Since then, it's been demoted to a dwarf planet, but if you're an astrology enthusiast it still can add depth to your birth chart — especially if you're drawn to the darker side of life, or if Pluto (another dwarf planet) plays a significant role in your astrological identity.

In order to find your Eris sign, you'll have to seek out an advanced birth chart reading — or an online generator that allows you to select other planets and asteroids (in addition to the sun, moon, and nine planets) to display. Once you find where Eris is located on your chart, the real reflection can begin. To be sure, if you only have a passing interest in astrology, you might want to skip out on learning about this celestial body, since it's not a major one. But, if you want to explore the edgier parts of your psyche — and believe that astrology is best way to do that — Eris is an excellent place to start.

Named after the Greek goddess of strife and discord, Eris' position in your birth char t indicates how and where in life you express your rebellious side. Certain signs of the Zodiac are known to be more anti-establishment than others (Aquarius and Scorpio leap to mind), but thinking that others aren't rebellious at all is to overlook Eris' influence. After all, everyone has this dwarf planet somewhere in their chart. So, even the most straight-laced Virgo or go-with-the-flow Libra still has some fight in them — let this be a reminder that rebellion comes in many forms.

For example, having Eris in Aries is a pretty straightforward expression. This placement suggests that you resist boldly, loudly, and with abandon. When expressed through the sign of the confrontational Ram, Eris is what urges you to speak out against — and fight to the end — anything that you consider to go against your morals. An Aries Eris can easily be found leading the charge in a protest or breaking a glass ceiling at work.

Then, on the other end of the Eris spectrum, is someone who has this planet placed in a more passive sign, like Cancer. In this sensitive water sign, Eris' influence is expressed much more subtly, to the point that your behavior is more likely to be read as resentment rather than rebellion. Similarly, having Eris in a sign that's preoccupied with the material world (say, Taurus or Capricorn) may contribute to an envious streak. You might be more inclined to compare your successes to others — and act out if you believe you deserve more than what you have.

As you may have guessed by now, learning about your Eris sign might not reveal the most flattering aspects of your personality, but it's still valuable to anyone who trusts astrology to show them the full picture. And, if you really hate what your Eris placement has to say about who you are, don't panic — there are plenty of other planets, asteroids, and points that, taken together, give a more holistic picture of how you shine.

Like what you see? Born on January 15, 2018, at 12:47 a.m. (the time zone remains unclear), this baby girl is the very first earth sign to be born into the Kardashian-Jenner family since their rise to fame. And what an earth sign she is. At the moment of her birth, the sun, moon, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and Pluto were all in Capricorn, forming a powerful stellium in baby Kardashian-West's chart.

In a family of moody water signs (Kris, Caitlyn, Khloé, Rob, and Kendall), flighty air signs (Kim, Kanye, Scott, and North), and the occasional tough-cookie fire sign (Kourtney, Kylie, Mason, Reign, and Saint), this baby's life will be ruled by the sign of discipline, responsibility, and hard work. As someone with a Capricorn stellium in my own birth chart, I can tell her from experience: She's in for a weird time.

If you aren't familiar with the concept of a stellium in astrology, it's simply a concentration of three or more celestial bodies in a single sign. Finding one in your birth chart may indicate the strongest parts of your personality.

In my case, the sun, Mercury, Uranus, and Neptune were all in Capricorn when I was born, and I have those placements to thank for my dry sense of humor, diligent-but-offbeat work ethic, and the value I place on integrity and structure. This concentration of planetary energy makes up a huge part of my personality — and that's with only four bodies in the same sign. With six celestial bodies camped out in the sign of the Goat, Kimye's baby will have an even greater concentration of the same hardline Cap energy.

Having Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn foretells of a life built on steep ambition for this baby, especially as she grows up and enters the workforce. But an ambitious woman with the last name Kardashian isn't that surprising. It's having a Capricorn sun, moon, Mercury, and Venus that will set her apart from her relatives.

This new baby may speak more directly than her water sign aunts — and she'll probably have less of a tolerance for free-wheeling, abstract conversations than her Gemini sister and father.

Due to their closer proximity to Earth, these heavenly bodies have a more noticeable effect on us, ruling over such areas of life as our emotions, communication style, and romantic selves. This new baby may speak more directly than her water sign aunts — and she'll probably have less of a tolerance for free-wheeling, abstract conversations than her Gemini sister and father.

Speaking of Kanye, let's look more closely at how the stars will affect the baby's relationship with her parents. Again, I can speak from experience on this topic. Where Kim is a Libra and Kanye is a Gemini, my mother is a Gemini and my father is an Aquarius. Yes, there are a differences between these pairs, but one very important thing remains consistent: They're all air signs.

What's funny about an air-parent and earth-child combo is that the latter is more interested in rules than the former. Air sign parents are more interested in stoking their children's curiosity and honing their verbal skills than they are in enforcing curfews or upholding familial traditions. Within this dynamic, it isn't unheard of for the child to rebel by adding more structure to their lives.

Case in point: As a Capricorn child, I found great comfort in timing everything I did — literally, with a kitchen timer. I would enforce my own bedtime by setting a timer that told me when I had exactly 10 more minutes to play before getting ready for bed. Then, I'd set another timer to make sure I brushed my teeth for the dentist-recommended two minutes. If my parents weren't going to set a strict nighttime routine, the Goat in me was going to make it happen, goddamnit. Judging by my casual watching of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, this kid is going to have to navigate some personalities to find the structure and order her Capricorn self needs. (It can be done, Baby Kimye!)

None of this is to say that this baby will be a black sheep in the family — the Kardashian-Jenners are too tight knit for an astrological difference to come between them. What's more likely, however, is that she'll find success in ways we haven't seen from her older relatives. But that's just my guess. Only the stars (and probably Ryan Seacrest) know what's in store for Kim and Kanye's little one.

Like what you see? On Monday, big-hearted Jupiter’s meetup with intense Pluto makes powerful inspiration available to those willing to see the bigger, more complicated picture. Broadening your mind can make it easier to make other, more tangible changes. If there’s anything you did not like in your or others’ behavior last week, draw on this energy to switch over to a more positive pattern.

Tuesday’s new moon cleans the slate for the month to come, encouraging fresh goals and new intentions. Any activity you do during a new moon is easier to keep up over the next four weeks. If you’re trying to eat healthier, not take work home, or do more volunteer shifts, put it on your schedule for Tuesday evening. It’s also a great time for launching those New Year’s resolutions — or kicking them up a notch.

On Friday, we finally crawl out from under that heavy Capricorn blanket and celebrate the first Aquarian birthdays. Aquarius is the sign of friendship, weirdness, and humanitarian politics. Let loose Aquarius-style over the weekend by chillaxing with your chosen family, those people who make you feel uniquely you. And if you and your peeps want to change the world, set your sights high and get plotting!

Capricorn
December 22 to January 19

Chin up, Mer-Goat. The end of your birthday season is full of creative energy, giving you the extra boost to make the most of your natural talents. From Monday to Thursday, the moon passes over your sun, bringing your needs and wants into temporary alignment. This passing influence is a super important check-in point. Most likely, you’ll feel energized and clear about what you need to do over the next several weeks to reach your immediate goals. If you feel fatigued instead, take it as a hint about how you’re really feeling beneath your got-to-keep-it-together surface. With Venus in your sign for a few days yet, it’s still a fine time to prioritize relaxation. A well-placed nap or necessary cry can help you rally for the rest of the year’s opportunities and challenges.

Toward the end of the week, money comes into focus as Venus and the sun enter your house of personal resources. Keep your pragmatic reputation by getting your taxes done early while Venus makes counting your piles of gold (kidding!) more fun than it probably should be. Lest anyone should accuse you of being dull, this is also a good weekend for those other earthly indulgences — like a brick oven pizza and wine shared with your bestest friends.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Aquarius
January 20 to February 18

The time around New Year’s is weirdly quiet for you, Water Bearer. So much is happening under the surface that it can feel like nothing is happening at all. In fact, you’ve been in a state of deep preparation for your persona new year. It’s a closing time when projects get finished or put on pause. Given that you’re a boredom-rejecting Aquarius, you’ve likely made a change or two this last year that needed integrating. On a subconscious level, you’re honing in on what this year’s version of yourself cares about most. The ideal intention to set on Tuesday’s new moon is one that gets you closer to your most authentic and up-to-the-moment concerns. A great way to do this is by envisioning the perfect birthday celebration. Even a symbolic birthday party vision that has you blowing noisemakers with Beyoncé and David Bowie will do the trick. The point is to paint a picture in your mind that gets you in touch with what you really want.

Toward the end of the week, Venus enters your sign, making life instantly easier and nicer. Your brainy charm is dialed all the way up for the next several weeks, making it a great time to flirt, date, network, and make friends with the world. Most people like to feel pretty when Venus is in their sign, so treat yourself to your personal version of a makeover (aka whatever ritual makes you smile at your reflection).
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Pisces
February 19 to March 20

You can be the key that unlocks others’ minds this week, if you choose. Your sensitivity to how others are feeling will help you tune into the right time to speak. There’s real space for positive change in your community and in the bigger world right now, but it depends on people seeing and caring about each other. Your natural compassion and gentleness make you the perfect teacher to remind your friends and colleagues how much we human beings all matter to each other.

Friends, ideals, and community have been a key focus for you this month. That focus reaches its peak when Tuesday evening’s new moon asks how you want to begin afresh in this area. Emotions will be flowing around the new moon, with a tendency for people to assume the worst. Protect yourself from the collective anxiety by taking a mental vacation or a walk when things get heated. Your peace comes from inside and is always available when you need it.

Friday, the moon enters your sign, creating calm and release, and giving you a burst of inspired energy. Over the weekend, connect to your Piscean superpowers by gazing at the ocean, reading poetry, writing a song, visiting a sick friend, meditating, or going for a swim.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Aries
March 21 to April 19

At any given moment, a zillion and a half projects want your focused attention, Ram. Leaping from one thing to another keeps your life sparkly and ensures you’re bright-eyed and awake for whatever is in front of you. For the next few days, though, you’ll get more satisfaction from sticking with a single, concrete goal, especially one that lets you go it solo. If you’re a student, this is a research week all the way. Professionally, an ambitious, high-stakes project is worth the risk, since any success is likely to be noticed by the people who sign your paychecks. The sense of pushing beyond your own limits will likely be enough to contain your wandering interests (at least until Thursday), and a dark room of your own can help, too.

On Tuesday night, check in with your reputation, professional and otherwise, to see if you like where you’re headed. Does your Instagram feed fit with the jobs you’re applying for? Are you relating with parents and bosses or with your impulsive inner teenager? Are you making enough time for what you really want to achieve? Set a new intention or goal for the next month, and seal it with an action.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Taurus
April 20 to May 20

Your ruling planet, beautiful Venus, stays tight with the sun this week, keeping the mood calm while helping you take care of what matters. With last week’s interpersonal intensity behind you, take time to think over what you experienced. There’s a lot going in your relationship life, including at least one conflict. Your behavior and intentions might be solid, but it’s worth taking the time to understand the other point of view. Understanding will help you come to a wise conclusion and form an opinion to guide you in the future.

Tuesday's new moon falls in your sector of travel, religion, and education, making that evening a sweet spot for planning an upcoming trip. On a deeper level, the new moon is a pause to consider how you make your life feel meaningful. What activities or habits connect you to this planet and your fellow human beings? Prioritize the good stuff.

On Thursday, Venus leaves Capricorn and enter Aquarius, getting you to go out to more events. Your friends miss you and your Taurean charm is on: You know what to do. There’s even a nice see-and-be-seen vibe in the air, suggesting that anything that is socially pleasurable will be professionally productive, too.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Gemini
May 21 to June 20

People are super interesting — and weird. As a species, we’re not always great at seeing our own motivations, but sometimes we’re geniuses at figuring out what other people are up to. This week, Gemini, get your psychological investigator cap on, because you’re well-positioned to solve some serious mysteries about the humans you know best (including yourself). From Monday to Thursday, you have six planets in your 8th house of sex, secrets, and joint bank accounts, giving you lots of angles to explore. If any money is coming into your life through a parent, investment, or partner — or if it's leaving your life through debt — get nosy about the logistics. Likewise, it’s a super sexy time to find out more about your partner’s desires and turn question-asking into foreplay. Whatever typically taboo area you dig into, you’re likely to turn up results.

On Tuesday evening, set your intentions about money management, intimacy, and any fears you want to face. Your typical versatility will be at its most magical here, so stretch for an exciting change. Your ruling planet, talkative Mercury, mingles with dreamy Neptune throughout the week, heightening your imagination and intuition. More choices open up at the end of the week, as Venus (on Thursday) and the Sun (on Friday), roll into your ninth house of higher education, religion, and adventure. A day trip to a favorite place will prove extra fun this weekend, especially if your crew is along for the ride.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Cancer
June 21 to July 22

The ebb and flow of relationships continues to be a key area this week, Cancer. By Monday evening, when the moon strides into Capricorn’s still-yet-deep waters, you’re pulled toward whatever needs work on a one-on-one level. The moon in Capricorn makes us especially sensitive to where we’ve had enough. Because the feelings are sensitive in self-critical Capricorn and this phase of the moon’s transit tends to activate fears, it’s easy to go overboard and push others away. Fortunately, it also increases patience.

