On Tuesday night, November 1, BMI’s Nashville office was teeming with songwriters and industry notables as BMI presented its 2016 Country Awards Dinner honoring this year’s President’s Award winner Kenny Chesney, as well as Country Songwriter of the Year Ross Copperman, Song of the Year recipients Thomas Rhett and Sean Douglas, and Publisher of the Year Sony/ATV Nashville.
The 64th annual event is the genre’s oldest awards ceremony, and a highlight for the talented scribes on Music Row and beyond who wrote the most performed songs in BMI’s country catalog. It was truly a night to remember with tributes to Chesney by Eric Church, Keith Urban and BMI Icon Dean Dillon. In addition, a true friend to songwriters was recognized: Congressman Doug Collins of Georgia was presented with the BMI Champion Award for his efforts to modernize the laws that protect music creators and ensure they are fairly compensated.
