The London - Penzance railway was routed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the great ship and railroad builder, hugging the Devon coast for a good stretch from the Exe Estuary to the Teignmouth Estuary. A few tunnels cut through the red sandstone cliffs to complete in 1846.

Its fun to be on the train when large waves drown the carriage, and pounding high waves regularly destroy the walls and track during winter storms. In 2014 the route was closed for 6 months, for Cornish Commuters, while they rebuilt the wall and track which had been completely washed away in one place, leaving the track broken and dangling; which could only be worked on at low tide.

"In 1833, Brunel is appointed chief engineer of the Great Western Railway and he starts connecting the South West of England with London. In total, he’ll build 25 railway lines. With this one, he hopes to reduce journey time down to four hours, a full 13 hours quicker than the even the mail coach can achieve. Brunel’s budget is £2 million. He will spend six."
"His design vision is total. No detail is too small. Everything from the lampposts, stations, locomotives, carriages and even the width of the track are re-designed. Brunel wants to bring not just speed, but comfort to the travelling public. By doubling the width of the track, he can do that. But Brunel’s ‘broad gauge’ is a rejection of the gauge advocated by the other great man of rail, George Stephenson. And existing track owners are understandably resistant. And then there are countless landowners who oppose his plans to carve through the countryside."

HIGH TIDE No. 6 ~ Towards Teignmouth
South West Coastal footpath breakwater on an unusually bright blue skies day: alongside Victorian era 'scenic' rail route which hugs the coast. The sea regularly washes away the sea wall and railtrack in winter: so frequently and costly (6 months out of action last year), that they were considering re-routing the track another way. Its one of the best stretches of train ride. Waves break right over the trains in rough weather.