Mid-week, give yourself a self-loving time out to tune into what does need to change. Ask yourself which relationships you’re hauling around like heavy weights. It can be tempting to accept closeness under any conditions, but being used too often as someone’s emotional mop-up kit will leave you sucked dry. Set an intention to try taking the emotional lead in your one-on-one interactions for the next few weeks. You have a talent for setting the mood, so if you choose to make better connections, that’s quite likely to be what you’ll get.

By Thursday, you’ll get the break you’ve earned when the moon glides into chillaxed Aquarius and then into peaceful Pisces. Reward yourself and your loves with a relaxed social activity that brings out your giggles.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Leo
July 23 to August 22

The week starts off with a clashing of wills and ways on Sunday. So long as you’re not attached to the other party going your way, this can be a fun fight that wakes you up to what you really want. Let any insights born of conflict shine like a spotlight onto the beginning of the week, lighting up where to put your energy and where not to bother. (People who ignore the rules you’ve agreed on really aren’t worth the trouble.)

Do any of your day-to-day habits — like hydrating, exercise, or work — feel like a grind? If so, use Tuesday’s new moon to commit to a routine organized by fun. Love your body like you would a sweetie, romancing it with a danceable wake-up ringtone and giving it enough pauses throughout the day to reconnect with what matters to you.

The end of the week brings Venus and then the Sun into your relationship house, making conflicts and electric connections more likely. Drama can be fun, but make sure it’s what you want. And give yourself plenty of time to recharge.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Virgo
August 23 to September 22

The universe is sending you subliminal messages this week, Virgo, and it wants you to prick up your ears. With Mercury, planet of thought, forming a link to dreamy Neptune, logic takes a backseat to intuition. A Virgo-friendly definition of "intuition" is the many pieces of information your body absorbs when your mind is busy writing emails. Your job is to tune into your senses and look underneath any worries. Think back to when your stomach first got upset or what finally loosened the muscle in your back. Guilt can be a powerful blinder, but right now your compassion can help you see beyond it to the person or people on the other side.

Love is all around you if you raise your head to look — and so are the people who love you for being your smart, kind self. Tuesday evening, commit yourself to improving how you give and seek love, and how much of yourself you let be seen.

Toward the end of the week, the pace of life picks up, as sweet Venus and then the Sun enter your house of work, health, and routines. Venus’ influence can make your daily tasks a pleasure, so long as you use your intuition to decide when to act and when to let things develop without interference.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Libra
September 23 to October 22

What beliefs are holding you back financially, Libra? Our incomes may be affected by injustice and other forces beyond our control, but personal efforts make a big difference, too. The stories you tell yourself about money, your power to earn it, and what it’s good for are open for revision right now. Play devil’s advocate with your own narrative, seeing if there’s another side to the story. On the other hand, if you’ve waved off, say, the fact that women in your field get paid less than men, that information may help free you from unfair anger at yourself or criticism of others.

Mid-week, tiny tensions bubble up to the surface as the moon moves through your house of home and family. Wherever you’ve bent over backwards or neglected to take your own side will need to be corrected. Likewise, if you’ve been sleeping on your household responsibilities, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to join in. This can also be a lovely, creative influence, helping you beautify your surroundings and make it a nicer place to be.

The end of the week sees your house of play (yes, it’s a thing) activated by a super social Aquarian Venus and the bold sun. It’s your week to take a similarly irreversible action and transform a dull patch of your life into something brilliant and real. On Tuesday, the new moon passes over Pluto, your ruling planet, waking up buried feelings of jealousy, resentment, rage, and guilt. Everyone will be experiencing this mood, but because of your special relationship with Pluto, you have a gift for finding deep truths where others see only a pile of stuff. Set your new moon intention Tuesday evening by committing to wear whatever truth you’ve discovered on your sleeve for the next several weeks, letting it change how you think and what you say. It’s a good time for making statements you can’t take back and declarations of what you’ve kept quiet about too long.

Toward the end of the week, Venus and the sun’s movement into Aquarius slows life’s pace down enough for you to enjoy being at home. Decompress from the week’s intensity by having a circle of your best people over for delicious eats and interesting gossip, or indulge in a family retreat. Anyone you don’t have to explain yourself to is good company for these lazy days.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Sagittarius
November 22 to December 21

Sometimes brilliant inspiration finds us when we’re clinging to a shipwreck, and sometimes it arrives with so little effort, we might forget to notice it. Dreamtime and down time, when you’re least paying attention, have secrets to whisper to you, Archer. They want to reveal the truth hiding in plain sight, especially in the places where you’ve ignored your own power. What prisons do you inhabit without noticing? This week, you hold the keys to unlock the first set of doors.

One area that may be limiting your freedom more than you realize is your value system. When we run away from what really matters to us or avoid making it tangible, we don’t have resources to draw on when times get hard. I’m talking about money, Sag, but in astrology, money is the same as physical pleasure, good food, solid friendships, any possessions we own, and the core values that become stronger as we grow. There’s a push here to strengthen those value areas. This means feeding your resources so that, when you come home from your adventures, there’s a metaphorical sandwich and smiling friends there to greet you. As we move into Aquarius season at the end of the week, a fun way to do this is by getting out while staying close to home. Treat yourself to a mosey-ing commute, with plenty of stops to chat with your barista, grocery store cashier, and neighbors.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Related Video
n/a.

Like what you see? So how can you figure out Mercury's influence on your life? That depends on your Mercury sign — aka where Mercury is on your birth chart.

Beyond giving you some context into how you talk and think, your Mercury sign can help you identify potential BFFs. Comparing your respective Mercury placements with people may give you a better idea of how you'll get along. If you have Mercury in chatty Gemini, for example, you might mesh well with someone a little quieter, but just as intellectually curious as you are — like someone with Mercury in Virgo. (Although, it should be said, having misaligned Mercury signs is not a good enough excuse to dismiss someone you've just met.)

If you aren't sure what your Mercury sign is, check your birth chart online. You like to get to the point, even if that means ruffling others' mild-mannered sensibilities in the process. This direct approach also affects which subjects you consider taboo. Simply put, there are very few things that are off-limits to you, Ram. You're often the one to point out the elephant in the room or state the hard truth that everyone would rather ignore.
illustrated by Anna Sudit.

Taurus
The Muller

When it comes to thinking and talking, you prefer a slow-and-steady approach, but that doesn't mean you're always left in the conversational dust, Taurus. Rather, you just like to give yourself time to ruminate. And, once you're ready to chat, you prefer to stick to concrete concepts — no one would describe your way of speaking as "flowery" by any stretch — and that, in turn, can make you less amenable to on-the-fly abstract debates.

Gemini
The Whirlwind

Multitasker that you are, Gem, you're ready for any topic of discussion at any time, anywhere, from the weather to international relations, but that doesn't mean you'll stick to one subject for long. You're a talented ice-breaker and won't hesitate to move the conversation along if you grow bored. This can make talking to you a little overwhelming for other signs, but the beauty of conversing with a Gemini is that you never know where your discussion will go.

Cancer
The Sponge

You look, listen, and feel before you speak, Cancer. And when you do pipe up, it's often to express an emotion or share a valuable memory. Often described as shy, people with Mercury in Cancer tend to give others the floor while they stay behind the scenes, absorbing information and, for the most part, keeping it to themselves. You guard your heart and words so closely, dear Crab, that you may struggle to defend your ideas without getting upset.

Leo
The Entertainer

You don't just tell a story, Leo, you put on a show. As a passionate fire sign, you use expressive, illustrative words that get a reaction out of your audience. Sure, you might exaggerate a few details in your dramatization of actual events, but what's the point in sharing something that doesn't please the crowd? One thing to watch out for, if you have this placement, is how you react when someone asks to have the spotlight for a moment — share the stage, Leo.

Virgo
The Processor

Whether you're chatting up a date, your manager, or your landlord, you don't strike up a conversation without an endgame, Virgo. Your naturally curious sign knows the right questions to ask to get the information you need quickly and efficiently — then you usually have half a dozen more follow-up questions to help you put your learnings in context. Where your investigative approach might get you in trouble, however, is when you question your loved ones so much that you start to sound critical.

Libra
The Talk Show Host

You can put anyone at ease with your breezy, low-pressure way of speaking, Libra. But, for all your gifts in keeping a conversation lively and engaging, you don't always go as deep as you could. It might be that your diplomatic sign fears offending the other person, but it's just as likely that you find small talk simply more enjoyable than philosophical discussions. Besides, even if your conversations stick to the surface, your Libran sense of humor is irresistible.

Scorpio
The Interviewer

You like to be control of your conversations, but you also don't like to dominate the discussion. So, the way you find balance is by starting things off with a probing question — then kicking back and absorbing the response. The majority of your communication, dear Scorp, is done without saying a thing. You listen closely and show interest (or lack thereof) in your body language. Your friends don't come to you expecting grand speeches, but they are usually prepared for that one, precise comment from you that inevitably flips their perspective.

Sagittarius
The Professor

Where having the bold sun in Sagittarius makes you an explorer of the outside world, having Mercury in this adventurous sign makes you more inclined to explore different academic subjects — and to expound upon them with your friends. This is not to say you drone on for hours about the last five historical tomes you've read, Archer. There's enough of a showman in you that you can make just about anyone care about whatever subject you've chosen to delve into this week.

Capricorn
The Bricklayer

Methodical, thy name is Capricorn — but that quality can manifest itself in a few different ways. In professional settings, you like to follow a very clear conversational structure (one where you probably don't talk unless asked). But, in more laid back, social environments, your attention to detail shines through in your storytelling. Of course, the drawback here is that, when put on the spot, you may ramble in order to talk your way into your point.

Aquarius
The Scientist

The Aquarian family motto, when expressed through Mercury, might as well be, "But why?" Such is your approach to information, Water Bearer. Simultaneously a skeptic and an eccentric, you don't ask "why" to challenge others — you simply want to trace their ideas all the way back to their origin point. There's no conversational rabbit hole too odd or specific for you, Aquarius — as long as someone is willing to go down it with you.

Pisces
The Poet

You're by no means the chattiest sign in the Zodiac, Pisces, but if someone mentions something that strikes a chord with you — more often than not, it'll have to do with matters of the heart, dreams, or far-off goals — you can talk until you're blue in the face. It's just the process of pulling you out of your internal world that can be a challenge for others. You're a deep thinker, and prefer to keep those reflections to yourself most of the time. It's a rare Pisces who says everything that's on their mind.

Like what you see? You need to know your birthday to find your sun sign, which then determines which horoscope you should read. Then, your birth time and place are required to have your birth chart drawn up. If this is as far as you've gotten in your astrological education, you might think that the only thing that matters about your life is that it started — and everything that comes after it isn't worth charting.

Of course, that is not the case. Another type of astrological chart, known as an inception chart, is specifically meant to help you understand the importance of developments in your life that have nothing to do with your birthday.

An inception chart is actually very similar to a birth chart. But, instead of your birth date, time, and place, it uses the date, time, and place of another life event, most likely one that kicked off a new chapter in your life (you might have an inception chart drawn up for your wedding date or the day you accepted a new job offer, for example). With this info, a professional astrologer can create an inception chart that shows you where the planets were placed in relation to the Wheel of the Zodiac at the moment of this auspicious event.

But, unlike a birth chart, the takeaway isn't that your wedding (or whatever event you're charting) has a Taurus moon. Rather, it's that the moon was in Taurus when you were married, which could foretell a romantic, even sentimental undercurrent in your union. An inception chart is less about bestowing an astrological identity unto a moment in your life and more about showing you the role that the planets may play in the outcome of that event. Or, as astrologer Robert Hand wrote, astrology can help us understand the significance of a new beginning — and inception charts are the perfect tool for that.

So, the planetary placements you observe in an inception chart for the day that you bought your first apartment, for example, can indicate how that decision (and the apartment itself) will fit into your life overall. Since this chart marks an important development in your domestic life, you may want to look for placements in Cancer and the fourth house, both of which are commonly associated with the home and hearth. If you find that Venus is in Cancer, that could suggest you'll find a true sense of comfort and safety in this apartment — and you may live there for a long time.

(Not sure what a "fourth house" is or how exactly planets factor in? Again, you'll most likely need to consult a professional astrologer if you want to draw up an inception chart.)

Of course, no astrological chart will give you a crystal-clear snapshot of the future — but inception charts can give you a better idea of what lies ahead than a general horoscope can. Whether you're looking at your anniversary or the day you got your dog, you're bound to come away from an inception chart reading with a deeper understanding of your life's trajectory.

