Dragon Cotterill: To be blunt, yes you can make solar panels... and batteries. But they will cost more to make and generate/store less than you'd expect. The world's manufacturers have got this sorted and spent way more than you can imagine on research and development. Just work out what you can afford and buy from a reliable company. You'll end up saving money in the long run.

DIY OFF THE GRID AZ: im sorry for the rant

Greg Hoke: Liked it and forwarded it to my brother who is shopping for land. Those "gotchas" won through hard experience sound like experience talking to me. I got the following: 1) Potable water is affordable and can be transported if you own a truck. A creek would only be required if you plan to raise cattle. 2) Access to wood is essential if you want to avoid buying lots of propane for heating. 3) Size your solar system wisely. Use efficient appliances and lots of batteries. A back up charger will be required to top off the batteries. Balancing the cost of extra battery storage versus paying for fuel to charge the batteries sounds like a challenge. Best of luck to you and thanks!

Edward Thompson: Good Job. You may want to tell people that communication with the outside world is also a nice thing to have. For emergencies. A truck and the gas to run it is absolutely necessary. for water, and hauling. Living "off grid" Does not mean living with out contact with, or working with the outside world.

Living off Grid Things that save time and money

Since we now have our well we have chosen to convert one of the three water stores to a store/drying room. We intend to store our canned goods, garden vegetables, cheeses and cured meats here. Today we got the door on. It is an internal door that someone gave us. Kev is going to face it with palette wood.
