Still standing after 300 years...

What would it feel like to stand still all your life? To see the world only through a single window, a single aperture? To not be able to run away, ever, but to stay put come-what-may?

To be the home of millions of creatures? To give shade and sustenance to everyone that passes by, unable to ever follow them? To dance with the seasons and the weather for centuries?

What would it feel like to be a tree?

If I were a man!

"One morning she woke up with an extra thing!" This is the byline for the new French comedy "If I were a man!"
If you think French cinema is still about the experimentation of auteurs such as Truffaut, Godard etc, think again!
The cinematic gems that are still being produced in France are definitely swamped by a plethora of "entertainment" films of this genre. It is not just the US: Hollywood's influence is spread far and wide...

Nazi bunkers on the beach

There are still plenty of sobering mementos of WWII lingering in Europe. One of the most telling reminders of how scary it got: hundreds of German-built bunkers on French beaches designed to prevent Allied landfall.

If they had not lost the war, you can easily imagine the Germans strengthening this defensive network to deflect future American incursions. An impenetrable wall of beachfront fire-power to keep the Yanks out of a Nazi-occupied Europe.

Suddenly, today's news for the West seems tame and innocent...

The highest village in Europe

The more digital our lives become, the more tweeted our emotions, the more tindered our love lives, the more we search for authenticity.

The more of us search for authenticity, the more the budget airlines schedule flights to tiny, hard-to-get places, thereby eviscerating precisely the feeling we went there to rediscover.
Santorini, Malta, Saint Tropez, Santa Fe, Phuket used to be the boonies.  Now they are packed with selfie sticks!

Where to go?  I head for the mountains, which are still a safer bet than sun-&-beach destinations.  In this tiny village on the Alps, the highest village in all of Europe, you can still experience the authentic and get a feel of how people lived here centuries ago, on the toughest conditions.

Beautiful and (still) real!

What is your escapist fantasy?

I am always amazed about how different people are when I ask them for their escapist fantasies.
- In the US, I am often shocked by the number of people that tell me "I want to retire next to a golf course", for example.
- In much of southern europe and parts of Asia, I get a lot of "I want to spend more time with my grandchildren".
- And then, there are all those people whose fantasies relate to shopping: "I want a sports car", "I want to inject silicon to parts of my body", "I want a flat on Trump Tower" etc

And yours? What is your escapist fantasy?

Snowmageddon tech: the modern snowshoe

Yes, you can walk on deep snow.
The technology has existed for millennia, though the modern hi-tech snowshoe is better:
- lighter, pivoting, with adjustable heels and a set of retractable "teeth" for steep slopes.

Join me for a demo in 360°!

A medieval village in downtown Paris

Cities, like epidemics, once they start growing rapidly, overcome everything in their way. No one person or entity ever decrees definitively the borders of a city; instead, like an ink stain on paper, cities spread chaotically, sometimes outward and sometimes back inward.
When things get ridiculous, authorities intervene to build ring roads, tunnels, green zones, overpasses and other afterthoughts to manage the chaos.
Once in a while, however, a miracle survives in the middle of all this mess: welcome to the medieval village in the heart of Paris!

Downtown Abbey: French-style

Right in the heart of Paris you can stroll around a real, wonderfully preserved aristocratic mansion.
Two courtyards (one for the horse carriages, the other for enjoying the greenery), statuary, heavy doors, oodles of rooms and hallways and all the "basic necessities" for a ruling class household.
If you fantasized visiting Downton Abbey but prefer French cuisine and a visit to Paris instead, you can now have both for the price of one!

The Anthropocene: America versus Europe

There are no wildernesses left in Western Europe. In that sense, the Anthropocene is about one century ahead in Europe than it is in America, with its vast tracts of protected land and seemingly endless open spaces.

(French people, who get excited when they see a squirrel, don't quite believe me that I went to a California university where mountain lions roamed).

But there is another enormous difference: a lot of European countryside has been populated since at least the Middle Ages, leaving behind spectacular rural infrastructure: canals, terraces, churches, fortifications, castles etc, spread everywhere and now crumbling. This lends European countryside a different charm: though you cannot run into a grizzly in Europe, you can follow an ancient Roman trail through the forest.

Join me in a trek through snowy alpine village path to see what we can uncover...
