Improved support for custom themes with Crowd Links

You can now use custom themes with read-only crowd links. Previously, maps shared using crowd links did not support custom theme look and feel. From today, all crowd link collaborators will see shared maps the same way, including map theme updates and custom theme attributes.

Crowd links enable you invite large groups of observer or collaborators to mind mapping sessions, without people having to set up their own MindMup accounts. The new update makes such collaborations more powerful by enabling you to set up sessions with argument visualisations and fishbone diagrams, which rely on custom theme properties.

Make fishbone diagrams in Microsoft Teams

You can now make fishbone diagrams using MindMup in Microsoft Teams. Last month we introduced Fishbone diagrams into MindMup, today we have added the option to create fishbone diagrams when creating a Microsoft teams tab.

Getting started

Just select one of the
Fishbone
option from the dropdown list menu to create a new diagram, or switch an existing mind map to a fishbone diagram by selecting
View/Map Theme
menu after showing the menu using the “toggle compact layout” icon on the far right of the toolbar.

Integrating fishbone diagrams into Microsoft Teams enhances collaborative problem-solving by visually mapping out cause and effect relationships. These diagrams help users systematically analyze the potential causes of a problem, making it easier to identify and discuss root causes within a team setting. By embedding this tool directly in Teams, users can seamlessly create, share, and edit diagrams in real-time during virtual meetings or through chat channels. This fosters a more engaging and productive environment where team members can collectively brainstorm, pinpoint specific issues, and develop actionable solutions, all within the familiar interface of Microsoft Teams, thus streamlining communication and decision-making processes.

Make fishbone diagrams

You can now make fishbone diagrams using MindMup. Fishbone diagrams, also known as Ishikawa or cause-and-effect diagrams, help identify the root causes of a problem. Shaped like a fish skeleton, the diagram has a “head” representing the problem and “bones” for categories like people, processes, and equipment. Causes are mapped along each bone, branching into sub-causes. This visual tool aids in brainstorming, pinpointing issues, and understanding complex problems in a structured way.

All the usual keyboard and productivity shortcuts that MindMup brings work on these new diagrams as well, allowing you to quickly brainstorm and collaborate on root cause analysis.

Limitations

Some visual aspects of other diagram types, such as line labels, arrows and manual positioning are currently disabled for fishbone diagrams. In general, fishbone diagrams already contain lots of text, and adding more to the labels would make things too busy. We recommend explaining details in the text of the nodes themselves.

Getting started

Just select one of the fishbone templates from the
File/New
menu to create a new diagram, or switch an existing mind map to a fishbone diagram by selecting
View/Map Theme
menu.

Changing the feature voting system

We’re switching from uservoice to an e-mail system for proposals. Previously, we were directing users who had suggestions for features to a feature voting web site, managed by Uservoice. From today, we’re no longer using that service. Instead, if you have a proposal or an idea that you’d like to see added to MindMup, please e-mail us at features@mindmup.com.

This is an experiment to see if we can engage with the community more effectively, and we plan to revisit the process in the next few months depending on the outcome.

Hide account email easily

You can now remove your account email from the view, to protect your privacy for screenshots and streaming sessions.. Previously, when you log in, MindMup showed your account email in the top-right corner so you can identify the account easily, and access your account preferences. This was not ideal
for users who wanted to share images of their screen, for example for online lectures, shared streaming sessions, or for publishing screenshots in academic papers.

From today, you can hide the account email easily from the application “View” menu. Just click the “View” -> “Toggle Account Email Display” option in the application menu, and the email will be hidden from the map editor and map listing screens, and replaced with the generic “account info” label. This allows you to share images of the screen when working on mind maps easily online, without worrying about disclosing your email or having to post-process the images to remove personal details.

Note that the account email still shows on the account management screens, it is just hidden from the top-right menu in the map editor.

Disable account-wide sharing

You can now disable the option to share maps with everyone in a team or domain account. Previously, all users of a domain or team account could share their maps with everyone in the account using the automatic “share with all” group. This can now be disabled.

To disable, open the account management page and select the “account privacy” section, then, select the “Disable share with all” button

Once disabled, select “Enable share with all” to reenable this function

Configure text margins for groups of nodes

You can now set up margins for node groups easily. Previously, you could edit text margins on individual nodes, and with this new feature you can do it easily for the whole map, or for individual levels. This allows you to customize styling and make certain levels visually different from others.

To modify the margins for a group of nodes, first open the theme style editor. Click the “view” application menu, then select the “customise theme” option.

Next, open the “Text” section in the sidebar. If some other section is open, you can click the section title to collapse it first, so you can find the “Text” section easily.

Find the level you want to modify (or change the “defaults” group to adjust the entire map). Click the “more space” or “less space” buttons to control the spacing around the text.

You can restore standard spacing by clicking the “reset” button.

Easily expand all hidden nodes

You can now show all hidden nodes faster on large maps, using the new menu item
View > Expand all nodes
. This function is the reverse of the older item
Collapse all nodes
, and it will automatically open all collapsed nodes in the map. With the new function, it’s easier to work with large maps, especially if you show and hide different parts during a discussion.

Adjust node text margins

You can now increase or decrease space around text in the nodes, to create larger margins and call out important concepts visually, or to decrease margins and save space.

Here is how to adjust the margins around text on a node:

First, select the node (or nodes you want to adjust), then click the Node Style tool in the toolbar:

Then, in the styling section drop-down, select the section for margins.

Use the buttons in the dialogue to increase or decrease space around the text.

Once you update the style, the selected nodes will appear with custom margins:
