Alnwick Alley
Actually its not an alley at all but it has that feel to me. This is a view of the breezeway that circles the Alnwick visitor center. Having what was likely a once-in-a-lifetime chance to visit the city I wasn't going to miss the opportunity to capture a number of long-exposure images around the city. I'm glad I rediscovered this one!

I reckon this one has seen better days. Image is tone-blended from 9 exposures captured at 1.0EV stops ranging from 1/1250-second to 1/5-second. All other EXIF correct per exposure.

The Shelby Cafe - Home Cookin' Since 1922
Shelby, North Carolina is a neat little town about 30 miles from where I live. Typically when I drive through Shelby I am on my way to western NC and really haven't spent much time in the area. Last week I found myself in the downtown Shelby area where I noticed this cafe - along with a few other structures - that I thought would make nice documentary photographs. So on Saturday I revisited the site and was blessed with a gorgeous color-filled, partially cloudy sky, glowing neon signs, and a nicely-lit interior. I was very excited to have captured such a colorful scene! But that excitement was squashed about 10 minutes into processing my raw files where I found myself battling a horrific array of various color temps. I knew that was going to be an issue ahead of time but in the past I've been able to selectively process different areas of different color temps to find a suitable common ground for a global balance. Not true here! But thankfully the colorful array lent itself well to a black and white conversion that I am very pleased with!

Keyhole to the Future
I rediscovered this photograph while searching through my collection for images that matched a theme for Keys and Keyholes - an image that dates back to October, 2010 and was shot with my first manual-capable camera, a wee Kodak Z1012is. I like telling the story that when I was shopping for a camera in 2008, I ended up purchasing this particular camera for two reasons: 1) I only had $250 USD to spend and this camera was selling for ~$225. And 2) because it had a lot of neat dials and buttons on it! The largest of the dials was marked with four letters - P, S, A, and M - none of which I had any clue was supposed to mean. But the camera looked cool so I bought it. :)
It didn't take long after trying to figure out this P, S, A, M business that it became clear I had no clue what terms like shutter speed, aperture, and ISO meant. So to remedy that problem in February of 2009 I began participating in a now defunct photography forum at Panoramio and began a journey that now allows me to proudly refer to myself as a photographer! Looking back I had no idea that little camera and the forum discussions I had would completely change my life!

The Curious Little Water Vortex
In November I visited the site of an old mill where the building was long gone but the dam built for the mill still remained. I was walking along the creek bank when I discovered this little vortex in about 12-inches of water and maybe 8 or 10 feet back from the dam. I stood there watching the vortex for several minutes twisting and turning, bending left and bending right and finally I noticed the hole that had developed in the river bed that was channeling the vortex. The edge of the hole is just visible at bottom. Watching the vortex was somewhat mesmerizing and it seemed that it could continue forever.
