to purchase just the pattern from my Etsy shop.

Today’s assignment is to make the bow unit, as shown below. So you will make steps 1-12 on pages 3-4.

If extra care is taken at a few spots during piecing, this unit will look spectacular! I have circled the spots below. Read on beyond that for my tips.

Tips & Thoughts on working with today’s units:

#1. These are small pieces – be sure your cutting is accurate! A little inaccuracy is a huge deal when handling small pieces.

#2. Be sure to sew slowly, and piece accurately as well.

#3. I piece my seams open. And when I pin my pieces together where a diagonal seam meets with another seam, I pull back the top piece at 1/4″ to make sure that when I sew at 1/4″ seam allowance, the seams will indeed meet up nicely. Then I stick a very fine pin at where the seams meet. I leave the pin in when sewing over the pin — I take this step VERY slowly, and actually just use the hand wheel on my machine to get the machine needle to glide over the pin so I don’t accidently sew on the pin!

And that’s it for today. Let’s meet again on 11/19 for the next part!
