Here's a Bobcam view of one of my fave spots up on Donner Summit in California. This was BEFORE the 20+ feet of snow they've gotten at this elevation over the past 2 weeks! Now that I'm home for awhile (had a bit of traveling over the past week and half)... and we have a break in Snowmageddan action, I'll get up there soon and see what it looks like now!

As you can imagine, Bob (my +DJI Phantom 4 quadcopter) has been staying safe 'n snug in his backpack while all the craziness went on. At one point during the first week's storm, winds over the ridgetops were clocked at 176mph! And I think snow totals since it all started around Jan. 7 are knocking on 25 feet or so.

But... gotta run... my snowblower awaits! During the week I was gone we got another 4 feet of snow at our house. On top of the 3-4 feet that were already there. It settles, so it probably only stands at bit under 5 feet now. But you get my drift. (get it... drift? hahah! I'm so dang funny. Looking.)

Ahhhh, mountain life!

Here's to casting long shadows, taking the high road, raising our vision and always, always facing the light.

Happy 2017 everyone... we're off and running!

A River Snows Through It: Truckee, CA

I flew Bob in the snow the other day. I mean active snowstormy goodness! Of course, you can't tell that in this photo so you'll just have to take my word for it. Snow. Flakes. Coming. Down.

This was around dusk during the storm. I found a new (to me) area to photograph on the ground - and it was SO COOL to check it out from above too. I had cameras going at all altitudes! It pretty much rocked.

Light Geometry: Mt. Rose, NV
Bob and I had to head up to 9000' the other day to find snow. Such is our season so far! But find it we did... and I sent him out to see what was over yonder trees and hills.

Drones are fun, no two ways about it!

Bob (my +DJI quadcopter, in case you were wondering) sends warm holiday wishes from the chilly air up there.

"Sunset Over Mt. Rose." It may not seem like it, but this is a scene I'd never be able to see if it weren't for Bob. Trees obscure it from the road... and if you were on a snowmobile, you'd be down in the trees.

After wondering for years what it looked like over top of said trees - I sent Bob up over the tops of them to check it out. I Oooh'd and Aaah'd out loud at what I saw - and at the view with Lake Tahoe in the background. I didn't stay out very long - it was in the low 20's F - but it was SO COOL to check out the sunset from a vantage point I'd only ever dreamed of before!

Bob rocks. Thanks DJI.

Bob's First Snow: Mount Rose, NV
It's a start!! We had a bit of snow (not alot yet, but it's coming)... so I took Bob out yesterday to see how we fared in cold weather flying.

Result: My hands were FREEZING!! Gotta work that part out a bit better. But Bob flew like a champ. I got to lay eyes on an area I'd NEVER get to see otherwise... who knew there was a snowmobile track down there?? I'm a sucker for these straight-down tree shots, so gird your loins for more of those this winter. HeeHee.

Thank you, +DJI... for the opportunity to re-discover my world and open my mind to new possibilities!

One Tahoe Afternoon: Lake Tahoe, NV
Looking back to this summer's day with Bob. It was delightful, sublime. We basked in the warmth of the sun, he showed me his view of things. I was still getting used to not getting vertigo every time he soared really high. Do quadcopters laugh? I think they do.

Soon... you'll be seeing images of all this covered in snow!
Can. Not. Wait!!!

Life with a Quadcopter Called Bob. It's epic.

'O'er Golden Valley": North of Truckee, CA

What I remember most from this day: Bob was way the heck up there maybe a mile away and around 350 feet. The view was gorgeous. Then I heard a red-tailed hawk screech from off in the same direction.

"OH CRAP!" I thought. Where the heck is it?? I looked frantically, but couldn't see it. Is that the territorial screech of bird-with-beak facing of with bird-named-Bob?? GAH!

The last thing I wanted was blood on my props. The thought of a one of those gorgeous creatures getting its feet all chopped up like garlic on a cooking show makes me shudder and want to cry. So I prayed. And kept Bob up high and brought him back my way, since USUALLY when I hear hawks screech like that in our neck of the woods, they're being territorial at hunting elevations; i.e. lower. Maybe 150-200 feet.

Turns out I was right. You can actually see it down below if you look carefully at the photo. He's in front of the trees, to the left of the tire tracks in the grass. I could only see that much later on the video... making it a real sonar-guided nail biter there for a minute.

Adventures with Bob, Episode #42! Hehheh...
