Tens of thousands of Hong Kongers gathered in Victoria Park on June 4 for a candlelight vigil to commemorate the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, more delicately known in mainland China as the June Fourth Incident. Student-led protests demanding popular involvement in the political process at the time were met with suppression by the government, which killed at least several hundred people in Beijing. Images of unarmed demonstrators facing tanks were seen around the world.
