The New Auto Button: Artificial Intelligence Comes To Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
Buried inside of the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic 7.1 update, which was released in December of 2017, is a fascinating little change. In the Lightroom 7.1 update, the old feeble Auto-Tone button has been replaced with a new Auto option.
This new Auto exposure and saturation adjustment feature, which uses Artificial Intelligence, works so much better than its predecessor!
From what I understand, Adobe has built an advanced neural network machine that is capable of learning from gigantic data sets. When this artificial intelligence program is given enough information to sort through it can recognize patterns and then it can teach itself to automate certain tasks.
In our case, Adobe Sensei watched how a group of professional photographers tuned up thousands of images using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and then it began to draw its own conclusions.
When we press the new Auto button now, I believe that Adobe's algorithm says to itself that “this image matches the style of thousands of other images that I have studied." Next, the algorithm says something like "I need to move the sliders in Lightroom's Basic Panel this way" to make this image look more like those for you and that is how we are getting this vastly improved results.

Color Range Mask Controls In Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic
The new Color Range Masking and Luminance Masking tools in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic are a great way to bring more precision to your local adjustments.
Thanks to these new masking tools we can make much more precise changes to our images while working with Lightroom Classic's Adjustment Brush Tool, Radial Filter and Graduated Filter tools.
The Color Range Mask selects areas based on the colors that you sample using a new Color Range Selector tool whereas the Luminance Range Mask selects pixels based on their brightness value.
To use the Color Range Mask, you must first create some type of local change using either the Graduated Filter, the Radial Filter, or the Adjustment Brush tool. Once you have created a local change then you can select Color from the new Range Mask drop-down menu.
Next, use the new eyedropper tool (Color Range Selector) to target the colors that you want this local change to affect. For greater accuracy, click and drag rectangles around the colors that you want to select and / or use the SHIFT key to add up to five sample points.
Finally, adjust the Amount slider to expand or contract the edges of your new mask. Holding down the ALT key while you drag these sliders to see its effect on the selected areas.
Dragging either of these sliders to the right softens the mask and includes more areas. Dragging these sliders to the left contracts your mask and gives it harder edges.
It’s always tempting to drag the Amount / Smoothness sliders all the way down to zero but I warn you that doing so will often create unnatural artifacts and edges in your image. A little spill, a little softness, in our masks is generally a good thing.
The new Color Range Masking and Luminance Masking tools in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic are a great way to bring more precision to your local adjustments.

How To Upgrade To Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic
Installing the new Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic upgrade can be a frustrating experience for current Lightroom users.
First, you need to be sure that you are installing the right program. As of October 2017, there are now two versions of +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom: Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC.
The names are important here. Adobe is rebranding the product that we have come to love over the past decade. What has called Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC or Lightroom v.6 in the past is now called Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic is not the same as the brand new Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC v1.0 program that was also introduced this week. Introducing Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic and Lightroom CC
The time's they are a changing. This morning Adobe is unveiling the latest versions of the Lightroom program that we photographers love.
There is a lot to dig into here but the most important thing to learn right off the bat is that the names have changed.
If you are currently an Adobe Photoshop Lightroom user then the next generation of the product that you know and love is now called Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Classic.
An entirely new program, one that involves cloud-based image and catalog storage, is also being released today with the name Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC.
