Experience: The Dean Hotel

Every time our country comes out of a recession working class cities embrace a renaissance. Local artists and rising stars transform these cities into cultural mainstays; we saw it in Richmond, Alpine, and now Providence. The Dean Hotel in Providence seems to be at the forefront of this New England capital’s rise to a cultural center.

The Dean Hotel is the epitome of a hip boutique hotel; Le Labo candles, neon signs lighting the hallways, a vintage elevator system, greenery in modern white pots…. the in-room amenities include boxed water, small batch tonic, and Harry’s shave kits and the bathroom is decked out in Waterwork brass furnishings, black tiles, and soft white linens.

Located in the heart of the city, The Dean Hotel is walking distance to the largest mall in the region, the convention center, hockey stadium, local shops, public transportation, and a slew of other amenities that make it the perfect mainstay for your visit. Or, if you’re more into the “never want to step outside” route, The Dean has a coffee shop (Bolt Coffee Co. – we recommend the passion fruit or the earl grey donuts!), Restaurant (Faust), bumping Karaoke Bar (The Boombox) and a speakeasy bar called the Magdalanea Room – perfect for an intimate cocktail with your lover of choice.

Stripes + Silk Bomber

Weekends are for casual wear. I’ve been upgrading my wardrobe basics lately and this Everlane top is a cozy favorite. Taking a nod from the “Franco-files” I paired my stripes with a silk printed bomber, high waisted jeans, and casual sneakers to get me feeling bright and fun and ready to take on the weekend!

Gone to Market

A little throwback post here guys; I told myself I wouldn’t let my blog become infiltrated by “wedding” posts and I think I’ve done a fair job of that so far. That being said, consider this lovely set from our engagement shoot just another outfit post among the rest.

This was the final look of our engagement shoot (going backwards here – the rest will come soon!), shot at one of our favorite little markets in DC, Union Market. We’ve been shopping here since they opened, when we were young(er) and lived a mere 3 blocks away. Four years later and we still love popping in for some afternoon shopping at Salt and Sundry or Righteous Cheese and then grabbing a drink at the outdoor bar, Suburbia. While Union Market hasn’t always been so popping it’s been made insta-famous by the murals that were put up about two years ago. Couples and singles alike have flocked to the Northeast walls for their photo op, and many have done their engagement shots here (which we had not known prior but hey, great minds think alike).

White Valentine

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, guys! Whether you’re single and looking for a date, or in a relationship you’re bound to have some sort of festive gathering or date night out. I’ve teamed up with SheIn to bring you some outfit options to inspire based off of different dates that I love for the festive celebration!

This white out look is fun and trendy.  It shows that you’re not afraid to go against the grain and be yourself – perfect for a Valentine’s date at a cocktail lounge, whether your date is a blind date set up by a well-intentioned friend or your lover of a unspecified time frame. Pair it with a fun pink lip (red is too on the nose for Valentine’s day IMHO) and get ready to let loose!

Iceland Travel Diary

Hoth, it looks like Hoth. The fictional land of ice and snow from a galaxy far far away feels all too real as you step out of Keflavik Airport and into Iceland’s December air. We follow our paths to our rented Toyota Rav 4 (we rented through Arctic.is) and piled in before our weary legs freeze and drive the 45 minutes into downtown Reykjavik, arriving to our apartments just before snow begins to fall. The blanket covering the city for Christmas Eve is a welcome sight for travelers hoping for a white Christmas, ourselves included, so we ditch the warm apartments for wandering downtown among the closing shops and enjoying what little daylight we have left (roughly 3-4 hours of sunlight in December).

Christmas in Iceland can be such a magical time what with the constant snow, the local folklore of the 13 YuleLads, and the general wintery ambiance. Though many shops are closed from Christmas Eve until December 27th, if you have good weather and a proper car you can still manage to see some sights and enjoy your trip. With only a few roads open during the winter months you’ll still be able to see the Golden Circle (a 3-4 hour roundtrip drive from Reykjavik), the Blue Lagoon, and most places along the Ring Road (the national highway of Iceland) if you are staying more than a long weekend.

Traveling with our family we knew we wanted a more leisurely experience so after the 27th we drove north to the second largest town of Akureyri. Our Arctic Rentals car was, thankfully, a 4×4 Diesel SUV which greatly came in handy along the stormy, windy drives on the winding thin 1 Hringvegur (“ringroad”, the only highway in Iceland that circumnavigates the entire country). After driving north we relaxed along the bay before sightseeing.

We explored Godafoss waterfall, Myvatn Lake, Myvatn lake’s lava fields, mud flats and geysirs, and other beautiful scenery. After running around in the freezing cold all day it was finally time to indulge in what everyone goes to Iceland for – hot springs! We had heard that the Blue Lagoon was “just for toursits” and with intense and impure water. We did our research and were excited to check out the Myvatn Nature baths instead and boy was it ahhhh-mazing. 100 degree water while the air is below 30 degrees, taking in the landscape of far off volcanoes and snow capped mountains was the perfect way to end our day with a sunset and a soak.

