TORONTO -- Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick to help the Washington Capitals defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 at Air Canada Centre on Saturday.

When Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin beat Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Curtis McElhinney at 12:43 of the first period on Saturday, he immediately gestured toward the Air Canada Centre stands in the area where he thought Alex Luey, 13, was sitting.

MONTREAL -- Carey Price was ready for his first game in more than three weeks.

Price made 36 saves to help the Montreal Canadiens end a five-game losing streak with a 3-0 win against the Buffalo Sabres at Bell Centre on Saturday.

PITTSBURGH -- Sidney Crosby and Phil Kessel each scored twice to help the Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday.

Crosby, who has three goals in his past two games, scored on two different 5-on-3s, one in the first period and another in the third. Kessel scored once in the first period and again in the second.

The Vegas Golden Knights became the fastest NHL team to 15 wins in its inaugural season with a 4-2 victory against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Saturday.

Tomas Nosek, William Karlsson and Erik Haula scored in a span of 1:42 during the second period for Vegas (15-6-1), which has a five-game winning streak for the second time this season. Jonathan Marchessault scored an empty-net goal at 19:58 of the third period.

Bobby Orr and Mario Lemieux are two of the best hockey players of all time, but only one of them can own the Greatest NHL Moment.

Orr, the legendary Boston Bruins defenseman, and Lemieux, the dynamic center for the Pittsburgh Penguins, are the last two standing after five weeks of fan voting in the Greatest NHL Moments Presented by Coors Light and Pepsi Zero Sugar.

Hockey started small, with a game that morphed from nearly nonexistent in the 1870s to one that by the 1890s was the favorite across Canada. From there it spread, into the United States and elsewhere, into a passion that would eventually become a league, and then an obsession. It would bind grandparents and parents and children, friends and enemies, cities and nations.

The minutes of the first NHL Board of Governors meeting, which concluded 100 years ago Sunday in Montreal, note that it was called "to ascertain if some steps could not be taken to perpetuate the game of hockey." But the men who announced the formation of the new league couldn't have dreamed what it would become a century later.

Though the NHL we know today began play on Dec. 19, 1917, the two first-night games in the League's history wouldn't have taken place without a series of meetings and backroom maneuvers that saw it emerge from the ashes of the National Hockey Association.

LOS ANGELES -- Dustin Brown tied it late in the third period, and Trevor Lewis scored in the fourth round of the shootout to lift the Los Angeles Kings to a 2-1 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Staples Center on Saturday.

Jonathan Quick made 25 saves for the Kings (13-8-3), who ended a three-game losing streak (0-2-1) with their second win in their past seven home games (2-5-0). Anze Kopitar scored in the third round to extend the shootout.

DETROIT -- Brian Gibbons scored at 2:32 of overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 4-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday.

New Jersey (14-5-4) led 3-1 in the third period, but Detroit tied the game with two goals in 1:26.

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jonathan Toews had a goal and two assists, Corey Crawford made 37 saves in his 400th NHL game, and the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Florida Panthers 4-1 at BB&T Center on Saturday.

NEWARK, N.J. -- Daniel Sedin will have a chance at history when the Vancouver Canucks play the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday (2 p.m. ET; SN, MSG, NHL.TV). 

The forward, who has 998 points (375 goals, 623 assists) in 17 seasons with Vancouver, can join his twin brother, Henrik Sedin, as the only players to score 1,000 points with the Canucks.

Chris Kunitz might be gone, but he hasn't forgotten by fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

OTTAWA -- Jaroslav Halak made 31 saves, and Anders Lee and Jordan Eberle scored to help the New York Islanders to a 2-1 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday.

It was the third win in a row for the Islanders (14-7-2) and their sixth in seven games. They allowed fewer than three goals for the fifth time in 23 games this season.

DENVER -- Calgary Flames rookie goalie David Rittich made 24 saves for his first NHL win, 3-2 against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center on Saturday.

Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland and Mikael Backlund scored for the Flames (13-9-1), who went 3-2-1 on a six-game, 11-day road trip.

SAN JOSE -- Martin Jones made 38 saves, and Logan Couture scored two goals to help the San Jose Sharks to a 4-0 win against the Winnipeg Jets at SAP Center on Saturday.

Tim Heed and Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose (12-8-2), which has won four straight against Winnipeg.

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Blues scored three power-play goals and one shorthanded in a 6-3 win against the Minnesota Wild at Scottrade Center on Saturday.

It's the first time since Oct. 25 that the Blues scored multiple power-play goals. They were 3-for-8 against the Wild after going 5-for-38 the previous 12 games.

BOSTON -- The call would go out as soon as John Grzelcyk knew there was a chance the ice would be available. Bring Matt over, he would say. TD Garden, his office, wasn't far from their Charlestown home, just a mile or two. His son could be ready on a moment's notice.

"If the [Boston] Bruins played at home and they would go away, sometimes they'd leave it up for a few hours," Matt Grzelcyk said on Friday, after the Bruins beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3. "My dad would call my mom to bring me right over. I always had my bags packed."
