Balnakeil House

It is believed that building of the original Balnakeil House was begun around 1642 by the Mackays for one of the sons, and it was then altered c. 1744 and extended a few times in the 1800's. Superbly situated on a mound, Balnakeil House may incorporate remains of the bishop's residence but appears to be basically a laird's house of the 17th century. Later it became the residence of the local sheep farming tenant. It lay empty for 30 years before being restored as a holiday let.

Balnakeil Mill

Balnakeil mill is a rare surviving example of an early 19th century water powered threshing mill. The building is located to the immediate South of Balnakeil House and, along with the remains of the Durness Old Parish Church and Burial Ground, contributes greatly to the wider landscape setting of the group as a whole.

Balnakeil Church

The ruined church of Balnakeil stands at the western end of Balnakeil Bay, looking across a long sweep of sand dunes. The present roofless church dates to about 1617. It was rebuilt in 1690, then abandoned to decay in the mid 19th century when a new church was built.

Highland Cattle

This breed originates from the Scottish Highlands. It has characteristic shaggy hair, long forelocks, long horns, and a unique double hair coat (coarse outer layer and wooly inner layer). This coat helps it to easily handle cold and rainy climates.

The Inner Sound is a strait separating the Inner Hebridean islands of Skye, Raasay and South Rona from the Applecross peninsula on the Scottish mainland.