After our long day of sight seeing it was back on the winding roads headed back down south to end our trip; short but oh so sweet. It’s a beautiful country, and though it was cold and windy and full of storms I cannot wait to get back….except maybe next time in spring or summer!

Stay tuned for a few follow up posts jam packed full of information! In the meantime, I hope these images evoked some wanderlust in you!

Monthly Musings Vol. 9

iPhone wallpaper #iPhone wallpaper #xmasWallpaper:

I cannot believe we’ve made it to the end of the year! I don’t even know what to say. December is always such a reflective time for me; it’s the end of the year, my birthday, Z’s birthday, holidays. 2016 has been a beautiful year for me; We started it in New Orleans and Texas and have ended the year in Iceland. We’ve celebrated 100 years of National Parks, WE GOT ENGAGED.

And now, we welcome in 2017. Man, it’s going to be one HECK of a year. I’m excited for the styles that are to come, and to continue honing my own personal style, growing my blog and social media, and taking on new consulting clients and brands to work with. I’m excited to travel a little bit, to locations old and new, starting with another trip to Providence in January, Charleston in February, and home to NYC in March! Our wedding will be in the fall and then our honeymoon will be amazing, I can already tell; Two adventurous souls taking on new cultures.

  1. Pixie Market is a DREAM and these picks are the perfect post-holiday pick-me-up.
  2. Guys, we’re getting older. Some of us are on the wrong side of 30 and the rest of us are inching towards it. This guide from TheEveryGirl gives advice on what to expect.
  3. Sarah Paulson’s career advice will keep you grounded and inspired. We are still so young.
  4. Make 2017 the year you shop consciously with this list of sustainable brands
  5. Guys I’m literally dying over this Buzzfeed list of 100 funny pictures.
  6. A map of each state’s favorite make-up you say? It’s pretty on point and so interesting to see where the brands stack up.

Wishlisting wears: (1) I’ve always loved the Gucci Animalier collection, but this wallet might actually need to be mine. (2) Valentine’s Day is next month and I’m already considering this dress as the perfect red and cream date-night piece. (3) That dress paired with these floral embroidered boots would make the perfect edgy look! (4) Winter is just beginning but this ruffled sweater, only $40, would keep me happy and warm all season long.

Counting Down to 2017

2016 – what. a. year.

We saw many personal highs, like getting engaged, getting new jobs/promotions, expanding our circle of friends. Traveling the National Parks for their centennial celebration, horseback riding in Texas, oggling the Grand Canyon, and freezing our limbs off in Iceland (which we’re still currently doing).

We encountered numerous national lows; the tragic deaths of David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince, George Michael, Carrie Fisher…just to name a few. We watched our government go from the first black president and a wonderful family into the hands of a womanizer and his team of racists. We’ve watched terrorism thrive across the world as tensions rise among harrowed immigrants fleeing horrendous situations. We saw animals die for causes and learned how compassionate the world can be when rallying together (looking at you, Harambe Memes).

With all that has happened I am ready to put 2016 behind me and start looking forward to 2017. While scary things are afoot for our country’s economy and government, there are plenty of positives to focus on — our wedding, our honeymoon, our monthly travels we have planned (first up: Providence, Charleston, and New York City!) and mapping out the rest of our lives together. Here’s hoping for a fabulous and sparkling 2017 for us all.

Holiday Glitz

Glam holiday dressing with DC Blogger Que Sera Sahra
Christmas is upon us! And with it comes the Holiday parties and any excuse to dress up. This year it’s all about the pleated metallic skirt.

Last year’s season for our annual holiday cards we did something a little different. After a photo shoot with photographer Mark Chen in an abandoned mansion we decided to don some festive wear and get some shots in. The end result is here! I’m in love with the photos; unexpected and cool. I chose the dress because it was slightly festive with shimmering green, but also because it reminds me so much of the omnipresent AW Gucci ads’ green pleated skirt.

Favorite Position: CEO

You know when a movie just has exceptional styling? And you spend hours trying to figure out where everything is from, why it’s styled so well, who styled it, how to get similar pieces?

That was me after watching The Intern. Anne Hathaway’s character is a total Boss (even if she has some character flaws, but I won’t ruin the ending) and is always a perfect mix of classic and casual. Almost every scene showed her in wide leg, high waisted silk trousers. So you know what I did? I spent the next two weeks buying every pair of high waisted silk trousers in my size from local thrift stores. I’m not even kidding I got about 6 pairs. Mind you, I work in a very casual office so these weren’t even necessary but who cares? I’m ready to start embracing the modern CEO look! Now, I just need to start a bomb a** company and make the moolah. In the interim, here’s a fun but classic corporate look to inspire all you fellow worker bee’s to step it up in the office!

Over The River and Through The Woods

The holidays are such a lovely time; I wish we could embrace the smell of fir, the complimentary colors of the season, the fun of shopping for custom gifts for all the special people in your life. I love shopping for my loved ones so much that I actually begin shopping in the summer, burrowing away trinkets and gifts like a squirrel before hibernation.