Like what you see? There are certain holdovers of course: Maybe a lingering project, or an expected dip into your bank account for a big purchase you need. At the same time, success in the new year can usually be attributed to a mix of hard work, good fortune, and being open to possibilities.

So, as you start to plan out the year ahead, you may want to think more deeply about which areas to plot out down to the letter, and where you can give be a little more spontaneous. To help us determine where and how to set our marks, we've enlisted astrologer Mecca Woods to guide us through what each sign can expect in the realm of work and money in 2018.

Woods says money and security will be big theme this year, partly because of major movement among three planets this year: Jupiter, which is associated with abundance, is moving into Scorpio; Uranus, which governs sudden change and radical, unconventional thinking, is entering Taurus; and Saturn, the planet of responsibility and hard work, is currently in Capricorn.

"We're due for a restructuring of sorts in terms of how we think of making money, and spending money," Woods says. "Some of that has already started to take place with the rise of bitcoin and cryptocurrency."

Whether you're ready to take a risk on the markets, or are laying low at work, here's what you can expect for your sign.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? Take a cue from the stars and let your horoscope guide you. 'Scope the rest of your year here.

Capricorn
December 22 to January 19

Last year, Jupiter (the planet of luck and good fortune), spent time hanging out in Libra, the sign that covers Capricorn's career zone. Now that Saturn is back home in this sign, Woods says 2018 is all about change — not only in terms of seeking out new opportunities, but also using new methods to get there.

"This year will be about capitalizing on a reputation they've been building since last year. That may mean establishing new contacts, building their network, and getting opportunities through people they know, instead of directly do things themselves," Woods says. "Capricorns tend to like to do things by themselves, but they are going to have to get help from their friends and rely on others in order to get ahead this year."

Aquarius
January 20 to February 18

Jupiter is also the planet of prosperity, and it is currently hanging out in Aquarians' career zone.

"This could be a time for promotions or getting recognition through their work, whether that's media or winning awards," Woods says. "This is a time for Aquarians to really shine for what they do and get noticed for it."

Pisces
February 19 to March 20

Woods says that Uranus is finally finishing its tenure in Pisces' money zone, which would have led to significant fluctuations of their finances. As Uranus moves into their zone of communication (and into Taurus in May), Pisces who have struggled with money could see their cash flow level out over the next few months.

With that shift of focus, "you might see Pisces start to pursue, or become more interested in careers in communication, whether that’s advertising, writing, or media. It could also signal some going back to school and learning new skills to make themselves more marketable."

Aries
March 21 to April 19

Aries are known to go big, but with Saturn in Capricorn's career zone, Woods says Aries will also need to be focused.

"Saturn is very much the opposite of Jupiter, in the sense that Jupiter makes things fun and opportunities tend to come quickly," she explains. "Saturn is all about building discipline and maturity, and learning how to deal with responsibility and boundaries. So, when Saturn is in your career zone, you tend to have to work a lot harder for the things you get."

As a result, Aries will be tested in terms of their career. They will need to be clear about their goals and ambitions, but also be willing to commit to finishing the things they start. "Saturn really likes it when we dedicate ourselves to the things we want," Woods adds. "This is a time for Aries to dig in and work hard."

Taurus
April 20 to May 20

Taureans are undergoing a self-reinvention phase that will be exponentially influenced by the planets, Woods says. Some of those shifts will be the result of Uranus spending time in Taurus, and others will be the products of a series of eclipses in 2018.

"Eclipses are game-changers that come along in pairs every six months, and cause us to let go of things we don't need," Woods explains. "Taurus, which tends to be a sign that holds onto things for a really long time, will be pushed out of the nest when it comes to their career, and life in general. Think change in terms of starting fresh, and possibly going in a different direction."

Gemini
May 21 to June 20

"Gemini are going to be looking for careers that resonate with them more on an emotional level, as opposed to just going through the motions," Woods says. Being in a figuring-things-out phase will make them more contemplative, even if they don't make any big changes just yet.

Neptune, which has to do with creativity and spiritual and emotional fulfillment, is spending time in Pisces, Gemini's career zone. So even though bombast may not be name of the game for Gems, Woods says they will see be still seeking out ways to be express themselves in their careers, especially people who work in art-related fields.

"Additionally, Saturn is hanging out in their financial zone right now. That will also mean restructuring their relationship to money, and being more mindful of the work they do," she adds. "Sometimes Gemini can spread themselves very thin. "But Uranus is going to leave that zone come May as it moves over Taurus. I think for Cancer, [this year] is going to be about shaking off old energy and going in a very different direction. That could mean seeking out stability, finding their niche, and leaving a lot of that shaky uncertainty or instability behind."

Leo
July 23 to August 22

Leos are in for an exciting year, being blessed with two eclipses — one on January 31st, and another over the summer — as well as motivating change from another planet for several years to come.

"Whenever an eclipse lands in your sign, it's always a turning point," Woods says. "Then, Uranus, the planet of change, is also moving into Leo’s career zone, where it’s going to stay for the next couple of years." Rather than sticking the same old same, she says Leos will be focused on becoming trailblazers or leaders in the field of their choice.

"Because Uranus is all about independence and doing things differently from everyone else, they may [get the urge] to go off and become an entrepreneur or become self-employed, or they may get promoted." "Virgos are really good at helping other people, and getting other people’s lives together. This year, Virgos are going to be asked to be more focused on their own goals and what they want to do."

Those with creative gifts (perhaps writing or music) who have been keeping those talents close, will hear a loud knock on the door from Saturn, she adds, telling them "it's time to buckle down, actually hone your craft, and share it with the rest of the world."

Libra
September 23 to October 22

The upcoming summer eclipse in Cancer will happen in Libras' career zone, which make for plenty of exciting work moments. That event — a solar eclipse — signifies new beginnings, Woods says. "That means there’s the possibility for a new job, getting a raise, getting a step up the ladder, or getting recognition for something they’ve been doing."

As a bonus, Jupiter is also chilling in Libra's money zone, doubling up on their year of work and money fortune.

Scorpio
October 23 to November 21

2018 will be big for Scorpios — who are willing to take (calculated!) risks along the way.

"Jupiter is currently in Scorpio, and whenever Jupiter is in your sign — something that only happens ever 12 years — it brings all the fanfare to your sign. You tend to get a lot of attention, new opportunities, and meet new people," Woods says. "However, Scorpios are going to have to start to get comfortable with change. They [tend to] need to know what’s happening at all times, but with Jupiter present, Scorpios will have to be willing to take a few risks in order to get what they want."

Sagittarius
November 22 to December 21

Saturn is hanging out in Sag's money zone right now, which is a signal for them to be much more mindful about their finances, buckle down, and pay attention to where their money is going.

"Another thing that’s happening is that Uranus is moving into their zone of routines and habits," Woods adds. "This year is a big time for Sagittarians to break old habits around work and money, making sure they have better work schedule they can stick to, that they are getting compensated well for the work they do, and aren’t just giving their talents away."

Related Video
hosted by Lucie Fink.

Like what you see? That is to say, they've made an educated guess as to what my various signs are based on the first impression I give.

"You're something dark — a Scorpio?"
(Nope.)

"You're a Capricorn, there's no question."
(Yes!)

"I see Capricorn for the sun, but the rising is totally different. Pisces, maybe?"
(Exactly!)

The first question that enters my mind is, How can they do that? But the second is, How can I do that?

This kind of guessing game is common among astro fans online, with Reddit discussion threads calling on users to guess each other's signs based on anything from photos to facial expressions to music preferences. There's even a WikiHow article meant to teach readers how to identify astrological traits in others. If you take the time to learn about how the 12 signs of the Zodiac really behave (and go beyond their broad stereotypes), you stand a chance at guessing an acquaintance's sign correctly, too. But are there any tricks that pros use to get it right?

Astrologer Colin Bedell tells Refinery29 that he'll usually pay attention to eye contact. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces), he says, will be deeply focused and fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius) will often hold direct eye contact with him. On the other hand, "air sign [Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius] eyes dart from corner to corner, but they’re data-downloading, so they have to," Bedell says. And finally, earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn) won't always hold his gaze or appear to be listening, but they are — "because earth energy is buried within," he says.

If you take the time to learn about how the 12 signs of the Zodiac really behave (and go beyond their broad stereotypes), you stand a chance at guessing an acquaintance's sign correctly.

Bedell is quick to add that, if you're making your guess based on little more than an assumption or something you've heard about this person, kindly don't. "Let others show you who they are first," he says. "Stay open to undiscovered astrological virtues, too, as opposed to enforcing confirmation bias." So, if you've never gotten along with, say, a Sagittarius, and you meet someone who rubs you the wrong way, you may feel justified in assuming they're a Sagittarius, but that wouldn't be fair to them — or the general population of Sags, for that matter.

As helpful as these tips may be, your ability to identify astrological traits in others depends on your own sign, too. "As a Gemini, I can’t intuit [others'] signs from their body language," Bedell tells us. "But I can get close to their energy from their word choice, sentence structure, spoken rhythm, and their listening practices." In other words, since Geminis are ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, they tend to pay more attention to verbal cues than other signs do.

This logic can be applied to any sign: If you're an action-oriented, Mars-ruled Aries, you're probably better off looking at someone's body language than listening closely to their conversational style. Or, if you're an intuitive and empathetic Pisces, you might have an easier time guessing someone's sign based on how they express their emotions. So think about what your strengths are, and take an approach that works for you.

All of this being said, Bedell doesn't think people should get too caught up in guessing other people's signs. There's no hard-and-fast-rule for how to do it, so it often comes down to having years of study and experience with the Zodiac — and even then you can get it wrong. "It’s all about observing the context of the time and the space to see who’s energy is most appropriate," Bedell says.

But hey, if you meet someone who's texting nonstop and saying "hi" to everyone who passes by, why not ask them if they're an ultra-social Libra? You might just blow their mind.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? The larger astrological moment suggests we are moving swiftly toward a point of great and irreversible change. The stars work in conjunction with our free will. What that change looks like is up to us, whether we #Resist and whether we build toward a non-dystopian future.

This year’s astrology supports shaking off the paralysis and getting down to work. With rigorous Saturn entering its own sign, Capricorn, the U.S. will be deciding whether to keep our leaders or toss ‘em out. Government structures will come into question and each of us will have intense focus for goals that matter. This is the year to sweat like an activist. You feel the wrongness of police violence in your bones. The Bull in you pushes on power until power backs away with its hands up. Your self-protective side keeps you out of too much trouble, and you have a gift for identifying winnable fights. A lot of prisoners and immigrants in detainment centers are looking for pen pals. It might seem like a small kind of activism, but you of all people know what a big difference a friendly note can make.

What you can do now: Connect with a local religious organization, like HIAS (in DC and NYC), to support detainees or an organization like Black and Pink for writing to LGBTQ+ prisoners.
ILLUSTRATED BY VERO ROMERO

Cancer
Cause: hunger

Why: When we are fed, we feel taken care of and loved. You’ve probably known that since you were a little kid. One place the numbers are not adding up lately is in voting districts. This is also a place where your down-to-earth willingness to work can make a substantial difference. That work is often the unsexy labor of getting petitions signed, but the effect — a more perfect voting system — is worth it.

What you can do now: Research fair districting campaigns in your state, like this one in Ohio, and sign yourself up to get signatures.
ILLUSTRATED BY VERO ROMERO

Libra
Cause: LGBTQ+ rights

Why: Your sign has a reputation for being all makeup kits and doodled hearts, but you know the most beautiful thing in the world is justice. Your rational approach works magic on both explaining laws and teaming up to change them.

What you can do now: Apply to volunteer with Lambda Legal, providing legal help or organizing fundraisers in your area.
ILLUSTRATED BY VERO ROMERO

Scorpio
Cause: domestic violence

Why: Your life’s great project is about handling fear and power. You thrive in one-on-one connection, making you the ideal volunteer at a domestic violence shelter or hotline.

What you can do now: Call the domestic violence center in your area or sign up for a local crisis counseling training.
ILLUSTRATED BY VERO ROMERO

Sagittarius
Cause: fighting Islamophobia and anti-Semitism

Why: Human beings belong to a single diverse, inspiring, sometimes terrible family. This gift also means that while the rest of us panic like beheaded land-fowl, you see the potential for positive change via innovation, technology, and collective action. Your insight paired with your ease in groups makes you a natural environmental activist.

What you can do now: Find or start a 350 group in your community to get us on a path toward 100% renewables.
ILLUSTRATED BY VERO ROMERO

Pisces
Cause: homelessness and addiction

Why: What gives life meaning is either invisible or hidden in plain sight. Love has a different meaning in your life than it does to the Beatles or to a car company’s marketing department. Love is one thing with your mom, another with your best friend, and an entirely different animal when figuring out how to treat yourself with love and respect.

