On April 19th 1989, a white woman was raped, beaten and left for dead in NYC’s Central Park.  It was known as the Central Park Jogger case.  Five teenage boys - aged 14-16 yrs old – all unknown to each other, all Black/Brown, all from Harlem - were arrested, charged and convicted of attempted murder, rape & assault.  They were Raymond Santana, Anton McCray, Yusef Salaam, Kevin Richardson, and Kharey Wise.

In May 2010, a 16-year-old Bronx teen, Kalief Browder was arrested on suspicion of stealing a backpack. He spent 3 years at Riker's Island - more than half that time in solitary confinement - without ever being convicted.  He was beaten, starved and tortured, tried to committ suicide 4 times, before his release in May 2013; shortly thereafter, the charges against him were dropped.
