Polaroid photos: developing our sisters
I took a moment to confront my own feelings about why the women's movement meant so much to me, and why I feel so frustrated when people with privilege won't raise up their sisters who need their help.

Tuned In To You
This is a glowing review of a human heart. Cindy Dorminy is my friend first. I met her through her daughter, who enrolled in my after-school program. A few years later, Cindy approached me about coaching her through her first novel.
For months, we worked together, learning her characters, teasing out their emotions, their biggest dreams, their most terrible heartaches.
And then, while she was looking for an agent, she wrote this little gem. This precious little jewel of a book.

I've been struggling with hope and despair my whole life. Indeed, it's the human condition, isn't it?
Rebecca Solnit speaks my heart:
"Hope is a gift you don’t have to surrender, a power you don’t have to throw away. And though hope can be an act of defiance, defiance isn’t enough reason to hope. But there are good reasons."

Classic literature kids want to read
My kids read, but they kind of love to read junk. Especially my 7-year-old, who isn't interested if there aren't pictures. So I was tickled when my friends Wendy and Steven wrote Bax Classics - real, classic literature with delightful and engaging illustrations by a former Pixar illustrator!
Bax tells classic stories from a kid's point of view!
They say the goal is "helping kids develop habits of reaching higher on the bookshelves by creating fun and positive associations with “thicker books” and “chewier language."
Chew on Bax! These stories are adorable.

Could I be more humbled by Greg Wilkey? A mentor to young writers, a dear heart and a fierce wit, and a writer with a series of fast, wicked horror for young readers. That's not a genre I've heard a lot about before!
He says, "My stories are fast-paced adventures filled with elements of horror, science fiction, and the paranormal. Forget what you think you know about vampires. Mortimer Drake is the real deal!"

And now for one of my favorites, Rebekah Gleaves Sanderlin. A funny story about her father's grave - and if that sounded crass, you should absolutely read this.
But like all of Rebekah's work, her tender care for her family, comes through at the end and leaves you wrapped in a sweet warmth - after she drags you through pain, hilarity, heartache, and back again.

Wel, this was a real treat. Jo writes so lovingly about the loneliness - and solidarity - of the spouses of members of the military (called Mil Spouses).
And she talks about her family table, a cherished heirloom from her childhood, and relates it back to the inclusiveness we all need right now.
Lovely, heart-warming writing.

What a delight finding Angie Drake's blog! She writes with authenticity and tenderness about being an American expat, but when pressed about her work, said this:
"It started off as a play on our own experience with people from other countries who would repeatedly tell us that we weren't like other Americans. As we explored more of South America, we realized that many on our sister continent also consider themselves American. The name of the blog took on new meaning and I began to realize that none of us are really average and all Americans have a unique story to tell."

A beautiful and aching memory of her father, explored through the lens of finding old photos. Vanessa Hua's writing is lovely, and this particular blog caught my heart and held on to it tightly.