This week, our collective project is to look at our relationships and — meta warning! — our relationship to relationships. Something attracted you to these friends, this partner. You’ve chosen them for deep, hard-to-put-into-words reasons. Maybe they reminded you of your family. They made you laugh. You felt seen, calm, or excited in their presence. But friends and lovers can make us feel like crap, too, especially when they bring out the parts of ourselves we haven’t figured out how to live with.

The planets are giving you a bravery booster right now to connect with others more honestly and deeply. If a friend has turned into a frenemy lately, for instance, you can use the celestial encouragement to ask them what’s up. There’s enough love in the air to help you move through a conversation with kindness, leaving the bond stronger and helping you define for yourself what love really means.

Capricorn
December 22 to January 19

You are at the center of the action this week, Cappy. As much as you gripe, this is how you like it — five planets on your plate and a lot of meaty projects in the works. Your biggest project continues to be relationships. The planets are demanding that you get real about the role love and pleasure play in your life. If you’re like most Sea Goats, there’s way too little pleasure and too much emphasis on control and structure in how you relate. Structure is important — any long-term relationship depends on it — but too much can stifle growth and turn warm feelings to ice. Here’s the thing, though: Ice melts. Pull those deep, tender feelings you love to hide up into the sunlight. In practical terms, this means making space in that busyness for a lunch date, a slow walk, or a Yoko Ono-style bed-in. Love is only as much work as you make it and it can be as simple as being present. Communicate with your body until you’re ready to put those feelings into words.

On Thursday, when Mercury, the planet of thought, joins up with your ruling planet, Saturn, talk gets more serious and more important. Take your time choosing the right words. If you do, this is a lovely moment for making a big commitment.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Aquarius
January 20 to February 18

The relationships you’ve ghosted on, the ones you fantasize about, and any connections based on compassion provide transformative experiences this week — if you can get out of your head. It’s a great week, for example, to let the crush who’s infiltrated your dreams know how you feel. You’ll either get shot down — which will free you up to fall for someone new — or turn that dream into reality.

On Thursday, your mind turns to unspoken agreements and there’s a real need to reckon with any situation where you checked out prematurely. Be real about your part, because that’s the stuff you can control. Communication can make a big difference in sorting out weird, anxiety-producing vibes, as well as setting things right.

It’s also a fabulous time to get your brainstorms and insights down on paper and make an action plan for committing to do any of the non-relationship stuff you’ve fantasized about (e.g. a grassroots political effort, a thesis topic, a band you want to start). Remember, Aquarius: Everything good happens when you decide to take the leap.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Pisces
February 19 to March 20

Being a Pisces means listening for a quiet, faraway sound only you can hear. A name for that sound could be "intuition" or "inspiration." It’s a special kind of knowing that can make life feel rich with color and texture. Without that knowing, it can be hard to know what to do next or what’s important. There are long silences when it’s easy to believe the sound is gone forever or that you made it up. Other times, like this week, that sound is loud enough to wake you in the night. Your co-ruler, Jupiter (aka inspiration), meets up with Mars (action) on Sunday, turning the next several days bright and shiny.

This is the kind of energy that wants to do something, using you as its vessel. Specifically, it wants to make the world a better place. If that’s too tall an order, pour your energy into your friends or a group you’re part of. Your Piscean sensitivity to the collective mood makes you a dreamy vision-maker; where do you see your group manifesting its potential? Take the lead and chances are, your peeps will rally, making a bigger impact as a group than any of you could have on your own.

You’ll also have a chance to get emo with your friends this week. Someone who’s hurting or carrying a secret could be healed by your loving acceptance. Take the plunge and bring your friendships to a deeper, truer level.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Aries
March 21 to April 19

Career continues to be your biggest focus this week, with an extra-thick underline on how conflict and sharing fit in with your ambitions. On Monday and Tuesday, address any tensions with a boss, supervisor — or a parent (the original boss) — by starting a conversation. If you tend to leap to conclusions about where others are coming from, this is a good time to practice asking open-ended questions. Create space for understanding in the most concrete way ever, by blocking out twice as much time in your schedule as you think you need for this very adult tête-à-tête. Where relationships are going well, leverage that Monday-Tuesday mojo by committing to a consuming project with a colleague or having a serious heart-to-heart with mom or dad.

On Thursday, Mercury, the mental planet, moves into Capricorn, making for a lot of boring but necessary thought about your immediate plans. We’ll all be in a glass-half-empty frame of mind, so don’t be surprised to hear "no" on any impulsive proposals. The most likely nay-sayers are…drum roll please…bosses and parents. Both will expect you to show up with a thorough plan, bullet points, and a plan B for worst-case scenarios. Instead of getting frustrated, get into champion mode. Take the higher standards as a challenge to out-do yourself with an extra awesome plan of attack. Saturday, Uranus, planet of weirdos, gets activated, making it the weekend for an outing with someone or sones who bring out your inner freak.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Taurus
April 20 to May 20

We relate to ideas and books in a similar way that we do to people, engaging with them to help us understand ourselves better. Just like any relationship, we’re not always on our best behavior in our thinking life. When an idea sounds nice, we can gloss over the real meaning, choosing to hear what we want instead of what’s being said. Other times, we ignore ideas that might force us to question our strongly held beliefs. Early in this week, see if another perspective wants to get your attention. Odds are good that a long, focused look will deepen your understanding in satisfying ways. Another place this effect might show up is in a university classroom or religious space. Either way, this is a chance to build your way up to an important truth.

On Thursday, Mercury, the question-asker, moves into pragmatic Capricorn, prompting you to define what your knowledge is good for. Make headway by doing thorough work and showing your steps. You might also find yourself thinking about future travel. Most people will be more down-to-earth and direct under this influence, making it a solid time to plan a getaway, especially one that gets you closer to what matters most. Saturday’s Uranus-Venus square makes it primetime for a social retreat, especially one with the people who stimulate your brain.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Gemini
May 21 to June 20

Quantity is the spice of life, but not when it keeps your schedule filled with low-quality love. The week kicks off with your mind on your close relationships and a push to make some tough calls. Do you blow off The Talk with boo for a spin around the emotional block with that frenemy whose contact you can never quite delete? Do you speed date or spend your free time shacked up, skin-to-skin and heart-to-heart, with the one you love so much it scares you? Any escape routes you take this week, especially if they involve fudging the truth or avoiding urgent texts, will get you called out and even written off. On the other hand, a little willingness to show up and have the necessary conversations will free you up to have more fun later.

On Thursday, your ruling planet, Mercury, aka the communicator, moves into one-track-minded Capricorn. It’s like someone threw the brakes on, slowing down our interactions so we can really hear what we’re saying and make good decisions. Sometimes, keeping your options open is a decision of its own, driving away the people we’d like to get close to and exciting opportunities that require whole-hearted commitment. Use your inquisitive mind to notice the choices you’re making and where they’ll lead. Be honest, Gem: Does the current plan of action reflect your deepest desires?
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Cancer
June 21 to July 22

What is it about a big red button labelled “DON’T TOUCH” that makes us want to push it? Your intuition has a knack for telling you exactly where other people want to be touched emotionally, which subjects are sensitive, and what will cause a nuclear-level blow-up. The more “DON’T TOUCH” signs your loved one has up this week and the more neglected you feel, the more likely you’ll be to set off a painful explosion. Pushing buttons creates temporary closeness — there’s nothing like a meltdown to get your boo or bestie to realize how much they need you — but the fallout can be a long-term loss of trust.

A more relationship-friendly way to handle this influence is to approach that off-limits area gently. People put up “DON’T TOUCH” signs for all sorts of reasons — they’re scared, they’re ashamed, they’re stressed at work — and often don’t know they’re doing it. (Most non-Cancers are emotional idiots.) You have a gift for helping others feel safe opening up. Doing this while respecting boundaries will lead to a deeper, more lasting intimacy.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Leo
July 23 to August 22

A serious itch wants scratching, Leo, and your to-do list is already a mile long. Suck up all the inspiration you can while Jupiter, planet of big ideas, is dancing with your ruler, the sun. You’ll likely be feeling on top of your game and the boost of confidence should give you some brilliant ideas. Take advantage of the insight to firm up plans for a creative project, send a heart-on-your-sleeve message, or set a course for what you want to accomplish at work. There is a risk of going overboard, especially on Tuesday, when drama and passion are on high. Recruit a no-bullshit friend to give you their two cents before taking an impulsive plunge.

Control issues are likely to surface at work throughout the week. It’s a good time to address any tug-of-wars or favoritism that’s been creating stress. Start by owning your part in the tango, especially where fears about not being seen or being overpowered have made you act like your worst self.

Mercury, planet of communication, enters sober Capricorn on Thursday, making hard conversations socially acceptable. It’s a good time to sign contracts — both literal and figurative — and scrap ones that aren’t working. By the weekend, you’ll be ready to express your wild side. Take yourself to a place that’s sequins-friendly and let ‘er rip!
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Virgo
August 23 to September 22

Your nerdy and devious sides are in perfect harmony this week. Your homework: Geek out with real-world puzzles and have fun doing it. The world’s in a sober frame of mind, making everyone more aware of where they’ve miscalculated and where they need to commit. Your analytical skills can come in handy, if you sidestep your insecurities.

This doesn’t mean you’re off the hook for the week’s relationship madness. In fact, some of the problems that need solving likely involve your dating, creative, or parenting life. If you have kids, find out why your 2-year-old is acting so very terrible before “fixing” the behavior. (Because astrological symbolism is weird, the same applies for a sketchy-acting sweetie or crush — or art project.) Be skeptical of any "yes" that comes too easily; there’s likely more going on beneath the surface. A gentle-yet-precise question can do a lot to bring out hidden feelings and make you feel more seen in your relationships. It’s also a fabulous time for intense, pull-out-the-stops, sexy romance — especially when you take the lead.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Libra
September 23 to October 22

The moon, ruler of feelings, passes through your sign early this week, putting you in perfect balance with yourself. This is a good time for making decisions and changes, as the voices in your head should be doing a better job than usual of collaborating. Whatever you put into motion now will set the tone for the weeks ahead. If you feel extra tired, it’s your emotions’ way of getting your attention; go with it and rest. Most likely, though, you’ll feel intensely energized, ready to get way deep in your key relationships. Sex can lead to powerful breakthroughs, as can an hour-long heart-to-heart.

This is an equally time to connect with your home base, including your family, housemates, and cultural background. We can easily go on auto-pilot in these parts of our lives, being agreeable where we need to stick up for ourselves and manipulative where we forget we have agency. There’s good support right now for noticing these dynamics and improving them. You might not be able to change anyone else, but an adjustment to your own behavior can make being in those relationships way more pleasant.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Scorpio
October 23 to November 21

Intensity, relationships, secrets, and passionate action are a few of the most Scorpionic things life can offer, and they’re all happening this week. Outwardly, you might be as inscrutable as Mona Lisa’s smile, but inwardly, you’re probably steepling your fingers like a very pleased Monty Burns. Not that intimacy, secrets, or the rest of it are bad — it's just that they send the rest of us scrambling for shelter, while you come into your strength.

During the middle of the week especially, while the moon passes over your sun, you’re likely to feel powered up and ready for change. Your relationship to social media and the people you know through online life are a good place to get closer and realer. Any deeper layer you can crack will have a ripple effect throughout the next month. It is important, though, to break through ethically. In other words, step up your own realness game. Manipulation and emotional sleight-of-hand can get quick results, but the aftershocks could be brutal. One of the scariest and most transformative things a human being can do is be totally honest. Make a confession to someone you trust and watch the relationship come alive in a new way.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Sagittarius
November 22 to December 21

Your relationship to objects and money is ready to grow this week. That doesn’t mean you’ll get rich (sorry!), but facing your financial issues could do a lot to improve your stability. Thanks to Marie Kondo, we all now know we should only keep objects that spark joy. This is a good week to visit your closet with a Goodwill donation box — or straight-up trash bag — in hand.

Think bigger, though, Archer: Which of your possessions actively reduce your quality of life? Instead of sparking joy, do they annihilate all hope? Sounds over-the-top, but the fact is most of us haul around literal baggage that has crappy memories attached to it or giant monthly bills. On that same note, what part of your value system have you outgrown? Get real about what matters to you — what sparks that big, vibrant sense of Sagittarian meaning — and make it your obsession this week.

On Friday, the moon enters your sign, bringing insight into the necessary changes and setting your course for the next four weeks. Soak up the happy vibes — or chill if you need it. The weekend is prime for an extra-interesting date, hangout, or art adventure.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Related Video
n/a.

Like what you see? Believe us, stargazers — variety is the spice of life and it's perfectly normal to want to spice things up in your sex life, specifically. It can be tricky to know where to start, though, so why not consult the stars?

Sure, your Zodiac sign isn't the one and only thing that determines your sexual preferences, but it can play a role. In the same way all 12 signs should approach dating differently this year, so, too, should they each find a new thing to try in the boudoir.

