Scale model of the Queensferry Crossing - Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh

The Queensferry Crossing is the new road traffic bridge currently under construction to link the Lothians and Fife across the Firth of Forth. It is the third bridge to cross the estuary alongside the Forth Bridge and the Forth Road Bridge which it's meant to replace.

I can confidently say the real thing looks far less wobbly than this model. ;)

The bridge is due to open on 31 August 2017

Guarding Gladstone's Land - Edinburgh

This golden statuette lives above the sign at the entrance of Gladstone's Land, one of the oldest buildings on Edinburgh's Royal Mile. It has been restored and reconstructed to showcase how a 17th century merchant such as its first owner Thomas Gladstone would have lived.

Dean Castle, Kilmarnock

Another one from the archives, taken in October 2007. Dean Castle is located in the middle of the Dean Castle country park in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. Historically the home of the Boyd family, the castle is now owned by the East Ayrshire council and hosts unique collections of arms and armour. It also has historical ties with figures of Scottish history such as Robert the Bruce and Robbie Burns.

The gardens are also home to a host of animals such as peacocks, pheasants and parakeets.

Sir Walter Scott statue, Royal Mile, Edinburgh

Walter Scott is one of the most celebrated sons of Edinburgh. The large monument dedicated to him in the middle of Princes Street is testament to that.

Although he is mostly known around the world for his literary works such as Ivanhoe, which ushered a new era of historical fiction, he is also credited for rediscovering the honours of the crown of Scotland in 1818, over 100 years after they were put away following the union of the English and Scottish parliaments of 1707.

This statue stands tall in front of St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile.

Scottish actors who have played Marvel / DC characters

I posted about the Scottish comic book hero Saltire a while back and this got me thinking about the number of Scottish actors who have played one or more characters from Marvel and DC movies and television. So this is my list, in no particular order. Feel free to contribute if I've missed out some names:

Marvel Movies and TV
- Brian Cox (William Striker X-Men 2 - X-Men United)
- Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler X-Men 2 - X-Men United)
- James McAvoy (Charles Xavier, X-Men First Class; X-Men Days of Future Past; X-Men Apocalypse)
- Ray Park (Toad, X-Men)
- Karen Gillian (Nebula Guardians of the Galaxy)
- David Tennant (Kilgrave Marvel's Jessica Jones)
- Ian DeCaestecker (Leopold Fitz +Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
- John Hannah (Dr Holden Radcliffe +Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
- David O'Hara (Alistair Fitz +Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)

DC Movies and TV
- David O'Hara (Reggie Payne Gotham)
- Ewan Bremner (Charlie Wonder Woman)

I thought this list would be a little longer when I was putting it together but I'm either forgetting a lot of names or it's not as many as I thought

The Edinburgh ferris wheel in motion

This is also from the archives, taken after new year 2014 as part of one of the Scavenger Hunts I used to do. This shows the wheel, the Star Flyer, back when it was on St Andrew's Square and the shadow of the Scott Monument.

An experiment in long exposure taken on what I recall being a rather cold day.

The statue of Greyfriars Bobby - Edinburgh

Edinburgh is full of places which attract tourists like flies to sticky paper, but Greyfriars Bobby's statue has got to be one of the top 5 spots in the city. And apparently someone decided at one point that rubbing its nose would bring good fortune and as a result the council has to apply fresh coats of paints regularly, not to mention the damage it does to the metalwork in the long term.
