Earth from Space: Pinal Fire, Arizona, USA

In this composite image you can see the Pinal Fire in Arizona, USA, imaged by the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) aboard the Sentinel-2A satellite. The images were taken May 25th, 2017.

The Pinal Fire started on May 6th, 2017, about 6 miles south of Globe, Arizona. It is still ongoing today, but mostly contained. It affected an area of 7,193 acres. More information on the wildfire here:

Clearly visible is the smoke cloud produced by the fire. The image was taken when the sky was slightly clouded, somewhat reducing the details shown and the vibrance of the image. NIR/SWIR highlights in yellow and red are showing areas with possible ongoing or recent fires.

In this composite image you can see the city of Naples, Pompeii, and the Mount Vesuvius volcano in the Campania region, Italy, imaged by the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) aboard the Sentinel-2A satellite. The images were taken April 8th, 2017.

Clearly visible are the city of Naples (https://goo.gl/zeFub2), as well as the ancient city of Pompeii (https://goo.gl/l2peFP), and the Mount Vesuvius stratovolcano (https://goo.gl/9wVuB4). It is especially known for the eruption of AD 79 (https://goo.gl/Y3lFhr), in which cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were destroyed by pyroclastic surges (https://goo.gl/PRWtGb) and the ruins buried under dozens of feet of tephra (https://goo.gl/y0IBIR).

Earth from Space: Southeastern Atlantic Coast of the USA with West Mims Fire burn scar

In this composite image you can see parts of the southeastern Atlantic Coast of the United States of America, imaged by the Advanced Wide-Field Sensor (AWiFS) aboard the Indian Resourcesat-2A satellite. The images were taken May 20th, 2017.

If you look closely you can see the burn scar of the ongoing West Mims Fire (https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/5153/) in the lower left part of the image. The fire in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge (https://goo.gl/n5DNL7) was started by a lightning strike on April 6th, 2017, and as of May 29th, 2017, burned an area of 152,515 acres.

Mars 2020 Rover

In this artist's concept you can see Mars 2020, a new Mars Rover planned to be launched in July or August 2020 aboard an Atlas V 541 rocket (https://goo.gl/uF1QqD) from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

As you can see the Rover shares a lot of its appearance with the Curiosity Mars Rover (https://goo.gl/Gz0ac), and indeed many technical specifications are similar or identical. There will of course be differences in the scientific instruments carried, and the new Mars 2020 Rover will also get a newly designed and more durable set of wheels. You may have seen the deterioration of Curiosity's wheels in an earlier post (https://goo.gl/m6dXe3).

Stormy Jupiter

In this enhanced color image made from data taken by Juno's JunoCam instrument on February 2nd, 2017, you can see a massive counterclockwise rotating storm on Jupiter that appears as a white oval in the gas giant's southern hemisphere (https://goo.gl/a9Vsc).

The image was taken from a distance of about 14,500 kilometers (9,000 miles). It was processed by Björn Jónsson (https://twitter.com/bjorn_jons) from freely available data.

Short Shadow on the Rings of Saturn

In this image, taken by the Cassini spacecraft wide-angle camera in visible light on February 3rd, 2017, you can see the short shadow Saturn is casting on its ring system (https://goo.gl/4t2E5g). Now in May during Saturn's solstice the shadow will extend even less, only as far as the innermost A ring (https://goo.gl/lp2HzY), leaving the middle and outer A ring completely free of the planet's shadow.

Cassini was at a distance of about 760,000 miles (1.2 million kilometers) from Saturn. Image scale is 46 miles (73 kilometers) per pixel.

Asteroid 2014 JO25 Animation

In this short animation created from radar data acquired by NASA's 230-foot-wide (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone (https://goo.gl/NNJy4M), California, on April 19, 2017, you can see asteroid 2014 JO25 (https://goo.gl/3ybmkX).

The distance to the asteroid was about 1.53 million miles (2.47 million kilometers) when the images were acquired.

The asteroid with a dimension of at least 600 meters had its closest approach to Earth on April 19, 2017, with a distance of about 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers) .

The resolution of the radar images is about 25 feet (7.5 meters) per pixel. 154 images were used to create the movie shown.