Read on for suggestions to make the sex you have in 2018 the best yet. And don't forget to read for your Mars and Venus signs (the former influence your sexual inclinations while the latter indicates your romantic self).

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? But, this year, we challenge you to enjoy the pleasures that accompany slow, tension-mounting foreplay of all kinds. This year, go beyond your go-to positions and find new ways to get even closer to your partner — while getting down. These snuggly positions are a great place to start.
illustrated by Paola Delucca.

Gemini
You should try: getting handsy.

Never underestimate the power of a few fingers, Gem — especially if they have a powerful vibrator attached to them. Allowing your hands to roam will remind you of all the erogenous zones on your partner's body. And continuing to explore them will teach you exactly how they like to be touched.
illustrated by Paola Delucca.

Cancer
You should try: focusing on yourself.

You put others first — that's what makes you the nurturer of the Zodiac. But, there are times when you deserve to come first instead, Cancer (no pun intended). Make time this year to get reacquainted with your own pleasure centers, maybe with a powerful new toy or just your hands. If you'd like your partner to join in on the fun, you could give mutual masturbation a try.
illustrated by Paola Delucca.

Leo
You should try: worshipping your partner — and vice versa.

You're quick to praise those closest to you, Leo, but you like a little in return, too. This year, brush up on your dirty talk to heap the compliments onto your lover while doing the deed — and don't stress if you feel a little awkward. Or, perhaps you've been thinking about learning more about impact play — and how to do it safely and consensually. Whatever's been sparking your interest, it's time to bring it up with your lover. Fielding sexy questions like, "What's your dirtiest fantasy?" is an exciting way for you and your partner to learn more about each other, all while in a low-pressure environment (you can always pass on a question that makes you feel uncomfortable).
illustrated by Paola Delucca.

Capricorn
You should try: birthday sex.

Your ruling planet, the disciplinarian and all around tough guy Saturn, moved into your sign just before the sun set up camp there as well. It's then that you feel the most in your element — at your most confident. You just need to know which strengths your sign possess and figure out how you can benefit.

All 12 signs can be forces to be reckoned with, as long as they have the right tricks in their arsenal. After all, a brazen, self-assured Aries probably won't share the same approach to handle stress as a by-the-books Capricorn. And a lone wolf Pisces would not gain confidence taking a chatty Gemini's advice.

Ahead, discover the simple habit your sign should pick up to feel more confident, whether you're pitching your ideas at work, negotiating with your landlord, or gearing up for a Big Talk with your partner.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? Take a cue from the stars and let your horoscope guide you. 'Scope the rest of your year here.

Aries
Burn some energy.

Let's be real: Aries are often branded as too confident. The trick for you, dear Ram, is to temper your excitement so that you don't go into every single interaction with your metaphorical guns a-blazing. Find an outlet for all that energy your fire sign is so famous for, whether that's a quick visit to the gym or a stroll around the block. Doing something more physical than mental will help you focus your thoughts later.

Taurus
Take your time.

Taureans are at their best when they're allowed to take their time — and boy, can you Bulls enjoy a leisurely pace when you want to. Ideally, you have room in your schedule to prep and pamper yourself before making any major moves. And, if it's within reason, you should ask for that time. Steady-as-they-go Bulls can tend to get huffy if they're rushed, but they rarely speak up to say that a short timeline doesn't actually work for them. Reclaim your time, dear Bull.

Gemini
Talk first.

This probably won't come as a shock, Gem, but you feel right at home — and, therefore, carefree — when you're leading the conversation, most likely talking right off the cuff. This is not to say you should start an important house meeting with a string of word vomit, but you will be more at ease if you can kick things off and set the tone for the discussion. Knowing you, you'll probably lead with an offbeat joke.

Cancer
Call a relative.

Even if you don't see your family on a regular basis, your bonds with them are undeniable, Cancer — and it's more than likely that you really look up to one relative in particular. You won't find a better confidence boost than the one you'll get after giving this special parent, aunt, or family friend a ring. They've known you for years and know just what to say to get you out of your shell (no pun intended).

Leo
Find your power pose.

Although the science behind it is a little shaky, there's something perfectly Leonine about striking a Wonder Woman-inspired stance in front of the mirror before conquering the world. It's true that Leos love to strut, but wouldn't be caught dead looking goofy in any sort of professional setting. So, your best plan of action is to indulge in a little swagger while at home: strike a tough pose, sing your favorite pump-up song, or recite the battle speech from Return of the King — anything that reminds you of the power you possess.

Virgo
Keep as many lists as you see fit.

Other members of the Zodiac love to rag on Virgos for their microscopic attention to detail and meticulous approach to organization, but it's only because of those skills that you're such a shot-caller in the first place. Ignore the haters and make your lists and check them as many times as you wish. Those to-do lists arm you with a sense of purpose that carries you through your day — and crossing off items will feel like earning a badge of honor.

Libra
Get a signature look.

As someone accustomed to flitting from setting to setting (and finding ways to instantly fit in), you understand the importance of a first impression. Sure, that has a lot to do with your quick-witted, Libran charm, but you're perfectly aware that a pair of statement spectacles or a monochromatic uniform helps to make a major impact, too. And you don't have to break the bank or leave your comfort zone — just find an ensemble or look that makes you feel comfortable and you're sure to shine.

Scorpio
Laugh a little.

Left to mull over your own thoughts for too long can send you down a self-serious spiral, Scorp. We can't exactly picture you walking into the boardroom with a spring in your step, but a little levity can be a secret weapon to preparing for your big moment. Ask a friend to tell a joke or scroll through your favorite meme account. Pausing to crack a smile won't just take your mind off the task at hand, but it'll actually relieve some of your stress, too.

Sagittarius
Learn something new.

Given your reputation as the adventurer of the Zodiac, Sag, your bookworm tendencies are often overlooked. But, more than a few Archers like to do their exploring within the pages of an illuminating tome on philosophy or history — and going on such a journey is just the thing you need to calm your nerves. Afterward, you'll feel refreshed and even armed with new pearls of wisdom that you'll doubt love to impart unto others.

Capricorn
Stick with your routines.

A Capricorn under stress is a perplexing thing to behold: Your workhorse instincts will not allow you to quit while tasks remain, but you also hate to deviate from the structure of your daily life. Rather than strive to strike an unattainable balance between these two needs, we urge you to prioritize the latter. A Cap who misses out on their three square meals, eight hours of sleep, or whatever is the cornerstone of your day is a frazzled and self-conscious Cap indeed.

Aquarius
Put it on paper.

The mind of an Aquarius is incredible to behold, if not a little overwhelming. Your wheels are always turning — and you're eager to share your best ideas with others, if only you could sort them out quick enough. It's rare for a Water Bearer to embrace analog methods in this day and age, but your rapid-fire thoughts will be best served (and, later on, expressed) if you put pen to paper and jot them down as them come. Then, you can easily sift through them and hone your point before bringing it before a group.

Pisces
Go for a walk.

Every Pisces can seem like a fortress of solitude unto themselves — and, for the most part, that's how they like it, so find time to be on your own before you have to make an impression. Nothing grounds you more than a bit of alone time, especially one that allows you to get back to nature. Taking a walk in the park will remind you of the big, world that lies beyond your problems, and thus put those issues in perspective.

Like what you see? As much as we aspire to undo all that holiday budget damage by eating out less in January, selecting the prime meal-plan for our particular habits and schedules can be a lost cause. In the four years that have followed, Netflix has become a powerhouse in developing intelligent, experimental, and above all, quality TV. There are the shows we know we already love, like Orange is the New Black and Stranger Things. Netflix also keeps rolling out astonishingly good content, like last year's American Vandal, a parody on the true crime genre set in a high school.

Amid all this, how can you choose which Netflix original show to watch next? Let's approach Netflix binge-watching methodically, using the precise science that is astrology. We've matched up one Netflix original series with each of the twelve zodiac signs. Some shows just exude a certain vibe that aligns with a sign, whereas some shows have characters that are definitely a sign (Kimmy Schmidt is such a Libra).

So, without further ado: Let the stars choose what you click "play" on next.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? The host of the radio show Dear White People, Sam's not afraid of verbalizing her thoughts about the rampant racism that exists in a supposedly "post-racial" campus, especially as a fraternity gears up to throw a blackface party. This blisteringly intelligent show follows the lead-up and aftermath of the party through the eyes of characters like Sam, the people-pleasing aspiring student body president Troy (Brandon P Bell), and the timid journalist Lionel (DeRon Horton). Each character in the show has to embrace their inner Aries: Take charge, and deal with problems frankly and fearlessly.

If you're a Taurus, watch...

The Crown(2016-present)

Those born under the sign of Taurus, the most sensual sign in the zodiac, like nothing more than to bask in life's good stuff. They like to eat delicious feasts, sleep in Egyptian cotton, and lather themselves with lavender-scented lotion. That brings us to The Crown, Netflix’ most expensive series yet. Each scene in The Crown, a show about Queen Elizabeth’s early days on the throne, is downright sumptuous. The show features ornate sets, lush period piece costumes, and, of course, a compelling story. Watching The Crown is pure pleasure – precisely the sort a Taurus craves.

If you're a Gemini, watch...

Chewing Gum(2015-2017)

There are two sides to Tracy Gordon (Michaela Cole). When she's home with her extremely religious mother and sister, she mimics their piety, and represses her desires. Her true yearnings are incompatible with their ideals: Above all, Tracy just wants to have sex. In Chewing Gum, Tracy embarks on a sometimes awkward, always earnest and hilarious journey to kickstart her own awakening. She has help with her best friend from her London affordable housing complex, and her cute neighbor who lives with his nosy mom. Chewing Gum is an intimate, first-person story, in the sense that Tracy speaks to the camera and lets us into both of her personalities.

If you're a Cancer, watch...

Grace and Frankie(2015-present)

After decades of marriage, Grace (Jane Fonda) and Frankie's (Lily Tomlins) husbands tell them the same shocking news: They're leaving their wives — for each other. Grace and Frankie had been lifelong nemeses, and now, they're the only people who can understand the terrible situation they're in. The newly divorced women move into a beach house and develop an amazing friendship. With its downright beautiful homes, emotional storylines, and close-knit family relationships, Grace and Frankie is a show all Cancers will love. It's a domestic story perfect for the most domestic sign.

If you're a Leo, watch...

The Get Down(2016-2017)

With a splash of color saturation, extravagant set design, and random bursting out into song, director Baz Luhrmann turns ordinary stories into myths of epic proportion – which is exactly what he did to the rise of hip-hop in the Netflix show The Get Down. The series, set in the Bronx in the late 1970s, centers on a group of young people who take part in this period of tremendous cultural innovation. As Refinery29's resident TV expert and Leo Ariana Romero put it, The Get Down mirrors the Leo personality: "It's 'look at me' dramatic, but also has such a big heart."

If you're a Virgo, watch...

Narcos(2015-present)

You have to hand it to the individuals who orchestrated Colombia's massive cocaine cartels: They were incredible at designing complex, organized systems. From the precise and structured way he lived his life and ran his business, one would presume Gilberto Rodriguez, leader of the Cali Cartel, was a Virgo (he was actually an Aquarius). Narcos combines fictional narrative with true events to immerse audiences in the dangerous, fascinating drug economy that defined 1980s Colombia and 1980s United States. How long will the carefully designed systems hold up once they're pursued by the American Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)? You'll have to watch to find out.

If you're a Libra, watch...

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt(2015-present)

The 17 years Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) spent trapped in a cult leader's underground bunker didn't harden her heart — in fact, Kimmy might just be the most cheery, resilient character on TV. After being liberated from the bunker, Kimmy moves to New York and catches up on missed experiences. Naturally social, Kimmy soon finds herself surrounded by a makeshift family. She goes to extravagant lengths to please the people in her life, just as Libras are prone to doing. Kimmy is charming, spontaneous, and kind, but above all, she's committed to being a peacekeeper among her friends (and in the larger world). She's the Libra poster child.

If you're a Scorpio, watch...

Marvel's Jessica Jones(2015-present)

After a traumatic incident causes Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) to hang up her superhero costume for good, she opens a detective agency in New York investigating cases of people who have powers like her own. Jessica walks the streets of Manhattan with an impenetrable gaze and a wry sense of humor. She's seen things, and she'll never tell you what. Remind you of any Scorpios you know? This dark, deeply intelligent Marvel show is as much a study in personality and trauma as it is about fantastical abilities and villains.

If you're a Sagittarius, watch...

G.L.O.W.(2017-present)

It's 1980s Los Angeles, and Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) can't get the kind of complex, interesting role she craves. What's an aspiring actress to do? Join the first-ever cast of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, that's what. Ruth and other actresses, stuntwomen, and Olympians all develop exaggerated "characters" that fight each other in choreographed matches. Naturally, G.L.O.W becomes a sensation. Only a Sagittarius could turn unemployment into an opportunity for a great adventure, which is what Ruth does.

