The Icelandic highland is covered with thick snow most of the year, for nine months. And during those months not accessible. The snow melts in May and June, and as the wet roads and tracks become dry, the Highland opens as well as everything that was hidden under the snow. Usually in late June and the beginning of July. Most of the roads are rough gravel roads and dirt roads crisscrossed with rivers and creeks. So it is an area for a 4X4 jeep and good 4WD cars because of the roads but not the least because of river crossing that can become very dangerous.

Sometimes on a challenging gravel road, both steep and narrow. Even a gravel road covered with dark fog for miles at the top of a mountain. So it is necessary to plan ahead and look at all of the options along the way.

There are two lighthouses in the small village Garður placed on the south-west tip of the Reykjanes Peninsula. The older lighthouse was built in 1897. The newer one was constructed in 1944. For many decades, the lighthouses have ben a popular spot to visit and to photograph; both among Icelanders and in recent years a popular tourist attraction.

For a long time, many viewed the rivers as a key to progress through the power plants rather than a natural wonder to view and enjoy.Unavoidably many Icelanders looked to the mighty river Jöklu as a logical and natural selection for a power plant. It wasn't until the eighties and nineties that this option became real and the power plant Kárahnúkavirkjun took a step from the drawing board into reality. The decision was hand in hand with the huge aluminum smelter you see right outside of the small fishing village Reyðarfjörður. The aluminum smelter was the customer who purchased the electricity. It was a massive project that changed the path of the river as well as the view of the canyons not to mention the size of the mighty glacial river that became a rather small spring fed river.

One of the natural wonder we encourage people to visit when in Iceland is the basalt column. These can be seen in many places although Stuðlagil is our favorite. We are of the opinion that this is the most beautiful basalt column place on the plane. Stuðlagil canyon in Iceland is a newly discovered natural wonder and is most likely becoming a popular destination. The story behind the canyon and how the basalt column was revealed is quite fascinating. Also, to the story of the Jökuldalur valley throughout the centuries is of great interest and how a new hydroelectric power plant played a part. The most interesting part of the landscape is the variety of basalt column. The formation of the stacks by the river. The small stacks like an altar. The regular formation as well as the irregular formation.

Mælifell is a beautifully shaped mountain placed on in the Highland in Iceland. It is in a middle of a large black sand area behind Mýrdalsjökull, the glacier that houses the sleeping and scary volcano Katla. The altitude of the sand is approximately 600 meters, and Mælifell is about 200 meters, a bit less than 800 meters above sea-line. But despite the fact that the mountain is in the cold highland it is covered with vegetation that makes it unique when standing in the middle of the black sand. Although popular among photographers, not many have photographed the mountain. The reason is probably that the mountain is not readily available; only from mid-July until the beginning of October.

It is rare to find a region, area or place in Iceland covered with trees, and a forest is impossible to find anywhere on the island. Tere are only two to three areas in the whole country that even resemble anything that could be defined as a forest. This is completely different from large areas in Europe and in the US and many other countries where you drive for hours and only see trees on both sides of the road. The two places where you find a fairly large area of trees is Hollormstaðarkógur in the East region and Vaglaskógur in the north region.

Driving in the northeast part of Iceland this summer, from Vopnafjörður to Bakkafjörður we saw this amazing fog crawling in the fjord. It was a bizarre site to watch the fog move into the fjord above the sea, but not entering the land. Obviously nature has its way of doing things, and this only proves that you can encounter many unusual and unexpected phenomenon while traveling in Iceland.

At one point Ólafur apparently offended the woman who immediately cast a spell over him with her magic. As the magic took over his mind, he ran out of the house as fast as he could eastward to a small mountain called Lyklafell, or Key Mountain, where he left his keys to Skálholt. Then he ran through a mountain pass that since has had his name Ólafsskarð. Not being able to stop running because of the spell he continued to run all the way to this creek, Brytalækir, where he was found dead by the stream. And when found the stream was named Brytalækir to honor his fate and run.

For those who are interested in visiting the Highland in Iceland taking a road trip on one of the main highland roads Kjölur or Kjalvegur road is probably the best option. Kjalvegur takes you to many interesting places and also gives you a good idea of what the Highland looks like. It is the highland road that usually opens first and has interesting attractions and natural wonders to view and experience.
