Greed Casts a Long Shadow

Famine Memorial by Rowan Gillespie, IFSC, Custom House Quay

Rowan Gillespie's haunting bronze cast memorial to The Great Famine of 1845-49, that claimed a million lives, and made refugees of a further million, is a remarkably powerful work. Since it was unveiled, Dublin's financial centre, the IFSC, has grown alongside it, creating a very obvious juxtaposition of two very different fortunes.

Here, we have the first two figures in the memorial, leading the way in their procession along the quays, towards Dublin's docklands. In the background, you can see the Ulster Bank HQ.