If you're a Capricorn, watch...

Mindhunter(2017-present)

Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) holds his work at the F.B.I. above all aspects of his life, something his girlfriend knows all too well. He and his partner, Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), are developing a revolutionary new way of dealing with recurrent murderers — individuals they call "serial killers." Mindhunter is a gripping show about the forefront of behavioral science, but it's also about people who take work very seriously. Capricorns would respect their relentless work ethic and commitment to their end goals.

If you're an Aquarius, watch...

Black Mirror(2011-present)

The fastest way to an Aquarius' heart? That's why Aquariuses will particularly love Black Mirror, an anthology show that envisions how different technological progressions would impact society and interpersonal relationships. Each episode of Black Mirror is a conversation starter. The format of Black Mirror will also appeal to Aquariuses, since they can watch any order they like and not commit to a long binge-watch. Don't worry, Aquariuses— no one's tying you down to anything.

If you're a Pisces, watch...

Lovesick(2014-present)

At the start of this British show, 20-something Dylan (Johnny Flynn) discovers he has chlamydia, and has to go through his list of past hook-ups and deliver the news. Like all Pisces signs, Dylan's favorite hobby is falling in love. He's not good at actually staying in love with anyone, save for his best friend Evie (Antonia Thomas) — who's dating someone else. Lovesick is a rom-com for the modern era, and it's also a spectacular show about friendship. Within twenty minutes, you'll want Dylan and his friends, who all live together in a flat, to adopt you into their friend group.

Like this post? The desire to try something different in your love life can easily rise to the surface at the start of a new year. If you're not the type to make relationship resolutions, or if you've already tried all the dating advice you've gotten from your friends, your romantic self may be better served by consulting the stars.

Every sign of the Zodiac approaches dating differently — and 2018 is on course to be a very different year for all 12, too. So, if you're in a rut, sick of swiping left, or are just curious about what you could be doing differently, trust us: The cosmos has a suggestion or two.

Ahead, we've rounded up love recommendations for every sign. If you don't see your specific romantic situation reflected in your sun sign, check out what the stars have to say for your Venus, moon, or Mars sign — these planetary placements play a major role in your relationships, too.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? Take a cue from the stars and let your horoscope guide you. 'Scope the rest of your year here.

Aries

If you're single
Get a little extra. Aries rarely need an invitation to show off, but this year demands some of your signature swagger: Throw an over-the-top theme party, go out on a weekday, and splurge on an attention-getting ensemble. Breaking out of your already broad comfort zone is sure to lead you toward new and exciting people.

If you're coupled
Talk it out. Dynamic fire sign that you are, Ram, you like to show how you feel through your actions — but clamming up can prevent you from finding an even deeper connection with your partner. This year, make communication your priority and share something with your S.O. you've been holding back.

Taurus

If you're single
Have regular check-ins with your heart. That doesn't have to be as corny as it sounds, skeptical Bull — getting in touch with your emotions can look like journaling, a 5-minute meditation practice, or a restorative bath. It'll serve you to know where you stand with yourself before you charge into a relationship.

If you're coupled
Cultivate stability. Taureans aren't wont to part with their routines for just anyone, and your partner probably knows that. Make it clear that they matter by including them in the rituals that mean the most to you, whether that's your Sunday errands or your regularly scheduled Buffy rewatch.

Gemini

If you're single
Go deep. You flex your small talk muscles on a regular basis, Gem, but when was the last time you let yourself engage in a heated debate or swap lengthy stories from your childhood? Give this conversational approach a try on you next date or just when you're out with friends. Either way, you'll get to show off a new, equally stunning side of your gift for gab.

If you're coupled
Touch base on boundaries. For some Gems, any amount of spark is reason enough to skip straight to an LTR, but this year the stars will urge you to pause before you swap house keys. If they aren't also a Gemini, your partner probably likes things a little more black-and-white than you do, so take an evening to DTR or simply decide whose house is best for sleepovers.

Cancer

If you're single
Be wary of any dating "scene." We don't mean you should clear you cal of any upcoming dates, but consider waiting to meet up with someone who actually piques your interest — and resist the urge to grab a coffee with someone "just 'cause." To nurture is your nature, Crab, but you don't have to make time for everyone.

If you're coupled
Get some space. As fulfilling as you relationship may be, you haven't been making enough time for yourself, Cancer. Find a solo activity that helps you unwind, like reading an engrossing book or finding a new video game (your S.O. can even be in the room with you, doing their own thing, too).

Leo

If you're single
Lead with honesty. Your feelings are rarely far from your sleeve, Leo, and you shouldn't feel obligated to apologize for that. So, the next time you feel the urge to approach someone new or save your energy and just stay in, act on it. Your fiery sign hates compromise — and when it comes to your relationships, you shouldn't have to.

If you're coupled
Enjoy a little PDA. Leos radiate warmth anyway, so don't be afraid to show it. Your partner is no doubt drawn to your passion and will be more than happy to share a smooch in the Starbucks line or take a corny selfie. And for the more private Leos out there, yes, holding hands in the comfort of your own home can totally count as PDA, too.

Virgo

If you're single
Find a change of scenery. You might love your neighborhood haunts, Virgo, but only a fresh setting (and the flipped perspective that comes with it) will do it for you this year. Book a weekend trip or at least use your PTO to explore a new part of your town. Taking a mini-adventure will help you broaden your horizons while keeping your feet firmly planted on sweet Mother Earth.

If you're coupled
Ignore your milestones. Whether you're moving in with your partner, having kids with them, or just getting used to having a partner, period, you've already got your next goal on your mind, Virgo. But that can easily lead you to overlook all that you already have with your S.O. This year, tap the brakes and just enjoy being with them, wherever you may be.

Libra

If you're single
Call the shots. The time to decide is now. You set the dates, send the first texts, and initiate the Big Talks. Anyone who hits you up expecting a wishy-washy, people-pleasing Libra should keep moving, because this is your year of action. Just take a deep breath then hit send.

If you're coupled
Celebrate your differences. Perfect harmony rarely exists outside of the Libran imagination, and it may prove difficult to let go of that ideal image. But you and your S.O. don't have to share the same interests and hobbies to have amazing chemistry. Show that you care about them (even if you scratch your head at their pastimes) by showing up to their next kickball game or kazoo concert.

Scorpio

If you're single
Maintain your connections. You're not exactly a trophy holder in small talk, Scorp, but that doesn't mean you can't network with the best of them. You never know who you may meet (or what opportunities may arise) while mingling as your pal's plus-one.

If you're coupled
Go on an adventure. You and your partner have more than likely shared plenty of personal truths to reach this point, but how many experiences do you have in common? Ignore your lone wolf instincts for once and plan an excursion into the unknown as a pair — you'll still be talking about this trip long after you return.

Sagittarius

If you're single
Keep an open mind. Your curiosity and intrepid spirit makes you the Indiana Jones of the Zodiac, Sag, and your explorer's instincts ought to play a role in your dating life. This year, date against type (if you have one) and break the ice with unconventional questions. Even if you don't end up in an LTR, you'll absolutely end 2018 having learned a thing or two from those you meet.

If you're coupled
Savor the stability. Sags can find it difficult to stay in one place or relationship for very long, but in your relationship lies a sturdy foundation that allows you to chill out when you really want to (yes, even Sags need their down time). Plus, your partner can no doubt keep up with you — and every Archer needs a partner in crime.

Capricorn

If you're single
Focus on your flirting game. Sure, "flirtatious" is hardly the first word that springs to mind when we think "Capricorn," but that doesn't mean you don't have it in you, dear Goat. Your dry wit is magnetic to many. You just have to let it shine once in a while. Leave your furrowed brow and clenched jaw at home and dazzle a few folks who'll be surprised to hear you crack a joke.

If you're coupled
Do something new every week. Your convention-loving sign can and should shake things up this year, even if "shaking things up" simply translates to going out twice a week rather than once. Even small tweaks to your routine will make you look forward to spending time with your S.O. more than you already do.

Aquarius

If you're single
Be a romantic. Your heart is always talking to you, if you'd just stop to listen to it now and then. When does it go pitter-pat and when does its beat remain steady and unchanged? Water Bearers are a cerebral bunch, and you might not even be looking to date someone at the moment, but you'll gain a whole new view of yourself if you give your heart as much time on the mic as your head.

If you're coupled
Get silly. Your inner child is ready to come out and play, Aquarius — and it sure would like your partner to join in on the fun. Build a pillow fort on a rainy day and swap scary stories, or take an art class that lets you get messy. You can be a tad serious when it comes to love, so seek out opportunities to inject your relationship with a little whimsy.

Pisces

If you're single
Resist the urge to fix people. Pisces are undeniably the healers of the Zodiac, but if you take in every bird with a broken wing, you'll just become their go-to nurse (and you'll lose time to spend on yourself). Potential partners shouldn't be projects or lost causes, Pisces. Date someone for what they'll add to your life, not what you'll have to give to them.

If you're coupled
Dream together. Share the subject of your daydreams with your partner — and see how it compares with their own. Do you share visions of picket fences? Have you both been harboring the wish to own a dog? Discussing your wildest fantasies just might prompt a deeper discussion about where you're headed as a couple IRL.

Related Video

Like what you see? This is a normal amount of Mercury retrogrades for a single year, but they all share something very special. Every time it takes a backspin this year, Mercury (aka the planet of communication) will be moving through a fire sign: first Aries, then Leo, and finally Sagittarius. If you aren't super familiar with this astrological element, brace yourselves, stargazers.

Of the four elements of the Zodiac (fire, earth, air, and water), fire, as you might expect, has the most volatile and dynamic influence. Let's look a little closer at those three fire signs: Aries are known for their hardheadedness and combative attitude; Leos are warm, demanding, and passionate; and Sagittarians are an adventurous, boisterous bunch. These signs are not afraid to make their presences known — and their flair for the dramatic will only amplify the drama that tends to accompany Mercury retrogrades. Overall, these retrogrades will have the potential to affect the areas we are the most passionate about, according to astrologer Susan Miller — and thus they may spark more conflict than usual.

Under an average Mercury retrograde, we may fall behind on our to-do lists, lose important items, or go through rough patches with our friends or partner. But this year, you might not just forget about a dinner date you set before the backspin, you might also royally tick off the friend you stood up. Or, your decision to drop a work project at the last minute might lead to harsher repercussions than usual. Translation: The consequences for our mistakes may, at times, seem out of proportion from what we actually did.

Keep in mind that each sign will affect the Mercury retrogrades differently, too. The retrograde in Aries may prompt childish behavior in those who don't get their way, while Leo's retrograde could lead to inflated egos and snobbery, even among the most humble. Mercury's time spent in Sag will likely see spells of bad luck and grand, long-term plans going awry.

Worried for your survival? Here's a tip: Take things slow. Act carefully and conscientiously, admit mistakes when you make them, and get everything in writing. Oh, and at the very least, there's something to look forward to: Mercury will actually scoot from fiery Sagittarius into water sign Scorpio during its third and final retrograde. More accurately, astrologers are generally working from a laptop, poring over a table of planetary positions known as an ephemeris.

This handy tool is essentially a map of the night sky. It's based on astronomical models and calculations of how the planets move, and it displays years' worth of planetary activities as they occur daily. And it's with this information that astrologers make their predictions. Nowadays, ephemerides are usually generated using software, but they're said to have been distributed as early as the 4th century BCE.

You may think that this sounds like some sort of cheat sheet, but that's probably because you haven't spent much time trying to read an ephemeris yourself. Open one up and prepare to be mystified — to actually understand the thing, you'll need to do some math.

That's because an ephemeris doesn't spell out the planets' positions for you. Instead, it lists their placement by degrees on the Wheel of the Zodiac so that astrologers can see where a planet is in relation to each of the 12 signs, plus where it's headed next (you have an ephemeris to thank for any long-term predictions you read in your horoscope).

For example, on January 1, 2018, Uranus was in Aries at 24 degrees. This tells an astrologer that it'll still be a while before this slow-moving outer planet heads into the next sign on the Wheel (Taurus). And until that happens, you can expect old desires for adventure to bubble up, and to feel a bit more combative than normal (such is the influence of this dynamic-yet-mysterious sign-planet combo).

Like we said, though, it's pretty hard to understand an ephemeris if you haven't studied astrology. An accurate astrological reading is the product of years of study and research. Even if your astrologer prefers to use a software program to pull up the exact movements of a specific planet, learning to read an ephemeris — and using it regularly — was absolutely part of their training.

And hey, if you'd still like to think of the horoscope-writing process as far more esoteric than a set of calculations would make it seem, we're sure your astrologer would appreciate the gift of a crystal or two for their desk.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? We are sitting at her kitchen table, drinking Yogi Tea, and looking at my natal chart on her 48-inch monitor. The chart in front of us looks like something the aliens in Arrival might come up with: circular, all-knowing. Angel, my spirit-guide for the next hour and a half, is wearing a silk robe with purposefully mismatched socks and platform slippers, along with drag-style glittering eyeshadow in bright turquoise and hot pink that gives her the appearance of an intergalactic peacock.

