Blooming in Black & White

I love fireworks. The climbing rockets, bursting into bright, streaming displays of color and light are an irresistible enticement for my photographic efforts.

I decided to try something unusual with this one. The shape of the bursts reminded me of flowers blooming. Rather than emphasize the color, I removed all color to accentuate the shape.

I wasn’t sure I’d like it without the color, but the more I look at it, the more it appeals to me. I really like the firework’s reflection in the water.

These tulips have long past, but their memory lives on in digital form. Long live the tulips!

These tulips were two-toned in color – not your typical red or yellow. Ironically, I thought the unique, contrasting colors made them good candidates for a monochrome treatment.

To me, the detail in the petals are much more interesting in a higher contrast B&W. In fact, I think this would make an impressive, large print. May have to do that.

Angling in a Fog monochrome photography by Bill Pevlor of www.PopsDigital.com

A lone fisherman waits in a fog for the first bite. He’s fishing for salmon or trout in the waters of Lake Michigan from the pier in Algoma, Wisconsin.

This photo was taken in August of 2012. I went to the Algoma, WI harbor to, hopefully, capture a sunrise. When I got there, conditions were foggy. There wasn’t much to see, but I did notice this lone fisherman on the pier. I thought, with the foggy condition, it could make an interesting image, so I took several photos. I never got closer to the subject than you see here.

When I got home, I looked over the results of the morning, picked this photo as the best effort and posted it to my blog.

At the end of march, I received email from a woman interested in this photo, who knew the fisherman in the photograph. She had married into the fisherman’s family shortly after this photo was taken. She was contacting me because the fisherman’s son had stumbled upon this image somewhere on the internet and knew it was his father.

I didn’t know who the fisherman was. I never got close enough to ask so I wondered how the son was so sure. He was positive because, this was his father’s fishing spot – he was always there and, even though it was only a silhouette, the outline was unmistakable.

It turns out I knew the fisherman, too. He was a former Algoma High School classmate of mine, Dale Kintopf. I hadn’t had any contact with Dale in many years, but I remembered him well. He was one of the good guys.

Now, the heart-tugging part. Dale passed away, unexpectedly, last November. My eyes are welling with tears as I write this, thinking about his children experiencing the first Father’s Day…without their father.

I’m thankful I happened to be at the Algoma harbor on a foggy Saturday morning in August…with my camera. I’m glad the family found this image and that it will always serve as a poignant memory of the proud father, loving husband and true friend Dale was to those who knew him.

Let me wrap this up with a quote from Dale’s obituary: “Dale’s greatest joy in life was the time he spent fishing at the pier in Algoma, he took great pride in his catch and he looked forward to deer hunting season every year as well. He enjoyed vacationing with his family and friends. Dale was a loving husband, proud father of his two sons and the way he lived his life will be carried out through them.”

This is an image that dates back a few years. It’s a digitally enhanced version of one of my most popular images – Break of Dawn. It would be my favorite of the two, but I also like the aged look this one receives from the monochrome and textured effects.

Caged Competitor

The season may be over, but this is one baseball player who remains serious about his game.

This is one of my favorites from a recent “senior portrait” shoot. Baseball was an important part of this young man’s high school career so they wanted some photos of him in his uniform.

The basic idea for this shot (ball player looking through the fence) was brought to me by the subject’s parent who saw a similar shot on Pinterest and wanted us to try it. During the shoot, we made a quick trip to a nearby, small town ball field to grab a few shots. I believe the version she showed me was in color but, while I was working on it, I thought a gritty, monochrome style would best suit the players mood.

There are a lot of things that make this a favorite for me. First, the general mood of the shot. You can easily imagine a story behind this image. (In fact, several stories.)

I also like the detail of the ball, glove and uniform. Don’t miss other interesting touches…like the bruises on the player’s elbow (An element that adds to the story), the tufts of grass on the unkempt infield, the way the light poles and the wisps of clouds frame the photo. (I wish I would have thought to throw a bat on the field in the background.)

The one aspect I question… Is the fence too distracting? Of course, it’s important to this scene, but I think it is almost too symmetrical around the facial features. I didn’t try to get it that way, it’s just the stance he took. I think it might seem more natural if the fence didn’t intersect right on the bridge of the nose and chin. If it was just offset a little to one side or another it might seem more natural, less posed. Of course, now I might be just nit-picking. What do you think? (If it didn’t occur to you before I mentioned it, than it is just me the nit-picky perfectionist.)

The sea gulls soar upward as the sun beams stream downward over Lake Michigan and the Kewaunee, WI lighthouse and pier. Since the colors were somewhat muted, I decided to convert this one to a monochrome look.

This is a close-up look at the center of a poppy. The tissue-paper-like texture of the poppy petals make an interesting frame for the flower’s center.

This bloom started as a very bright red. I decided to take a different turn and make it a black and white image.

Beeline (noun) 1. direct, straight course.  2. To move swiftly in a direct, straight course.

One of my “quests” a few summers ago was to capture a bee in flight. They’re small, quick and erratic. Hard to catch in focus. To that point, none of my efforts had come close to what I would deem, “successful.”

The image above is one of the best I’ve managed…and it was by accident. (That happens more than I might like to admit.)

I was taking photos around a flower bed beside our house. While I was changing camera settings, I accidentally pressed the shutter button. A that exact moment, a bee happened to be zipping into the frame…and voilá.

If I were trying for it, I wouldn’t try in black and white, but looking at this, I really like the intensity it creates. The bee – with his straight antennae, trailing legs and blurred wings – looks like he is on a do-or-die mission and will not be denied.