Upon the moment of my birth, she explains, the Moon was in Scorpio, which means that I feel emotions very intensely (true), trust no one (very true), and am probably a bit paranoid (okay, also true.) “What makes it even more complicated is that the ruler of your moon is Pluto, and your Pluto conjuncts your moon,” Angel says. “It makes it even more intense.” Hence, why I might have ended up a serial killer, prone to losing myself in paranoid rage or jealousy, were it not for the influence of my sun, which happens to sit at the perfect angle to serve as a “mitigating factor.”

I’m not really sure how any of this works — trine, conjunct, suns and moons and various astral bodies, living in houses, ruled by planets, all with mysterious qualities. It’s all Greek to me — but nonetheless: What a relief to hear that the stars are protecting me from myself.

Since the dawn of time, humans have looked to the sky for guidance — and today is apparently no different. Millennials especially, seem to be flocking to the stars to soothe themselves even as they increasingly eschew organized religion.

A full quarter of Americans now identify as “spiritual but not religious,” according to an analysis of Pew Research Center data from September. Church attendance continues to decline, with millennials being the least traditionally religious of all living generations. The majority of Americans now agree it is not necessary to believe in God to be moral. Meanwhile, the psychic services industry — which includes astrology, as well as tarot-card reading, palmistry, and other metaphysical services — is growing. Between 2011 and 2016 it shot up 2%, according to industry analysis firm IBIS World. If that doesn’t sound like a big jump, think about it like this: It is now worth $2 billion annually, and it was one of the few industries to weather the crash in 2008 with “minimal declines.”

Not only is astrology recession-proof, it proved to be a calming balm for the uniquely turbulent spiritual desert known as 2017. While horoscopes have long been a fun staple in magazines and newspapers, mostly useful just for giggling over, young women are returning astrology to its former glory by placing it at the center of their spiritual lives. “I’ve seen women in their 20s really get into learning their whole charts [this year]: moon signs, rising signs, all of it. I’m really impressed by the high-level cosmic conversations I hear young women having,” says Tali Edut, one-half of the AstroTwins. She adds that the AstroTwins’ website traffic doubled in 2017, suggesting that gas has been thrown on what was a slower burn in previous years.

“The 2016 election was a mindfuck for many people, like how is this actually happening?” Edut says. “But it’s not like this is the only reason. Young people are facing a challenging economy, unaffordable higher education, and the stress of bullying, social media, and an uncertain future about the environmental state of the planet. Astrology and spiritual practices are incredibly grounding in the face of this.”

Astrology and some of these other practices acknowledge that there is sacred feminine energy in the universe.

Cameron, a 20-year-old Leo from Long Island, who declined to use her last name, has thrown herself into the study of her chart this year, thanks in part to (who else?) Donald Trump. Aside from being startling to the spirit all on his own, the President has driven a large wedge between Cameron and her mother, a Scorpio, who supported Trump in 2016.

This was difficult for Cameron to grasp, as her mom has always been her idol, someone who instilled a lot of Cameron’s feminist beliefs. “My mom is a domestic violence survivor, a sexual assault survivor, and so for her to say she doesn't believe that Donald Trump sexually assaults women — to hear her say things like that really was devastating to me because I know what she's been through,” she says. “It was like she was invalidating everything that we'd been through as a family just to support this lunatic.”

Worse still, when the pair would argue about Trump, Cameron noticed her mom would manipulate the truth, stopping at nothing to make her case. It was very cunning, something she’d never noticed about her mom before, because she previously always agreed with her.

None of it made sense to Cameron — until she read her mom’s chart. “She is just such a classic Scorpio,” Cameron says. “And through astrology I’ve also found that, a lot of the gaslighting or manipulation she did to me was inherited through her own childhood. Of course I could figure this out without astrology, but when it’s written right there in her chart and interpreted, it is validating.” This doesn’t mean Cameron is letting her mom off the hook for her support of Trump, but it does help take the edge off the deeply personal, painful aspects here.

Astrology has also helped her realize and reflect on her own faults. “It’s just a way to put some reasoning behind some of my feelings and to give me a way to learn how to cope with certain things that I don't like about myself,” Cameron says.“ I see astrology as just another way for me to be self-aware. It helps me explain why I do certain things, why I act in a certain way, how I am in my relationships with friends, boyfriends, whatever. And meditating on it, helps me feel like I can be better.”

She sees her new interest in astrology as equivalent to other faiths. “I definitely think that I get the same out of astrology that a lot of the people got out of their religions, whether that’s Christian, Muslim, Buddhist,” she says.

This is thanks to what L.A.-based astrologer Chani Nicholas refers to as astrology’s ability to lead to reflection. “We all are in desperate need of being reflective. We all deeply crave a reflection because a reflection kind of unlocks something in us and then it helps us to help to find our agency,” Nicholas says. In other words, astrology may seem frivolous (Cameron definitely could figure out her complex feelings about her mom without it, for example) but just by holding that space for reflection in her life, astrology becomes a powerful coping mechanism.

On top of that craving for reflection, we need connection, adds Nadiya Shah, a Canadian astrologer who has an M.A. in the cultural study of cosmology and divination from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom. As interconnected as we all are now — by a global economy and the internet — these connections are mostly in our heads. They’re not tangible. “The word for this is ‘disembodied.’ Social media is great but the connection isn’t physical,’” Shah says. “Astrology to me is a way to restore a sense of meaning, magic, and order. We feel connected to the physical bodies of the stars, because they’re things we can see. They have spirit. But because they’re real, it’s an affirmation that we exist and our existence isn’t empty.”

Chani Nicholas doesn’t totally buy into the idea that there is some new astrology craze these days. “I feel like it's a little myopic to say that what's going on right now hasn't always been going on. It's just going on in a different way, in a more public way, which may bring more people in, sure.” Nicholas says. “But this is just another of many, many, many times over thousands of years where astrology is finding its way back into mainstream culture.”

And yet, Nicholas is representative of astrology’s latest era of comeback. Nicholas, who has been studying astrology since she got her first reading at age 12, has made a name for herself with her “politically charged and deeply pragmatic” readings, describes Lenny Letter. She’s been profiled by the Los Angeles Times, and featured in Buzzfeed, The Cut, and Nylon. Her horoscopes come out on Mondays, but on any given day, you can find her reading Cardi B’s chart for the listeners of a hip radio show or explaining why the eclipse was bad news for Trump to Paper. More than that, she’s now training a generation of astrologers through affordable classes via her website. (One young woman I spoke with, who had taken her classes, called her “the be-all, end-all” of modern astrology.) Her interpretations are inextricably linked to social justice causes, a link that makes her uniquely suited to read for a generation that’s extremely concerned by the persistence of those nasty human inventions — racism and sexism and ableism and more — and are now looking for ways to live through the Trump Era. “Astrology is just my skill set. Social justice is my passion. So partly it’s just me,” Nicholas says of the way she links her star readings to politics. “But also, astrology is all about commenting on humans and the human experience. It's about our decisions and our movements and all of that. So to me I don’t understand, under what circumstances would your politics not come into your astrology?”

She points to memes and Instagram and Twitter as not just a reason people seek out astrology or spirituality in the first place, but as a new, and very powerful avenue for finding it. “There's never been a public conversation in the same way as there is now about astrology,” she says. “But there's never been a public conversation about feminism or racism or about any of the things that many of us are now much more well versed in, simply because we have access to the information.”

Indeed, “astrology has been a part of every single culture, in every single time frame of humanity. It’s been very integral to humanity for as far back as we know,” Shah adds. Astrology in the West has its roots in Tetrobiblos, an ancient text written in Alexandria by the Greco-Roman mathematician Ptolemy around 100 AD. Ptolemy talked about astronomy as astrology, and vice versa. “During the time Ptolemy lived, this idea that the world is just the world didn’t exist. You couldn’t observe the world without also contemplating the spiritual significance of what it was that you were seeing,” Shah says.

At first, astrology was a precise predictive tool, used to explain the weather and the seasons and to tell exactly when misfortune or luck might visit you and how. After the fall of Rome begat the middle ages, the Arabs took over, translating Greek ideas into Arabic and making way for an understanding of astrology that jived with the concept of a monotheistic God. “When you look at Tetrobiblos, you see a lot of formulas: ‘If the Sun is here and Mars is here, this person is going to have a burn on their hand at 7 years old.’ But the Arabs looked at the sky, and said, ‘If your Sun is here or Mars is here, you might have problems with anger. So it might be good if you temper your anger.’ They put it into a context of a singular God who honored free will,” Shah says.

Over the years since then, astrology has fallen in and out of favor, but always: It survives. It made a huge comeback, along with painting, music, liberal arts, during the Renaissance when the invention of the printing press popularized the practice through the spread of almanacs. Then came The Enlightenment, which gave rise to the idea that spirit is one thing and matter is another. This relegated astrology to unserious mumbo jumbo for the first time in our history, which is interesting considering how recent The Enlightenment was in the grand scheme of things. Nonetheless astrology lived on in the Spiritualism movement of the 19th century, and later still became a feature in New Age psychology circles in the 20th century.

The first astrological newspaper column started in 1930s Britain, written by R.H. Naylor in the Sunday Express, according to Smithsonian Magazine. It wasn’t unheard of for newspapers to hire astrologers to do star charts for famous people, just for fun. Naylor landed a regular column after seeming to predict King Edward the VIII’s abdication in a chart he did for the paper in honor of Princess Margaret’s birth in 1930. Then, in 1937, under pressure from editors to come up with a way to make his ‘scopes appeal to a mass audience, he came up with the idea of only reading the sun sign, which simplified things and birthed untold numbers of copycats.

Angel Eyedealism tells me that the majority of her clients today are millennial women, and this, of course, has everything to do with what’s written in the stars. It’s possible to cast charts for entire generations, entire cultures and nations, she explains. (In fact it’s a major part of astrological history that charts were once read for entire civilizations.) All you need is a time frame to calculate where the stars and planets were in order to glean insight.

Millennials have some key similarities in their natal charts, thanks to certain slow-moving planets. “Neptune stays about 13 years in a sign, so it can influence an entire generation,” Angel says. “Neptune is confusion, delusion, and illusion. Most of your generation has Neptune in Capricorn, which is such a business-like sign. So, your generation sees spirituality as business and business as spiritual.” Many of us also have Uranus, the ruler of astrology and technology, in Capricorn as well (it stays about seven years in a sign). “So for [millennials], it seems like the most practical thing to do is consult an astrologist about business or other practical matters,” Angel says.

Many young women today are also looking to it because it’s a lived faith. It requires routine practice, and that brings a level of mindfulness that is “calming,” says Garlia Cornelia, a 34-year-old mom of two and a playwright in the suburbs of New York. She uses astrology, and the related practice of studying moon cycles in relation to her menstrual cycle, as a way to carve out a space for self-care and planning ahead. “You can plan your time upon your cycle and the stars,” she says. “There are times where you may need more downtime, and there are times where you will more creative and when you pay attention to those cycles, you’ll start to see patterns and learn to listen.”

Shah says this is an example of how astrology is about a deep yearning for a way to link the feminine to the divine. “Astrology and some of these other practices acknowledge that there is sacred feminine energy in the universe. They can be a way of honoring the sacred feminine.” In a world where all the major prophets are men, and where feminine chastity and obedience to the patriarchy are the main things celebrated by traditional religions, it’s obvious why millenial women — maybe the most powerful generation of women ever — are looking to see ourselves in our experiences of the divine.

For Shea McElroy, a 23-year-old Capricorn from Santa Cruz, CA, astrology is less religion than a hugely important tool of self-exploration. She graduated from college this year, and she’s living at home with her parents as she charts (literally) her next step. “Last night, for example, I made an extended journal really mapping out my horoscope this week. It was like, on Monday Saturn was conjunct Mercury and the horoscope says this highlights what obstructs our path,” she says. “And on Tuesday, I had this breakthrough in therapy. It was something about what I really want and what gets in the way of me acting on it the way that I really want to, and I left my session with my therapist giving me a pat on the back saying, ‘You said something insightful and also really heard yourself say it.’ I literally experienced insight about something obstructing my path!”

If that doesn’t make you a believer…. Well, McElroy doesn’t care if you’re a believer, actually. “I don’t think astrology even asks you to believe in it,” she says. In fact, that’s part of the appeal. She realizes she is seeing patterns she wants to see, and that there are limitations to its usefulness. “Astrology just asks you to use it, to look at the present astrology, or your chart, and reflect on it — to take what works and leave the rest.”

This is perhaps the thing that’s most attractive to millennials: It’s all about you. “The practice is very much based on self-trust and self-authority,” Shah says. “It helps us trust ourselves, not a religious authority, but something that is personally meaningful to us.”

Of course, millennials are often derided as “self-obsessed,” but don’t get it twisted: Self-obsessed does not necessarily mean selfish. One also has to remember that millennials have been let down over and over again: We were told we were post-racial and post-feminism; that equality had been reached, and yet we all experience racism and sexism constantly. And when we speak about it online, or attempt to organize for change, we’re derided as “whiners” or “snowflakes” and told to shut up and stop complaining. We were told to work hard and we’d be rewarded, and instead we graduated into a wrecked economy, enormous debt, and an ever-more unstable world. It’s no wonder we want to be able to trust some deep wisdom within ourselves. We can’t trust anyone else.

Then again, this could also just be my personal trust issues talking, my moon in Scorpio pointing it’s paranoid stinger once again. Who knows? We are all just a bunch of complicated people, with conflicting beliefs and mysterious tendencies — we are made out of stardust ourselves, after all — living on this planet, trying to figure out how we’re going to get through another revolution around the sun.

All I can say for certain is that I walked out of my reading with Angel feeling happier, lighter than I’ve felt in ages. It’s not like Angel offered any specific guidance on what I should do to extinguish the current sources of doom in my life — my partner’s student loan debt, the #GOPTaxScam, my job security in the midst of a series of pivots to video, Nazi resurgence, climate change, #MeToo, and so on — but the whole exercise made me feel seen, as though there is something out there to explain why I am the way I am, and what role I’m destined to play in this cosmic farce. That alone is far more comforting than someone telling me to come back down to Planet Earth.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? Cleanses of the juice variety aren't our thing, but we're wholly on board with detoxes of a spiritual nature. And after a year like 2017, everybody (and every sign) under the stars could probably use one of those.

Each sign of the Zodiac is in for a very different 2018, so it stands to reason that all 12 should focus their efforts on cleansing a different part of their lives. Ahead, we've recommended one thing that each sign should seek to let go of this year. If you find that your sign's suggested "cleanse" doesn't quite fit, check the cleanse for your moon and rising signs. Put yourself (and your desires) back in the driver's seat this year by clearing your schedule of tasks that do not serve you and yours, Aries.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Taurus
Let go of all that clutter.

Be it your closet, shoe rack, makeup bag, or chair with an omnipresent pile of tossed items, somewhere in your home has become the dumping ground for accumulated stuff — the majority of which you do not need, Bull. As much as Taureans like to surround themselves with lust-worthy objects, you're still earth sign. You might not be a minimalist like your Capricorn cousins, but you, too, thrive when you have space to grow. No Bull does well when they're fenced in.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Gemini
Let go of your mile-long to-do list.

We get it, Gem — like any air sign worth their salt, you're a multitasker. But, if you aren't too careful, all that activity can stifle another signature trait of your sign: curiosity. Is there time in your daily schedule for the flights of fancy that so often lead you to your best ideas? Gems are often criticized for their aversion to structure, but this year you should ignore what the haters say and give yourself a free day every so often to just be your breezy, energetic self.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Cancer
Let go of your insecurities.

You aren't exactly the risk-taker of the Zodiac, Cancer, but the urge for a major change may be on your horizon this year. The only thing standing the way of your leap of faith is, well, you. Sensitive Crabs don't end up acting on their desires usually because they're too embroiled in considering all the ways their actions could go wrong — or how poorly they may be received. Aim high this year, Cancer. Then let your arrow fly with confidence.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Leo
Let go of toxic friends.

Leos tend to roll deep, but a wide social circle shouldn't come at the expense of your sense of comfort. If members of your posse have failed to show up for you when you've needed them or simply no longer align with your values, it may be time to reconsider your relationship with them, dear Lion. Don't cut someone loose just because you disagree about the Kardashians, but, rather, reflect on the differences you have with your friends that might be, in the end, unreconcilable.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Virgo
Let go of your same old routine.

Stay with us here, Virgo. You needn't cleanse any amount of structure from your life, but you should consider changing things up in order to open yourself up to greater spontaneity. When your life isn't planned down to the most minute details, you get better at thinking on your feet — and what Virgo would turn away an opportunity for self-improvement? Self-sufficient earth sign that you are, throwing out your planner will remind you that you really can rely on nothing but your own know-how.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Libra
Let go of self-denial.

The time to book a spa treatment, start a meditation practice, or simply stay in next Friday is now, Libra. You hate to RSVP "no" to just about anything, but this year, your bevy of fans — and the requests they so often make of you — can wait. Reconnect with yourself with some well-deserved pampering and actual alone time (put the phone away, Libra). Taking the time to recharge will eventually lead to greater perspective about how (and with whom) you should spend your time.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Scorpio
Let go of the needless secrets.

We'd never suggest that an enigmatic Scorpio should air their dirty laundry, but we would recommend you look out for the moments when your instinct is to hold back. Do you hesitate to open up with a new partner? Do you keep your parents at an arm's length? Identify when you are the most secretive and ask yourself: Would you actually benefit from saying a little more in these scenarios? Let more of yourself come to light this year, Scorp.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Sagittarius
Let go of excessive spending.

You probably haven't been splurging much on yourself, Sag, but it's likely you've been more than happy to pick up the second or third rounds (or even the whole tab) for you and your gang. Your generous spirit is one for the books — and you shouldn't stamp it out entirely. That said, it will not serve you to sponsor all of your social circle's exploits. The next time you reach for your wallet, make sure you're spending your money where it counts.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Capricorn
Let go of self-defeat.

You're an ambitious, results- and success-oriented sign who all too often forgets that failure isn't just an option — it can even be a valuable experience. When you do slip up, Cap, the first person you blame is yourself, to the point of total self-defeat. Sometimes problems and mistakes are beyond your control, but you can always decide how you react to them. Clear the negative language from your mental vocabulary, don't dwell on what you can't change, and focus instead on your next step.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Aquarius
Let go of your ego.

Even if you're still waiting to reap your rewards, you've been enjoying a period of luck for some time now, Aquarius. With that comes hard-earned success, recognition, and the challenge not to let those things go to your head. As the public broadcaster of the Zodiac, you're at your best with a rapt audience, but don't spend all that attention on self-promotion. Instead, sing the praises of others, as well, so that you never get too lonely at the top.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Pisces
Let go of the negative Nancys.

In Pisces people we tend to find both excellent listeners and insightful advisors. In other words, who wouldn't want you for a confidante, Pisces? The problem only arises when you ignore your own feelings in order to tend to those of others. It won't be in your interest to be every single person's shoulder to cry on this year, dear Fish. Turn on Do Not Disturb before bed and give any particularly whiny friends a stern talking to. You can still be the "helpful friend" without being an accessory to wallowing.
Illustrated by Abbie Winters.

Like what you see? But not only did Ana make me understand that astrology was about so much more than predicting where you'll meet your next crush, she also had a way of believing in things that would make anyone else believe in them, too. It's really because of her that I know anything about why my moon sign and rising sign matter, or what a retrograde even is.

After college, we remained close, to the point of having keys to each other’s apartments, to the point that when a bartender once asked if we were celebrating anything with our cocktails, she told him that we just hadn’t seen each other in a long time.

"How long?" he had asked.

"Two weeks," she had replied. "That’s a long time for us."

That night was one of the last times I ever saw her.

We were inseparable, until we weren’t — until nearly six years after we met, and about two months after that night at the bar, when she suddenly ghosted sometime in mid-September.

I suppose we fell apart the way people usually do: gradually, and then all at once. After sensing some distance between us before she had cut me off completely, I reached out to her twice, asking if something was going on, if I had done something. Each time, she reassured me that she had just been busy.

"You didn’t do anything wrong," she said. "I’ve just been busy; I’m trying not to spend money, and I need to take care of my mental health."

Given how open and honest we were with each other, I understood, and trusted that she would open up if she ever felt ready, and if not, that was that. I tried not to take it personally, because, hello, not everything is about me. Still, I couldn’t ignore the gnawing sense that something was wrong, and my gut feeling was confirmed when weeks went by and she seemed to still be in touch with other friends, and then weeks later, when she unfollowed me on Instagram, and proceeded to delete all the photos she had ever posted of me and untag herself from any photos I’d ever posted of her.

So, yeah, I guess you could say I took that kind of personally.

To say that I spiraled would probably be an understatement. I tend to base a lot of my identity on how good of a friend I can be to people, and feeling as if I had become toxic to someone I loved triggered my depression in a way that I hadn’t experienced before. It felt like I had said or done something wrong, but I couldn’t figure out what it was, or even try to make up for it or apologize for it. I spent a long time agonizing over what boundaries I could have crossed, what I did or didn’t do or say, and an even longer time thinking of myself in terms of what I lacked or ways in which I was deficient. I felt more lost than when I first arrived in NYC, totally alone.

I spent a long time agonizing over what boundaries I could have crossed, what I did or didn’t do or say, and an even longer time thinking of myself in terms of what I lacked or ways in which I was deficient.

It also didn’t help that ghosting in friendships isn’t something people tend to discuss. If a romantic partner ditches you for seemingly no reason, that's universally recognized as painful, and you have your pick of movies and think pieces that validate your struggles. But when it happens with a friend, things are a little less clear cut.

When I confided in well-meaning people, many of them told me, "Well, you have other friends," or, "I wouldn’t obsess about it."

But I was really struggling, and I needed answers. If I wasn't going to get them from Ana, I had to turn to the only other potential source I could find: my horoscope. And oddly enough, the stars seemed to confirm the turn that my life had taken.

"You may have needed more solitude and support," my AstroTwins horoscope for the month of October read. "There was a sense that a greater energy field was at play and that higher forces DID actually have another plan. For once, your struggles couldn't be solved with force and steely Scorpio resolve."

Chani Nicholas’ horoscope reminded me that "not every problem is yours to solve. Not every solution will make itself known in your lifetime. Not everything needs to be figured out in the way that we think it does."

And, as arbitrary and abstract as it sounds, it was incredible how good it felt to have something, anything, affirm what I was going through.

Personally speaking, I’m not great at processing pain. And it was hard to talk about a close friend ghosting me in a way that didn’t sound stupid or feel trivial. So when my horoscope seemed to reflect what I was going through, it was like a note of assurance from the universe that I wasn’t imagining this pain or overreacting; that yes, things might be especially difficult right now, but that maybe they wouldn’t remain that difficult for long. It was a reminder that there was a bigger picture at play.

Through reading my horoscopes, I was finally able to see that I may not get definitive answers ever — but that that's okay. After all, the very nature of being ghosted is that you don’t get the answers to why someone left you. I could, and have, spent ages guessing what I did wrong, what caused things to go down the way they did, but I probably won’t ever know for sure. So all there was left to do was to find healing on my own.

It’s not lost on me that something Ana brought into my life became something I clung to after she left it. Maybe my mind was reaching for one of the only threads that could still connect me to her, and to our friendship. I can’t imagine that it was easy for her to end our six-year friendship (or at least, I hope it wasn’t). I can’t take back anything that might have made my friend ghost me, but I can keep turning to the source of comfort she brought into my life.

After all, my horoscope this month promises that "pushing past your comfort zones will reveal opportunities or perspectives you'd normally miss." And after accepting the end of my friendship, I'm finally ready to do that again.

*Names have been changed.

Ready to launch into the new year but not sure where to start? Time to skip the same old routine and move on to brighter horizons.

ColourPop Honeymoon Super Shock Highlighter, $5.60, available at ColourPop.

If you're a Libra, try allover eye color.

Hopefully you're ready to be in the spotlight because 2018 is your year for some major attention. And there's nothing more commanding than a monochromatic allover shadow look like this, as seen at Moschino Spring/Summer 2018. Skip the neutrals in favor of some electricity this time around. Angel tells us that since Libra is ruled by Venus, they're totally in their element when wearing hits of color like this — glamorous with a side of DGAF.
Photo: Kevin Mazur/Getty Images.

Chanel Ombre Première Longwear Cream Eyeshadow, $36, available at Chanel.

If you're a Scorpio, try sunshine eyes.

According to Angel, Jupiter, the planet of abundance, is in Scorpio until next November. So, it's safe to say it's time to expect a lot of success coming your way. What better to manifest those riches than with a gilded look that screams luxury?

Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Color Paint in M-40, $25, at Make Up For Ever.

If you're a Sagittarius, try not-so-grown-up glitter.

Saturn just left Sagittarius — and all inhibitions went with it. It brings out every ounce of confidence you have deep inside — so it's time to blow the dust off your old favorite sitting at the bottom of your makeup bag. "Eclipses are in Aquarius and right opposite their sign in 2018, so there is no time to be shy," she explains. Now is the time to face your fears and demand your worth with a bold attitude and even bolder lipstick.

Laura Mercier Velour Extreme Matte Lipstick in Dominate, $28, available at Nordstrom.

If you're a Pisces, try Twiggy lashes.

Angel tells us that the 12th house is all about wishes, hopes, and dreams; Pisces are like the windows to the soul.
